Optical second beat indicator incorporated into a clockwork movement
The present invention relates to an optical indicator of the beat of the second incorporated in a clockwork movement.
One kind of indicator of this kind is already known; it consists in closing off one or more apertures, made in the dial, by means of a plate formed of three sectors which is fixed on the axis of the anchor wheel of a usual anchor escapement (18,000 vibrations / hour ).
This embodiment, which works perfectly, nevertheless has several drawbacks which practically make it unusable: among others, the usual position of the anchor wheel does not allow a suitable arrangement of the counters; the opening of the counters, limited to a sector of 120, is too narrow, resulting in a certain lack of visibility; the significant increase in the moment of inertia of the escape wheel, resulting from the large shutter fixed to the axis of this wheel, goes against the theory generally accepted by watchmakers of all times.
The device according to the invention, which has the advantage of correcting all these defects, consists of an optical indicator of the beat of the second incorporated in a timepiece movement, comprising at least one opening made in the dial and through which passes a shutter so that, every second,
The appearance of the bottom of the opening changes rapidly, characterized in that the shutter is fixed to the axis of a pinion driven by a toothed wheel fixed to the axis of the escape wheel.
The choice of the size of the toothed wheel as that of the position of the pinion axis makes it possible to make the opening in the dial at the desired location.
The multiplication ratio between the teeth of the wheel and the flanges of the pinion makes it possible to obtain a path larger than that of the escape wheel, which, consequently, allows the enlargement of the apertures. By the appropriate calculation of this gear ratio the achievement of the beat of the second becomes possible for all vibrations / hour multiples of 3600. For example, for 36,000 vibrations / hour and a 21-tooth escape wheel, the wheel toothed will have 42 teeth and the pinion 10 wings; thus the pinion will make one revolution in one second and the shutter attached to it will have only one sector of 360.
Given that the shutter mobile is very light, that it moves on non-lubricated bearings and that it is free of any function, this guarantees constant and lasting ease of movement. This mobile coupled to the escape wheel acts as a sort of steering wheel regulator, proof of this is the precision obtained which exceeds the level of the usual average, so that the prejudice relating to the problem of inertia at the escapement seems to be defeated, a new distribution of force coming into play.
The appended drawing shows, by way of example, two embodiments, namely A and B. In these two examples, on the axis 1 of the escape wheel, which is not shown in the drawing, is fixed a toothed wheel 2 meshing with a pinion 3 (one 2 and the other 3 being represented by their pitch circumference), on the axis of this pinion 3 is fixed the shutter 4 (white) whose function is to close the window 5 (with black background) made in the dial 6; arrows indicate direction of rotation; pinion 3 makes one revolution in two seconds.
Example A shows window 5 closed during the last alternation-balance of the second; the following alternation-balance will clear the opening of window 5 and its black background will appear for the duration of one second, then, at the end of this time, shutter 4, which will have made a U-turn , will be able to close window 5 which will become white again for the next second. Thus, the successive appearance of the window 5 in white and in black precisely defines the beat of the second.
In example B, window 5 is only closed off during a rapid alternation-balance, that which occurs at regular intervals - of one second. The beating of the second thus manifests itself in a kind of <(very characteristic flash.
