EMI0002.0057

Process for the preparation of aromatic compounds The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of aromatic compounds of the formula
EMI0001.0011
in which R1, R2, R3 and R4 represent hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy or hydroxyalkyl radicals having 1 to 3 carbon atoms; n stands for zero or 1.
The inventive method consists in that one compound of the formula
EMI0001.0015
with activated manganese dioxide at a temperature between 20 and 360 C for 5 minutes to 25 hours.
Activated manganese dioxide is a sufficiently known material (see. Evans, Quarterly Reviews, 13, pages 61-70, 1959). It is a form of hydrated manganese dioxide and is generally produced by reacting manganese (II) sulfate with potassium permanganate in a hot aqueous solution in the presence of sufficient amounts of alkali to maintain an alkaline pH ensure in the reaction mixture.
After washing with water, the resulting slurry is dried at 100 to 120 ° C., whereby the activated manganese dioxide is obtained.
It can be produced by converting manganese (II) sulfate and potassium permanganate in a hot aqueous solution in the absence of alkali. The resulting mixture is strongly acidic, the slurry is dried at 100 to 120 ° C. and activated manganese dioxide is obtained. The preparation can also be made by heating manganese oxalate or manganese carbonate to 250 C.
The resulting products can either be used directly or after washing with dilute aqueous nitric acid and drying at 230.degree.
In the process according to the invention, inter alia, certain bis (tetraalkylhydroxyphenyl) methanes and tetraalkylhydroxyphenyls can be produced. The latter compounds can in particular be used as antioxidants.
Numerous methods for the preparation of substituted tetramethyldiphenylmethanes, in particular 4,4-dihydroxy-3,3 ', 5,5'-tetramethyldiphenylmethanes, are known from the literature. For example, such materials have been made by reacting 2,6-xylenol and formaldehyde in the presence of a basic substance. Production from mesitol under the action of hydrogen peroxide and ferrous sulfate has also been reported.
Suitable starting materials for the preparation of aromatic compounds according to the present invention have .die: general formula
EMI0001.0069
in which R1, R ", R3 and R4 are hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy or hydroxyalkyl groups having 1 to 3 carbon atoms and n is the number zero or 1. Special compounds of this type are, for example
Phenol, 2,6-xylenol-1, 2,3,5,6-tetramethylphenol, 2,6-dimethoxyphenol, mesitol, 2,6-dimethyl-4-hydroxymethylphenol and 2,6-dichlorophenol.
As already mentioned, aromatic compounds according to the present invention are prepared by treating a phenol or a substituted phenol of the above formula II with activated manganese dioxide.
The use of activated manganese dioxide is crucial for the success of the process, since the ordinary manganese dioxide is not sufficiently effective. The phenol or the substituted phenol can be brought into contact with the activated manganese dioxide either in the presence or in the absence of a solvent and in the presence or absence of a free oxygen-containing gas such as air. Under certain conditions, the presence of free oxygen-containing gas affects this
End product. The specific solvent used also influences the end product, as will be explained below.
According to a preferred embodiment, the phenol or substituted phenol is dissolved in a suitable solvent in the presence of activated manganese dioxide before heating, after which the activated manganese dioxide is added to the resulting solution. Suitable solvents for the implementation are, for. B. chloroform, acetone, benzene, toluene, nitrobenzene and dimethylformamide. Chloroform and benzene are preferred.
The temperature at which the reaction according to the invention takes place can vary widely. It was found that significant amounts of aromatic products are formed at temperatures as low as 20 C. If phenol or substituted phenol is not dissolved in a solvent, the maximum temperature at which the reaction can take place is determined only by the decomposition temperature of the phenol.
If you work in a solvent, the maximum temperature is determined by the boiling point of the solvent at the pressure applied. While one can work according to the invention at temperatures between about 20 and 360 C, the range from 60 to 225 C is preferred.
The reaction time can vary between 5 minutes and 25 hours. It is preferred to work in the range between about 0.5 and 25 hours.
The molar ratio between activated manganese dioxide and phenol or phenol derivative can also be largely variable. It has been found that even in the presence of traces of activated manganese dioxide, small amounts of aromatic product are formed. In order to improve the yields, it is advisable to maintain a molar ratio between activated manganese dioxide and phenol between about 0.5 to 1 and 100 to 1, with molar ratios between about 3: 1 and 10: 1 being preferred.
It has been found that the use of certain solvents affects the yield of the desired end product. As a rule, in addition to the desired compounds of the formula I, aromatic ethers or polyethers of the formula are formed
EMI0002.0057
where A is a member of the formula
EMI0002.0058
x is zero or an integer from 1 to 20,000 and B is hydrogen, a methyl, hydroxyl or hydroxymethyl group.
These products have a higher oxygen content than those of the formula: I. A process for the production of these ethers is the subject of patent no. 502 287 of the owner of the present patent.
<I> Example 1 </I> A solution of 4.53 g of mesitol in 50 ml of benzene was refluxed with 8.70 g of manganese dioxide under nitrogen for 2 hours. After cooling and filtering, the benzene solution was washed with 100 ml of 5% sodium hydroxide solution. The benzene solution was then evaporated to give 2.2512 g of residue, which was treated with 150 ml of petroleum ether; 0.212 g of a material whose IR spectrum corresponded to that of mesitol dissolved. The remaining residue showed the same IR spectrum as authentic 2,6-xylenol polymer.
The above-mentioned basic solution was acidified and extracted with ethyl ether. The ethereal solution was dried over magnesium sulfate and the ether chased away, leaving a residue of 1.14 g, which was treated with 300 ml of petroleum ether; since 0.585 g of unreacted mesitol were dissolved. The residue, the mass spectrum of which showed a main maximum at 256, was recrystallized from benzene petroleum ether, a product of the. Melting point 175 to 176 ° C.
When mixing with authentic 4,4'-dihydroxy-3,3 ', 5,5'-tetramethyldiphenylmethane, produced from 2,6-xylenol and formaldehyde, there was no depression of the melting point.
The yield of diphenylmethane was 150. <I> Example 2 </I> A solution of 4.53 g of mesitol in 50 ml of benzene was refluxed over 4.35 g of activated manganese dioxide in a nitrogen atmosphere for 4 hours. The product was worked up as described in Example 1. The non-base-soluble fractions were 1.915 g, while the base-soluble material was 1.830 g.
The latter consisted of a mixture which, due to the differences in solubility in petroleum ether, was broken down into 2 components. The fraction soluble in petroleum ether consisted of 0.454g mesitol, while the remainder consisted of 4,4'-dihydroxy-3,3 ', 5,5'-tetra-methyldiphenylmethane, which by IR,
UV and vapor phase chromatography was identified by comparison with an authentic sample. The yield of the latter compound was 30%. <I> Example 3 </I> A solution of 18.02 g mesitol in 200 ml benzene was used over 34,
8 g of activated manganese dioxide were refluxed overnight in a nitrogen atmosphere (in 3.5 atmospheres). The polymeric material was obtained in accordance with the procedure of Example 1 in a yield of 27/110. The base-soluble portion of the reaction product weighed 3.58 g, 1 g of which consisted of mesitol.
The remainder consisted of an almost equimolar mixture (based on IR analysis and mass spectrum) of 4,4-dihydroxy-3,3 ', 5,5'-tetramethyldiphenylmethane and 1,2- (4,4'-dihydroxy-3,3 ', 5,5'-tetramethyldiphenyl) ethane (by-product).
<I> Example 4 </I> A solution of 41 g of 2,6-xylenol in 350 ml of chloroform was activated over 8.7 g for 5 hours. Manganese dioxide was refluxed while a stream of air was blown through .the solution. At the end of this reaction time the mixture was filtered and the filtrate was washed with 200 ml of 5% sodium hydroxide solution. When the basic washing solution was acidified, a pink precipitate was obtained which was cooled and dried.
The solid was extracted with petroleum ether (boiling point 30 to 60 C) in order to remove unreacted 2,6-xylenol. The remaining solid material was recrystallized from petroleum ether (boiling point 65 to 110 C),
a white powder with a melting point of 222 ° C. to 224 ° C. was obtained. When the IR spectrum was compared with that of an authentic sample (prepared by reducing 3,3 ', 5,5'-tetramethyldiphenoquinone with tin and acetic acid), this material was found to be composed of 4,4'-dihydroxy-3, 3 ', 5,5'-tetramethylbiphenyl consisting. According to literature (B. O. Lindgrem, Acta Chem.
Scand. 14, 1208) the melting point of the authentic material is 223 to <B> 225 '</B> C.
