Leime, Bindemittel, Anstrichmittel, Farb- bzw.
B. in Fussmatten, Bade zimmervorhängen, Sitzgelegenheiten, Trittrosten in Schwimmbädern, Wandbespannungen usw.
EMI3.2

Use of 4-hydroxybenzophenones to combat harmful microorganisms outside the textile industry
The invention relates to the use of 4-hydroxybenzophenones of the formula
EMI1.1
wherein X1, X2, Y1 and Y2 each have a hydrogen or halogen atom, a trifluoromethyl, alkyl or alkoxy group, X3 and Y3 each a hydrogen or halogen atom, a cyclohexyl or optionally further substituted benzene radical, X4, X5 and Y4 each a hydrogen or Halogen atom, where at least one of the X or Y radicals is a halogen atom, and where the number of alkyl, alkoxy, trifluoromethyl, benzene and cyclohexyl radicals as substituents together is at most 4, for combating harmful microorganisms outside the textile industry.
4-Hydroxybenzophenones of the formula are preferred here
EMI1.2
used, in which X4, Xg, X6, Y4, Y5 and Y6 each represent a hydrogen or halogen atom, at least one of the radicals representing a halogen atom, and X7, X8 and Y7 each represent a hydrogen atom, a trifluoromethyl, alkyl or alkoxy group.
Possible halogen atoms for the substituents in formulas (1) and (2) are iodine and especially chlorine and bromine. Both straight-chain and branched radicals are suitable as alkyl groups for the substituents in formulas (1) and (2), e.g. B. ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl or tert-butyl radicals, but preferably methyl groups. The groups corresponding to the alkyl groups come into consideration as alkoxy groups.
The use of 4-hydroxybenzophenones of the formula is of particular interest
EMI1.3
wherein X4, X5, X6, Y4, Ys and Y6 each represent a hydrogen or halogen atom, at least one of these radicals being a halogen atom, and X9, X1O and Y8 each have a hydrogen atom, a trifluoromethyl group, an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms or an alkoxy group 1 to 4 carbon atoms, at least 3 of all X and Y radicals being a hydrogen atom.
4-hydroxybenzophenones of the formula
EMI1.4
wherein Xq, X5, Y4 and Y5 each represent a hydrogen or halogen atom, with at least one of these radicals being a halogen atom, X11, X12, Ys and Ylo each being a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, with at least 4 of all X and Y - Rests represent a hydrogen atom are particularly suitable for the purposes of the invention.
In the context of formula (4), the use of compounds which contain at most 2 alkyl groups is of particular practical interest. These 4-hydroxybenzophenones include those of the formula
EMI2.1
in which at least one of the radicals X13, Xi4, Yii and Y12 represents a chlorine or bromine atom and the remaining radicals each represent a methyl group, a hydrogen, chlorine or bromine atom, preferably.
Good results can especially be achieved with 4-hydroxybenzophenones of the formula
EMI2.2
be achieved, in which X15, X16, X18, Xlg and Yt5 each represent a hydrogen or chlorine atom, X17 a hydrogen, chlorine or bromine atom and Y1s, Y14 and Y16 each represent a methyl group, a hydrogen or bromine atom, at least one of the X or Y radicals represent a chlorine atom and 5 to 6 of all X and Y radicals represent hydrogen atoms.
The 4-hydroxybenzophenones of the formulas (1) to (6) are known or can be obtained by methods known per se, e.g. B. from the corresponding phenyl benzoates by the so-called Fries reaction. (Compare: Baltzly et al., Journal of the American Chemical Society 77, 2522 or L. F. and M. Fieser, Textbook of Organic Chemistry 1954, page 728). The reaction can be carried out in the melt or in the presence of an organic solvent, e.g. B. nitrobenzene can be carried out. When the corresponding phenyl benzoate is heated together with aluminum chloride, the 4-hydroxybenzophenones of the formula (1) are then formed.
4-Hydroxybenzophenones of formula (1) are z. B. by rearrangement of an ester of the formula
EMI2.3
in which X1 to X5 and Y1 to Y4 have the meaning given, in the presence of aluminum chloride. Of course, the 4-position in the phenol radical of the compound of the formula (7) must not be substituted, since otherwise the rearrangement cannot take place.
The starting materials of the formula (7) can be prepared by known methods, for. B. by reacting a corresponding benzoyl halide with a corresponding phenol obtained.
What is particularly surprising when using compounds of the formula (1) is their broad range of antibacterial activity, which in the case of some of these compounds extends to both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. From an application point of view, the odorlessness and colorlessness of the formula (1) are of particular value.
The use of the antimicrobial compounds of the formula (1) is possible on a very broad basis, in particular for protecting organic substrates against attack by destructive and pathogenic (including phytopathogenic) microorganisms. The aforementioned antimicrobials are therefore suitable both as preservatives and as disinfectants for technical products of all kinds, in crop protection, in agriculture and in cosmetics.
The 4-hydroxybenzophenones of the formula (1) can be used specifically for finishing or protecting organic material outside of the textile industry by incorporating at least one of these compounds into the organic materials to be finished or to apply it to their surface.
Among the non-textile technical products which can be preserved with the aid of the compounds of the formula (1), the following may be mentioned as examples:
Glues, binders, paints, paints or
Printing pastes and similar preparations based on organic and inorganic dyes or pigments, including those which contain casein or other organic compounds as admixtures. Wall and ceiling coatings, e.g. B. those that contain a protein-containing dye binder are protected from attack by pests by adding the compounds of formula (1). It can also be used to protect wood. The compounds of formula (1) can also be used as preservatives in the pulp and paper industry, u. a. to prevent the known slime formation caused by microorganisms in the apparatus used for paper production.
Furthermore, by combining the compounds of the formula (1) with surface-active, in particular detergent substances, detergents and cleaning agents with excellent antibacterial or antibacterial properties are obtained.
antifungal effect. The compounds of formula (1) can, for. B. can be incorporated into soaps or combined with soap-free, detergent or other surface-active substances, in particular non-ionic or cationic detergents, or they can be combined with mixtures of soaps and soap-free substances, with their antimicrobial in these combinations Effectiveness is retained in full.
Detergents which contain the compounds of the above formula can be used in industry and household as well as in the food industry, e.g. B. dairies, breweries, slaughterhouses.
The present compounds can also be used as constituents of preparations which are used for cleaning or disinfection.
The effect of the compounds of the formula (1) can also be used for preserving and disinfecting finishes for plastics. When using plasticizers, it is advantageous to add the antimicrobial additive to the plastic dissolved or dispersed in the plasticizer. It is advisable to ensure that it is distributed as evenly as possible in the plastic. Such plastics with antimicrobial properties can be used for everyday objects of all kinds, which are effective against various residues of germs, such as. B. bacteria and fungi, is desired to find use such. B. in floor mats, bathroom curtains, seating, step gratings in swimming pools, wall coverings, etc.
By incorporating them into appropriate wax and polishing compounds, you get floor and furniture care products with a disinfecting effect.
The use forms of the active compounds of the formula (1) can correspond to the customary formulations of pesticides. Agents which contain the said active ingredients can optionally also contain additives such as solvents, dispersants, wetting agents or adhesives, etc., as well as other pest control agents. In particular, however, the agents can also contain a solid or liquid diluent or a solid or liquid carrier in addition to the active ingredient of the formula (1).
The active substance content of these agents can be between 0.1 and 50 g, preferably between 1 and 30 g, of active substance per 1000 g of agent.

To test the action against bacteria, discs with a diameter of 20 mm of the equipped filter paper are not watered and, after watering once, are placed on nutrient agar plates for 24 hours which have been inoculated with Staphyiococcus aureus. The plates are then incubated at 370 ° C. for 24 hours.
On the one hand, the inhibition zone (HZ in mm) and, on the other hand, the microscopically detectable growth (W in%) under the washers are assessed.
