Process for the preparation of nitrohydroxyaryl compounds
It is known that nitroaryl compounds can be converted into N / itro-hydroxyaryl compounds by reaction with alkali metal hydroxide, solid alkali metal hydroxide being brought into contact with a nitroaryl compound which is somehow in liquid, i.e. H. ge molten or dissolved in an organic solvent, or where the regaction mixture is heated to temperatures at which it still remains in a solid state, but to at least 700 ° C., with the addition of molecular oxygen.
It has now been found that numerous nitrohydroxyaryl compounds can advantageously be prepared by reacting corresponding nitroaryl compounds with alkali hydroxide, replacing hydrogen with hydroxyl, if a mixture of the two substances in the solid state of aggregation is supplied with molecular oxygen at temperatures below 700.degree.
The process is preferably carried out in such a way that mononitro compounds of the benzene series are continuously mechanically mixed with potassium hydroxide in a powdery state and with the addition of molecular oxygen at temperatures of 20 to 600 ° C. for the required reaction time.
Nitroaryl compounds of the formula are preferably used as starting materials

used, wherein R is a halogen atom such as chlorine, bromine or iodine, an alkyl group, e.g. B. tert-butyl, an alkoxy group such as methoxy, a phenoxy group optionally substituted by a chlorine atom, a chlorophenyl group or a cyclohexyl radical. The substituent R is expediently in the p-position relative to the nitro group. Another suitable starting material is 1,3-dichloro-5-nitrobenzene.
Since the reaction mixture should remain free of liquid components during the entire implementation, the two solid starting materials are advantageously mixed with one another in powder form, and the work is carried out in such a way that the mixture in a granular to powdery state is heated with mechanical mixing and at the required temperature for so long is moved until the implementation is complete. During the reaction, molecular oxygen is added to the mixture; air is expediently simply blown in. Depending on the type of reaction conditions used, i. H. Grain size of the materials used, air or pure oxygen supply, temperature, mixing effect, etc., the reaction times can be within wide limits (from 10 minutes at e.g.
continuous operation; up to, for example, 20 hours in other cases).
The implementation can be carried out very well in a shovel rocker of the usual type provided with beater bars. But it is also possible in other heatable devices for grinding and / or mixing. The continuous operation using solid reactors based on the principle of continuously operating ball mills has proven particularly advantageous.
The reaction mixture can be worked up in a conventional manner known per se by taking it up in water, in which the alkali compounds of hydroxyl-containing nitroaryl bodies are known to be soluble, the solution is filtered off from the remaining solids and the free hydroxyaryl compounds are precipitated by the addition of acid.
Example I.
8 g of 4-nitrochlorobenzene and 32 g of potassium hydroxide powder are stirred together with 800 g of glass beads with a diameter of 3 mm in a beaker equipped with a stirrer while a flow of dry air of about 200 ml per minute is introduced. The mixture heats up to about 500 C and turns brownish-orange in color. After 11/2 hours, the mixture is cooled in an ice bath, 400 ml of ice water are added, 2.0 g of unreacted 4-nitrochlorobenzene are filtered off after the glass beads have been sieved off and the filtrate is strongly acidified.
The precipitated product is filtered off with suction, washed with water and dried over phosphorus pentoxide at room temperature. 5.4 g (81.7% of theory, based on non-regenerated 4-nitrochlorobenzene) of 5-chloro-2-nitrophenol are obtained as gray-gray crystals with a melting point of 38 to 400 ° C. A preparation purified by steam distillation and recrystallization from petroleum ether melts at 42 to 430 C and also agrees in the other properties with the product described in the literature.
If 4-nitroiodobenzene is used instead of 4-nitrochlorobenzene, 5-iodo-2-nitrophenol is obtained in a similar yield as yellow crystals with a melting point of 93 to 950 C.
