Dumbbell
The present invention relates to dumbbells generally used for gymnastic exercises.
Dumbbells are devices comprising two spherical or other shaped weights connected by a handle. In existing dumbbells, these weights are rigidly attached to the handle which, in particular for high weights and certain gymnastic movements leads to certain drawbacks for the gymnast such as cramps, etc.
The present invention relates to a dumbbell comprising a handle connected to weights tending to obviate the aforementioned drawbacks by the fact that each weight is articulated on the handle.
The accompanying drawing illustrates schematically and by way of example various embodiments of the dumbbell according to the present invention.
Fig. 1 is a view partially in longitudinal section of a first embodiment of a dumbbell.
Fig. 2 is a view of a dumbbell locking circlip illustrated in FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a partial view in longitudinal section of a second embodiment of the dumbbell.
Fig. 4 is a partial view in longitudinal section of a third embodiment of the dumbbell.
Fig. 5 is an end view of the internal face of a weight of the dumbbell illustrated in FIG. 4.
Fig. 6 is a partial view in longitudinal section of a fourth embodiment of the dumbbell.
Fig. 7 is an end elevation of the handle of the dumbbell illustrated in FIG. 6.
Fig. 8 is a partial view in longitudinal section of a fifth embodiment of the dumbbell.
The dumbbell which is the subject of the present patent comprises a handle I generally of cylindrical shape, at least in its middle part intended to be taken in the hand, and two weights 2 each connected to one of the ends of the handle.
The originality of this dumbbell lies in the fact that these weights 2 are articulated on the handle 1 and not rigidly fixed to the latter as is the case in the existing dumbbells.
In the first embodiment illustrated in FIGS.
1 and 2 the weights 2 are pivoted on the handle 1 around an axis coincident with that of the handle 1.
Each weight has a blind hole 3 opening onto its internal face 4, directed towards the handle 1, intended to receive the end of this handle. The internal wall of this blind hole 3 comprises an annular groove 5, the cross section of which is for example a semicircle.
Each of the ends of the handle 1 has a diameter slightly smaller than the bore of the hole 3 and, located at a distance a from the end of the handle lower than the distance b separating the bottom of the hole 3 from the groove 5, a groove 6 annular. This groove 6 may have the same diameter as the groove 5 and also has a cross section in the form of a semicircle.
The front part of the ends of the handle 1 comprises a frustoconical part 7 which in a variant could be replaced by an annular surface for example. This part constitutes a ramp, the usefulness of which will appear later.
A split spring steel circlip 8 is housed in the assembled position of the dumbbell in the groove 6 and the groove 5 and thus locks the weight 2 on the end of the handle 1.
The nominal internal diameter of the circlip 8 is less than the external diameter of the handle 1 or of its end at least while the nominal external diameter of this circlip 8 is greater than the bore of the blind hole 3. Finally, the diameter of the wire forming the circlip corresponds to the radius of curvature of groove 6 and groove 5 but is in any case greater than the clearance existing between the end of the handle 1 and the hole 3.
The assembly of a weight 2 on the handle 1 is carried out as follows:
The circlip is introduced into the blind hole 3 by compressing it and allowed to expand inside the groove 5. Thus it is held in place in the weight but emerges inside the hole 3.
The end of the handle 1 is then introduced into the blind hole 3 and, thanks to the ramp 7, the circlip 8 is elastically deformed which expands inside the groove 5. At the moment when the groove 6 is placed in the plane of the groove 5, the circlip 8, under the action of its own elasticity, tightens and partially enters this groove 6. It thus provides axial locking of the handle 1 with respect to the weight 2 while allowing rotation of the weight in relation to the handle.
In the second embodiment (fig. 3) the articulation between the handle 1 and each of the weights 2 of the dumbbell is produced by a ball bearing 9, a cage of which is forced out or fixed by any known means, in the bore 3 of the weight while the other cage is rigidly fixed to the end of the handle.
Here also each weight 2 can rotate relative to the handle 1 around the axis of this handle.
In this second embodiment, each weight 2 comprises a tire 21 made of natural or synthetic rubber consisting of a ring of rectangular section engaged only partially in a circular recess made in the peripheral surface of the weight 2. This elastic protective tire avoids clash the dumbbells.
In variants, the ball bearings can be replaced by needle or roller bearings.
It is obvious that in variants of the two forms of execution described, the blind hole 3 could be replaced by a hole passing right through the weights 2. Similarly, the diameter of the middle part of the handle may be different from the diameter of its sides. ends.
The third embodiment of the dumbbell illustrated in FIGS. 4 and 5 comprises a pin 13 forced into a bore transversely passing through the end of the handle. This pin 13 emerges out of the peripheral surface of the handle. As before, the weights include a bore 3 in the internal surface of which an annular groove 5 is made.
Diametrically opposed countersinks 14 are made in the wall of the bore 3 and connect the groove 5 to the internal face 4 of the weight 2.
To couple the handle 1 to the weight, the user introduces the end of the handle into the hole 3 of a weight by inserting the ends of the pin 13 into the countersinks 14. Once the desired relative position between the handle and the weight , the ends of the pin are located in the groove 5 and the weight 2 can move angularly around the axis of the handle 1 although the axial position of these two elements is locked.
In the illustrated embodiment, a pivoting stop 15 is provided to close one of the countersinks 14 in order to prevent any untimely separation of the weight from its handle.
In the fourth embodiment illustrated in FIGS. 6 and 7 the articulation of each weight 2 on the ends of the handle 1 is obtained by a device of the press-stud type. Each end of the handle 1 ends in a male member 10 of generally spherical shape, forming a ball joint engaged in a corresponding female formation 11 formed in the weight 2.
Locking of the axial position of the weights 2 with respect to the handle is thus obtained while a relative rotation of the weights with respect to the handle is authorized.
In the illustrated embodiment, the male member 10 is provided with slots 12 giving it its own elasticity against which it can be deformed to have a smaller diameter or at least equal to the diameter of the opening of the female formation 11. Thus, by applying a relatively large axial force between a weight and its handle, it is possible to couple or decouple them at will. It is thus conceivable that different weights can be mounted on the same handle according to the wishes of the user.
It is obvious that in a variant the weight 2 could not include the bore 3 and the female part 11 of the snap-button coupling would be made directly in the internal wall 4 of the weight 2.
Finally in the last embodiment illustrated in FIG. 8 the connection between each weight 2 and the corresponding end of the handle 1 is made by means of a connecting rod 16, the ends of which are connected by ball and socket couplings or of the press-stud type one to the weight 2 and the 'another at one end of the handle 1.
In this embodiment, the weight 2 comprises a conically shaped recess 17 intended to cooperate with the outer wall 18 of the end of the handle. In addition, the handle 1 also comprises a recess 19 of generally conical shape giving passage to the connecting rod 16.
In this embodiment, the weights of a dumbbell can rotate around the axis of the connecting rod 16 which can form an angle with the axis of the handle 1.
In this latter embodiment, each weight 2 comprises a protective cap 20 made of a flexible and elastic material such as natural or synthetic rubber.
The main advantage of the dumbbell described, whatever the embodiment considered, consists in preventing the gymnast performing movements with a dumbbell having to provide a torque on the handle of the dumbbell. . Such a torque appears in particular for heavy dumbbells when they are moved along a curved path. Thanks to the arrangement described, the appearance of such a torque, due to the inertia forces relating to the weights, is avoided by the angular uncoupling of the weights with respect to the handle. Thus the effect produced by the dumbbell comes down to the application, in its center of gravity, of a pure vertical shape without the intervention of torque, whatever the rotation of the handle 1 around its axis caused by the gymnastic movements.
It goes without saying that the shape of the weights 2 does not matter and that they can be spherical, parallelepiped, cylindrical or others. Likewise, the generally metallic material, from which the dumbbell is made, can be chosen according to the needs or desires of the user. A chemical or electro-chemical surface treatment can give the constituent parts of the dumbbell a particular appearance.
Finally in a variant of the embodiment illustrated in FIGS. 6 and 7, the bore 3 of the weights could have a frustoconical shape. The end of the handle would be provided with a chamfer or an end conical part so that the weight would be, as in the last embodiment free to rotate around the axis of the handle but also to pivot in a plane containing this axis around the ball joint.
