Das erfindungsgemässe Beschichtungsmittel ist dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass es aus einer wässrigen Lösung mit einem pH-Wert zwischen 4 und 7 besteht, welche A) 1 Gewichtsteil eines alkoxylierten tertiären Amins der Formel I R-N= [ (CHR'CHR1-O)nHj2 in welcher R einen aliphatischen Kohlenwasserstoffrest mit 8-22 Kohlenstoffatomen, R' Wasserstoff oder die Methyl gruppe und n eine Zahl von 1-50 bedeuten, B) 1 bis 5 Ge wichtsteile Glycerin, Äthylenglykol, Harnstoff, Sorbit, Äthoxysorbit-Laurinsäureester als Befeuchtungsmittel oder eines feuchtigkeitsanziehenden Alkali- oder Erdalkalimetall salzes einer Alkylcarbonsäure mit 1 bis 5 Kohlenstoffatomen oder eines feuchtigkeitanziehenden anorganischen Salzes enthält;
Schema A Tabelle I feuchtigkeitsanzichendes Salz Beschich Beispiel basische Organische Teile Teile Teile Eick- Teile Teile pH-Ein- pH Teppich- tungs- Aufladung Nr.

The invention relates to a coating agent for the antistatic treatment of textile goods. In particular, the invention relates to a coating agent (A = antistatic) which is particularly useful for the antistatic treatment of staple fibers, in particular with regard to carpet and upholstery fibers which are normally provided with polymeric coatings. The invention also relates to a method for producing such antistatic agents and the use thereof for treating textiles with an antistatic agent for the purpose of reducing or avoiding electrostatic charges.
The phenomenon of the formation of electrostatic charges in textiles poses an acute problem in manufacturing and treatment processes for textiles, especially in the processing of upholstery and carpet fibers or
-Threads. These static electrical charges are transferred to the people using the textiles, who suffer an unpleasant shock when the charge is discharged from the people to the earth.
The known means for preventing electrostatic charging have numerous shortcomings and are generally not suitable for carpets. One of the main deficiencies associated with known antistatic agents is that they adversely affect the ability of textile surfaces to be dyed and otherwise treated. Furthermore, the known antistatic agents often impair the grip properties of the textiles. In order to be effective at all, these agents had to be applied to the fiber or carpet surface.
While this is permissible in some applications, it often makes the surfaces unsightly, with the coated areas tending to attract dirt; moreover, the applied antistatic agents have a very high tendency to be removed during normal use of the textiles and when cleaning the carpets or upholstery. For these reasons, the use of the known antistatic coatings, especially for carpets and upholstery, is severely hindered and restricted.
It is known that an electrostatic charge arises when two or more dielectric materials are rubbed against one another. Due to the dielectric nature of these materials, the static charges do not spread. This electrostatic charge occurs particularly when the air humidity is low. Conditions that lead to electrostatic charging exist, for example, when items of clothing worn by people are rubbed against upholstery fibers or when shoes rub or brush against carpets; Conditions that favor the formation of electrostatic charges are given, in particular, in the low air humidity that is often present in heated rooms in winter.
If, as has already been stated, a person carries an electrostatic charge, this can be exposed to the inconvenience of a slight shock or a spark if he is grounded by touching a metallic object. When the generated charges pass through the dielectric material, i. the upholstery or carpet can be evenly distributed, there is no electrostatic charge for those in contact with it. The antistatic agents of the present invention now cause the electrostatic charges to be distributed evenly over the textile material and similar materials. According to this description, the term antistatic is used to describe the properties of preventing the formation, induction or accumulation of electrostatic charges.
A primary object of the present invention is to provide the manufacture of a superior antistatic agent.
From US Pat. No. 2,809,159 antistatic agents for textiles are already known which contain a water-dispersible ethoxylated tertiary hydroxyamine, which has an unsubstituted C8-C24 alkyl group connected directly to the amine nitrogen, and a water-soluble, practically non-volatile polyhydric alcohol in an esterified state. From the journal Reyon, Zellwolle und other chemical fibers, 30. 573 (1952) it is also known to increase the electrical conductivity of antistatic preparations by adding hygroscopic substances, such as. B.
Calcium chloride, to improve.
Compared to these known agents, the coating agent according to the invention for the antistatic treatment of textile goods surprisingly has the advantage that, in addition to a superior antistatic treatment, it does not attract dirt and is not removed during normal use. Furthermore, it does not impair the grip properties of treated textiles and is moreover well compatible with latex binders, which are often used as carpet underlays and as adhesives.
The coating agent according to the invention is characterized in that it consists of an aqueous solution with a pH value between 4 and 7 which A) 1 part by weight of an alkoxylated tertiary amine of the formula I RN = [(CHR'CHR1-O) nHj2 in which R an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical with 8-22 carbon atoms, R 'is hydrogen or the methyl group and n is a number from 1-50, B) 1 to 5 parts by weight of glycerol, ethylene glycol, urea, sorbitol, ethoxysorbitol lauric acid ester as a humectant or a moisture-attracting alkali - Or alkaline earth metal salt of an alkyl carboxylic acid having 1 to 5 carbon atoms or a moisture-attracting inorganic salt;
and C) if component B is not an electrolyte
Contains 0.1 part by weight of a non-moisturizing salt of a strong base with a strong acid with a high dissociation constant.
As component (B) of the agent according to the invention, moisture-attracting alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salts of alkyl carboxylic acids with 1-5 carbon atoms, such as e.g.
Sodium formate, potassium formate, lithium formate, cesium formate, sodium acetate, potassium acetate, potassium butyrate or moisture-attracting inorganic salts, e.g. Calcium chloride can be used.
When using a humectant such as glycerin as component (B), it is necessary to add component (C).
Even if a moisture-attracting salt with a relatively low dissociation constant such as sodium formate or potassium formate is used as component (B), it is recommended to use a small amount of a salt of a strong base and a strong acid which has a high dissociation constant, for example - add sodium chloride, potassium chloride or calcium chloride. Salts that are not sufficiently moisture-attracting per se, such as sodium chloride, sodium sulfate or potassium nitrate and which also do not work fully satisfactorily as an electrolyte, can be used in combination with a non-ionic humectant such as glycerine or urea or in combination with more moisture-attracting salts such as potassium formate or calcium chloride, can be used.
In the case of the humidifying agent according to the invention, the humidifying agent or
The moisture-attracting salt and the electrolyte can be a single compound or a mixture of compounds.
According to the invention, an alkoxylated tertiary amine of the following formula is used as component (A) of the coating agent:
EMI2.1
in which R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical having 8 to 22 carbon atoms, R 'is hydrogen or the methyl radical and n is an integer from 1-50, preferably between 1 and about 30; higher alkoxylated derivatives can also be used, e.g. Products obtained by condensing 1 mole of a saturated or unsaturated primary aliphatic amine with up to 50 moles of alkylene oxide, preferably ethylene oxide.
Such alkoxylated amines are well known in the art; they are prepared by condensing saturated or unsaturated primary aliphatic amine with 8 to 22 carbon atoms with alkylene oxide, preferably ethylene oxide, although propylene oxide and butylene oxide can also be used, with polyglycol groups of the desired Chain length can be obtained.
The production of a coating composition according to the invention is characterized in that an equimolar amount of an alkali metal base is added to an aliphatic carboxylic acid with 1 to 5 carbon atoms in an aqueous medium and one part of amine of the formula I is added to 1 to 5 parts of the dissolved carboxylic acid salt to the solution thus obtained and is mixed to a homogeneous mixture and that enough alkyl carboxylic acid with 1 to 5 carbon atoms is added to this mixture that the pH of the mixture is between 4 and 7.
Substances which are compatible with it and which do not adversely affect its fundamental new antistatic properties can also be added to the coating agent. These substances include wetting agents of the nonionic or cationic type. Such wetting agents can be used in amounts of about 0.01 to 0.1 parts by weight and are preferably included in the antistatic composition when treating heavy staple fiber, especially that of carpets, since these wetting agents prevent the antistatic composition from penetrating into the Facilitate textile substrate.
It is desirable to add a measured amount of wetting agent, which has been previously determined by tests to determine the degree of penetration of the coating agent into the textile substrate, this is especially true for the treatment of carpets so that the coating agent penetrates the back of the carpet and wets the base of the staple fibers, but does not reach or reach the outer tips or ends of the staple
penetrates.
Other materials which can be incorporated into the coating agent according to the invention are coloring agents including dyes and pigments, also fillers and similar additives, antioxidants, additional antistatic agents, stabilizers and antifoaming agents. Various volatile, water-soluble solvents can also be added, such as, for example, lower alcohols having 1 to 4 carbon atoms or acetone, in order to make it easier to remove excess water by evaporation.
The coating agent according to the invention can be prepared in such a way that the various components, namely the alkoxylated amine, the combination of moisture-absorbing salt / electrolyte or a humectant and an electrolyte are dissolved in water, the order of addition being unimportant and then the ingredients at a temperature of Room temperature to about 100C C are mixed until a uniform mixture is formed.
If a salt of a lower carboxylic acid is used as a moisture-attracting salt and optionally also as an electrolyte, this can be prepared in situ by adding a carboxylic acid having 1 to 5 carbon atoms and an alkali metal base or alkaline earth metal base, i.e. H. a hydroxide or carbonate such as a hydroxide or carbonate of sodium, potassium, lithium or cesium is added.
When all of the above components have been added to the water and a uniform mixture has been achieved, the pH of the resulting mixture or solution is adjusted by adding alkyl carboxylic acid with 1 to 5 carbon atoms so that it is in the range from pH 4 to neutral (pH 7 ), with a weakly acidic character being preferred, d. H. the pH value is preferably approximately between 5.6 and 6.5 and in particular 6. If a salt of a lower carboxylic acid is added as a moisture-attracting salt and / or electrolyte, it is advantageous if the pH adjustment is carried out using the same carboxylic acid which corresponds to the anion of the salt present. It is clear that this pH adjustment leads to the formation of a salt of the alkoxylated amine by adding a carboxylic acid.
To further describe the subject matter of the invention, a preferred use of the coating agent according to the invention for the antistatic treatment of textile goods is shown schematically in FIG.
Here, 2 denotes a roll of textile material, such as a carpet or upholstery material, which preferably consists of staple fiber and which is to be treated with the coating agent according to the invention. The fabric web 4 is unrolled with the aid of drive rollers 14 and runs over an apparatus 6 which applies the coating agent and which in the present case consists of a spray device (spray head) which sprays the coating agent onto the underside of the textile web. The textile web then runs through a drying oven 8, in which most of the water is evaporated by radiant heat and / or a hot atmosphere.
It is clear that the surface on the textile product does not exceed 1000 C as a result of the evaporation of the water. The ambient atmosphere, on the other hand, can have temperatures of 150 to 2050 C, with an upper limit on the temperature value only in that the temperatures must not be so high that the textile substrate or the coating agent decomposes or destroys. When practically all of the water has been removed by evaporation, the textile web runs through a suitable device which applies latex to the back of the fiber and which is shown in FIG. 1 as feed roller 10. 16 with a support roller and 12 with a winding device is designated.
In the case of the use of loosely woven or tufted carpet structures, the latex covering is applied in the usual way in such a way that a uniform covering and good adhesion of the latex to the underlying curly ends of the staple fibers is achieved.
Care must be taken that when applying the latex backing layer, there is no complete penetration that would entrap the coating agent. Namely, if the antistatic layer is entrapped or encapsulated, its effectiveness is naturally lowered.
Any conventional latex base coat can be used. Natural rubber latices are preferred, such as Lotol GX 3180 from Naugahyde Chemical Division of U.S. Rubber Company, Burkote R1732 from Burkart-Schier from General Aniline and Film Corporation, also carboxylated styrene butadiene rubber, such as Lotol GX-1314 from Naugahyde Chemical Division of U.S.
Rubber Company or Burkote A 2223 from Burkart Schier of General Aniline and Film Corporation. Neoprene latices such as Lotol GX-1076 from Naugahyde Chemical Division of U.S.A. Rubber Company or Burkote R 2285 from Burkart-Schier, as well as latices made of polystyrene, vinylidene chloride, polyacrylates, butadiene styrene, etc. deploy.
The coating agent can be used in any coating ratio which can produce the desired antistatic properties. For use on carpets, the dry coating weight should be on the order of 0.28 to 339 g / 0.83 m2 and preferably within the range 14.1 to 84.9 g / 0.83 m2. A particularly preferred dry cover weight for carpets is 48.1 g / 0.83 m2.
When applied to conventional textile materials, such as woven threads, the dry coating weight is approximately in the range of 0.10% to approximately 4.0% based on the weight of the fiber. A preferred order of magnitude for the dry weight of the coating for textiles is in the range from about 0.8 to about 3.0%, based on the fiber weight. A particularly favorable dry coating weight for textiles is 2%, based on the fiber weight.
The essence of the present invention will now be further explained with reference to the following examples, which represent preferred embodiments, all parts are parts by weight.
Examples 1 to 14
According to these examples, the coating agent is prepared by adding the base and the organic acid to water in order to generate the moisturizer in situ. The alkoxylated amine used consists of stearylamine which was ethoxylated with 20 moles of ethylene oxide per mole of amine. The wetting agent used was tridecyl alcohol which had been ethoxylated with 6 moles of ethylene oxide per mole of alcohol. The amounts used in the individual examples are given in Table I below.
In all cases, the anti-static finish was applied to the back of the tufted carpet, which has a primarily loosely woven jute underlay; the following table lists the type of fiber used in the tuft-like fiber pile, as well as the coating ratio of the coating agent which was applied to the back of the carpet. After the coating, the carpet covered in this way was dried to remove excess moisture. A latex coating was then applied over the antistatic coating layer so that the antistatic layer was not encapsulated.
The test procedure carried out on these examples consisted of what is known as the Walking Foot Scuff Test. This test procedure is carried out as follows: A carpet test piece 2.70 m long and 0.6-0.9 m wide is spread on the floor. An electrostatic voltmeter is attached to a table at one end of the rug.
The test person then begins at the end of the carpet on which the voltmeter is located to walk across the carpet to the other end, wearing shoes with leather soles and leather heels and making constant pushing movements with their feet; then the test person, who is now on the other end of the carpet, turns around and goes back to the voltmeter end of the carpet, whereupon they immediately make hand contact with the test probe. The electrostatic charge that has accumulated in the test person is transferred to the voltmeter and registered by it.
In all examples the test was carried out at a temperature of 25 + 1 C; the relative humidity was always 35 to 40%. Scheme A Table I Moisturizing Salt Coating Example Basic Organic Parts Parts Parts Eick Parts Parts pH One-pH Carpet Charging No.

In these examples, the treated samples consisted of nylon and
Tufted wool carpet structures. In all cases the antistatic coating was applied to the base of the carpet fibers and primary jute and then dried. A latex coating was then applied to the antistatic coating in such a way that the antistatic was not encapsulated. In these examples, the moisture-attracting salt was formed in situ by the reaction of a basic reacting component with an acidic reacting component. The amine and the wetting agent were the same as described in Examples 1-12.
The test method used in these examples consisted of the so-called Stationary Foot Scuff Test. This procedure is carried out as follows: The carpet to be tested is placed on the floor, whereby it should have a minimum size of 45 cm x 45 cm; the test person, who wears shoes with leather soles and leather heels, stands motionless on the carpet with one foot and rubs briskly on the carpet fiber with the other foot, holding the probe of a volmeter in one hand; the test person either performs a maximum of 15 sliding movements with one foot or slides until the voltmeter has come to a standstill. The generated static electricity is transmitted by the test person and registered by the voltmeter.
This test was carried out at a temperature of 25 + 10 C and a constant relative humidity of 35 to 40%.

Examples 47 to 75
In these examples, the treated coupons consisted of woven and nonwoven fibers. In all cases, an antistatic coating layer was applied to the textile products, followed by drying to remove the excess moisture. The amine used was the same as in Examples 1 to 15. No wetting agent was used in these examples, so that the antistatic coating agent could not completely penetrate the textiles.
The moisturizing salt was formed in situ by a reaction of the basic component with the acidic component of Examples 1-15.
The procedure followed in these Examples 47 to 75 was as follows: The specimens were cut to size and given the antistatic coating. The coating weight was based on the weight of the fibers to be tested. A polymeric backing was applied to the fibers and dried for about 10 to 30 minutes at about 93 to about 1630 C.
The dried fiber was then conditioned for at least 6 hours at a temperature of 21 + 20 C and a 35 to 40% relative humidity. The coated material was then tested on a so-called Atlab tester available from Atlas Chemical Co., Wilmington, Del. had been developed. The test procedure consists of a controlled rubbing of a textile strip against a pair of static electricity generating polytetrafluoroethylene blocks and over a stainless steel block which transmits the generated static electricity to an electrostatic voltmeter. This test was carried out at a temperature of 25 T 10 C and a constant relative humidity of 35 to 40%.
