Abstract
1,257,215. Electrohydrodimerization process. MONSANTO CO. 5 Feb., 1969 [9 Feb., 1968], No. 6223/69. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C7] Hydrodimers of olefinic compounds are produced by passing electric current through an aqueous olefinic nitrile-, ester- and/or carboxamide-containing catholyte separated from an aqueous acidic, e.g. H 2 SO 4 anolyte by a solid cation-permeable membrane of a conductive polymeric matrix reinforced by at least two parallel sheets of woven glass fabric embedded therein. Preferably, the matrix comprises a copolymer of a polyvinyl aromatic (e.g. divinyl benzene, naphthalene, diphenyl or alkyl-substituted derivative thereof) compound and a monovinyl aromatic (e.g. vinyl naphthalene or alkyl-substituted derivative thereof) compound having sulphonic groups bonded to the aromatic nuclei of the copolymer. The catholyte may contain a quaternary ammonium or amine alkylsulphate or sulphonate. The electrodes may be of Pb or alloy thereof. For example, acrylonitrile may be continuously hydrodimerized to adiponitrile in a series of cells using tetraethylammonium ethylsulphate as the electrolytic salt in the catholyte and sulphonated divinylbenzene-styrene copolymer as polymeric matrix for the cation-permeable membrane.
