Process for treating the surfaces of aluminum or aluminum alloys
The invention relates to a method for treating the surfaces of aluminum or aluminum alloys, in particular to increase corrosion protection and wear resistance, as well as to achieve particularly decorative effects, by anodic production of oxide layers with subsequent compression by water or steam.
For the purpose of corrosion protection, anodic oxide layers are often applied to aluminum surfaces. These oxide layers protect the aluminum surfaces from the effects of the weather and other corrosive media. Furthermore, the anodic oxide layers are also applied in order to obtain a harder surface and thus to achieve increased wear resistance of the aluminum. Particularly decorative effects can be achieved through the color of the oxide layers or their ability to be colored easily.
A number of methods are known for applying anodic oxide layers to aluminum.
with direct current in solutions of sulfuric acid (for example, the oxide layers are generated using the current-sulfuric acid process). However, solutions of organic acids, such as, in particular, sulfophthalic acid or sulfanilic acid, or these in admixture with sulfuric acid, are also frequently used. The last-mentioned processes are known in particular as hard anodization processes.
However, these anodically applied oxide layers do not meet all the requirements with regard to corrosion protection, since they have a porous structure. For this reason it is necessary to re-densify the oxide layers. This additional compression is carried out with hot or boiling water or steam and is often referred to as sealing. This closes the pores and increases the protection against corrosion considerably. In order not to trap any foreign salts when the pores are closed, fully demineralized water is generally used for the recompression.
When anodically applied oxide layers are re-densified, not only are the pores closed, but a more or less thick, velvety layer, the so-called sealing layer, is also formed over the entire surface. This consists of amorphous aluminum hydroxide and is not touch-proof, so that the decorative effect of the layer is impaired.
It cannot be removed by treatment with chemicals without the oxide layer being attacked and thus losing its corrosion resistance again. For this reason it was previously necessary to remove this coating mechanically by hand.
The invention was based on the object of developing a method which, without reducing the corrosion protection and wear resistance, removes the sealing covering without manual work and improves the decorative appearance of the layer.
According to the invention, this object is achieved in that the surfaces are subsequently compressed by wet blasting using glass beads with a diameter of 30 to 200 cm (preferably from 50 to 100 cm) as blasting media at a spray pressure of approx. 0.5 to 5 atmospheres Temperatures between 10 and 800C can be post-treated. The application of the anodic oxidation layers to the aluminum or aluminum alloy surfaces and the subsequent compaction of the layers are carried out according to the known methods mentioned at the beginning.
The spray pressure is preferably kept between 0.5 and 5 atmospheres and depends on the thickness of the sealing layer, the size of the glass beads and the distance between the spray nozzle and the surface to be treated, and the angle of incidence of the jet. In general, the distance between the spray nozzle and the surface is 10 to 20 cm, but in special cases it can be varied within wide limits.
The treatment can be carried out either at room temperature or at an elevated temperature of up to approx. 800C. The most favorable temperature to be selected depends on the jet liquid used or
their additives and then whether an additional cleaning should be achieved.
It is particularly useful to add a non-foaming wetting agent or mixture of wetting agents to the jet liquid. Nonionic wetting agents such as those obtained by reacting ethylene oxide or propylene oxide with fatty acids, amines, phenols and monohydric or polyhydric alcohols are suitable for this purpose. In particular, reaction products of polypropylene oxide with ethylene oxide or addition products of propylene oxide and ethylene oxide with ethylene diamine are also suitable.
Mixtures of nonionic wetting agents which are selected so that they do not foam at the application temperature are preferred. The amount of wetting agents is 0.3-3, preferably 0.5-1.5% by weight: based on the jet liquid.
Surprisingly, the new method makes it possible to completely remove the sealing coating without the anodic oxide layer being damaged or impaired in any way. It was found that the process smoothed the surface and increased the gloss.
If thicker glass beads are used, however, damage to the oxide layer under the sealing layer occurs. This reduces the decorative effect of the layer and impairs the protection against corrosion. When using smaller glass beads, plastic granules or similar blasting material, no or no safe removal of the sealing coating is possible.
In the following examples, unless otherwise noted, the alloy designations in accordance with DIN 1725 and the quantities in weight c.
The angle of incidence of the jet liquid was about 700 ° C. and the distance between the spray nozzles and the surface was about 20 cm.
example 1
Using the direct current sulfuric acid process, oxide layers were anodically generated on sheets of aluminum alloy AlMg3 at 18CC and a current density of 1.5 to 2.0 Aidm2 in 30 minutes and compacted with steam (60 minutes).
These post-compacted oxide layers with a dense, firmly adhering coating of aluminum hydroxide were coated with a mixture of 79% water, 20% glass spheres (t 30 to 100p) and 1.04, a non-foaming, nonionic wetting agent mixture (60% addition product of 13 mol ethylene oxide Coconut fatty acid amine and 4007O reaction product of ethylene oxide with polypropylene oxide,
Molecular weight approx. 2000, trademark Pluronic L 61) at 600C by spraying under a jet pressure of 0.5 to
Treated 1.0 atü for 5 minutes (wet blasting). The amorphous sealing coverings that had grown on were completely removed and unevenness in the surface smoothed out.
The surface roughness decreased from 3.9 to 2.4yw and the gloss of the surface increased by 10% compared to the untreated material.
Instead of a glass bead with a diameter of 30 to 100 p could also be one with the same success
Glass grain with a diameter of 100 to 200 a can be used. If, on the other hand, glass beads with a grain size between 500 and 100011 were used, visible damage to the surface due to pitting occurred. With a plastic granulate (commercially available polystyrene, particle size 100 to 200 a) as blasting agent, the sealing coating could not be detached from the anodic oxide layers even after one hour of exposure.
If a jet liquid was used without the addition of a wetting agent, the time until the sealing coverings were completely removed was extended to 10 minutes. A decrease in the surface roughness and an increase in gloss were also found.
Example 7
Sheets made of the aluminum alloy AlMgSi 1 and extruded profiles made of AlMgSiO.5 were treated in the same way as described in Example 1.
The sealing coverings could also be completely removed from them and the surfaces improved in the same way as described in Example 1 for the aluminum alloy AlMg3.
Example 3
In the direct current sulfuric acid process, black oxide layers were produced on sheets made of the aluminum alloy AlSiS under the conditions listed in Example 1 and compacted with fully demineralized water at 980C. Of these oxide layers, the gray-appearing amorphous sealing coverings were made with a mixture of 89% water, 10% glass grain (t 100 to 200 p) and 1% of a non-foaming wetting agent mixture (from 50% adduct 13 mol ethylene oxide with coconut fatty acid amine and 50'7c adduct propylene oxide Polyglycerin) at 550C and a pressure of 1 to 2 atmospheres in the spray process after a treatment time of 4 minutes.
The surface roughness decreased from 3.7 to 2.5, u and the surface gloss increased by 7gc. Without the addition of a wetting agent, the duration of the treatment is considerably extended until a comparable effect is achieved.
With larger glass grains (ö 300 to 1400 1) the deposit was removed completely; However, visible damage to the surface occurs through the blasting material. When the glass beads were replaced by plastic granules, no removal of the sealing coating was achieved even after a lengthy treatment with the jet solution.
Example 4
In a bath containing H2SO and sulfophthalic acid, anodic black-colored hard oxide layers were produced on AlMgSi profiles at 270 ° C. and 3 A / dm2 in 30 minutes and subsequently compacted with fully demineralized water at 980 ° C. for 60 minutes. The oxide layers with a velvety sealing coating were then spray-cleaned with a mixture of 84% water, 15% glass beads (f) 100 to 200 p) and 1% of a non-foaming wetting agent (adduct of 9 mol of ethylene oxide or propylene oxide with nonylphenol) at 550C and subjected to a pressure of 2 atmospheres for 4 minutes. The adhesive sealing coating was completely removed and the surface gloss increased by 15%.
The surface roughness decreased from an average of 3.5 to 2.0 liters during this treatment.
If, instead of the aforementioned wetting agent, a non-foaming combination of wetting agents of the commercial brands Pluronic L 61 and L 62 (reaction product of polypropylene oxide with ethylene oxide, molecular weight 2000 or 2500) and Tetronic 701 (reaction product of propylene oxide and ethylene oxide with ethylene diamine) was used, it was also possible at room temperature to be worked. The treatment duration of 4 minutes was only slightly extended. If, on the other hand, blasting was carried out without the addition of a wetting agent, the treatment time had to be extended to 12 minutes in order to achieve a comparable effect.
When using a glass grain size of 400 to 1000 u as the blasting agent, visible damage occurred on the surface, while the sealing coating could not be removed with a plastic granulate.
