Process for the production of disazo pigments
No technically useful process for the preparation of disazo dye pigments by coupling diazotized amines with bis- [2-hydroxynaphthoyl- (3)] arylenediamines, which are particularly sparingly soluble in water, has been described in the patent literature. The great difficulty of producing such pigments by the coupling route in an aqueous medium has repeatedly been stated in the literature, e.g. B. in the article New organic pigment dyes and their use, by M. Schmid in the Deutsche Farben-Zeitschrift 9, page 253 (1955), in DAS No. 1 066 680, in DBP No. 921 223 and in the article Les pigments organiques by J. Lenoir in Peintures Pigments Vernis, 36, page 714 (1960).
In order to circumvent these difficulties, for example, Swiss patents No.
343 044 and No. 365 469 couplings by kneading or stirring stabilized diazo compounds with the bis [2-hydroxynaphthoyl- (3)] -arylene-diamines in anhydrous organic solvents.
However, the dyes are obtained in a modification that is unsuitable for pigment purposes. The conversion of these pigments into a form that can be used for pigment technology requires additional work, and an organic solvent is again required. Another disadvantage of this process is that the diazoamido compound requires careful drying.
The coupling of diazo compounds to the Mannich bases of bis- [2-hydroxynaphthoyl- (3) j -arylenediamines, described in Belgian patent specification 587 115, has the advantage of proceeding in an aqueous medium. However, the production of the Mannich bases requires an additional operation. In addition, because of the sensitivity of the Mannich bases, this process presents great difficulties when carried out on an industrial scale.
Finally, the Swiss patent 397 913 describes the coupling of diazotized amines with bis- [2-hydroxynaphthoyl3) j -arylenediamines in aqueous suspension with the addition of dispersants and larger amounts of organic solvents using grinding forces, such as those in ball or sand mills, high-speed stirrers, can be generated in high pressure mills or ultrasonic devices. The disadvantage of this process is that when the aqueous solution of the diazonium salt is added, the coupling component precipitates and accordingly a heterogeneous system is present during the coupling, which has a very negative effect on the speed of the coupling.
In addition, this process requires a large outlay in terms of equipment and is therefore hardly more advantageous when carried out on a large technical scale than the coupling processes described above.
It has now been found that pure disazo dyes in a form which is favorable for pigment purposes and which of the formula are obtained in a simple manner
EMI1.1
in which Rt is an aryl radical, R2 is a naphthalene radical in which the azo, hydroxy and carboxamide group are in the 1,2,3-position, R3 is an arylene radical when a diazoamino compound containing the radical Rl is mixed with a naphthol of the formula

heated in an aqueous-organic solvent, in the presence of an organic acid, preferably a polyhalogenated fatty acid.
The aryldiazoamides to be used according to the process are obtained by known processes by condensation of an aryldiazonium salt with a primary or, preferably, with a secondary amine. A wide variety of amines, for example aliphatic amines, especially those of the formula, are suitable for this purpose
EMI2.2
in which R4 and R5 are alkyl radicals or cycloalkyl radicals, where the radicals R4 and R3 can also form a heterocyclic ring together with the nitrogen atom. Heterocyclic amines of the formula are of particular interest

Examples include: dimethylamine, diethylamine, diethanolamine, methylethanolamine, dipropylamine, dibutylamine, N-methylcyclohexylamine, dicyclohexylamine, pyrrolidine, piperidine or morpholine.
As a rule, the diazoamido compounds obtained are sparingly soluble in cold water and can, if appropriate after salting out, be filtered off in crystalline form from the reaction medium.
The aqueous, moist press cakes of the diazonium compounds are preferably used for the further reaction.
The arylamines from which the diazonium salts are obtained by diazotization preferably correspond to the formula

The diazonium compounds of these bases are dinaphthols with the formula
EMI3.1
to couple, the acid present during the coupling causing a previous cleavage of the diazoamido compound at an elevated temperature. Suitable acids are organic acids, for example formic acid, acetic acid, 4-toluenesulfonic acid, polyhalogenated fatty acids, in particular trihalocarboxylic acids, such as trichloroacetic and trifluoroacetic acid and trichloroacrylic acid.
Examples of possible dinaphthols are the bis [2-hydroxynaphthoyl- (3)] aminodiphenyls, but especially those of the formula
EMI3.2
wherein X1 and Y1 are hydrogen or halogen atoms, alkyl, trifluoromethyl or alkoxy groups, Z is a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkoxy group.

The coupling of the diazoamino compounds with the naphthol takes place in an organic solvent, for example chlorobenzene, o-dichlorobenzene, nitrobenzene, pyridine, ethylene glycol, ethylene glycol monomethyl or monoethyl ether, dimethylformamide, formic acid or acetic acid.
In general it is not necessary to use the diazoamino compounds in anhydrous form. For example, the watery, moist Nutschku.- chen can be used. The cleavage of the diazoamino compound preceding the coupling takes place in an acidic medium. If neutral solvents are used, as already mentioned, the addition of an acid is necessary.
The coupling is expediently carried out in the heat, preferably at temperatures between 60 and 1800 C, and is generally very rapid and complete.
Thanks to their insolubility, the pigments obtained can be isolated from the reaction mixture by filtration. Since the by-products remain in solution, the pigments obtained are of excellent purity. Post-treatment with organic solvents, as is necessary in the case of pigments that are obtained by the aqueous coupling route, is therefore unnecessary in most cases. Another advantage of the process according to the invention is the high yield, the form which is favorable in terms of pigment technology, and the constancy of the properties of the pigments obtained.
Thanks to their favorable properties, the pigments obtainable according to the process can be used for a wide variety of pigment applications, e.g. B. in finely divided form for dyeing rayon and viscose or cellulose ethers and esters or superpolyamides or super-polyurethanes or polyesters in the spinning mass, as well as for the production of colored lacquers or lacquer formers, solutions or products made of acetyl cellulose, nitrocellulose, natural resins or synthetic resins, such as polymerization resins or condensation resins, e.g. B. aminoplasts, alkyd resins, phenoplasts, polyolefins, such as polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyacrylonitrile, rubber, casein, silicone and silicone resins.
They can also be used advantageously in the production of colored pencils, cosmetic preparations or laminating plates.
Compared to the synthesis route known as a condensation process (see German patent specification 921 223, Case 2814), the process according to the invention has the advantage that diazo components can also be used which are unsuitable for the formation of azo dye carboxylic acid chlorides, such as. B. aminobenzene-carboxamides, aminobenzenesulfonamides, aminobenzene-sulfo-arylamides, etc. The new simple process therefore not only allows the efficient production of known color bodies, but it also enables the synthesis of new valuable disazo pigments.
