The new carbamates are made by optionally reacting in the sequence a reactive derivative of carbonic acid with a phenol of the formula
EMI2.3
or a salt of this phenol and an amine of the formula
EMI2.4
produced, where R1, R2, X1 and X have the meaning given.
The reaction of a reactive derivative of carbonic acid with a phenol and an amine III can, as indicated above, optionally take place in the sequence, this depending somewhat on the constitution of the end product.
According to the method, one can proceed, for example, in such a way that a phenol II or an alkali metal salt thereof is reacted with phosgene and the chlorocarbonate or carbonate obtained is reacted with an amine III.
However, the amine III can also be initially reacted with phosgene and the carbamic acid chloride obtained or the isocyanate easily formed therefrom, if either R1 or R2 in the formula I is to be hydrogen, can be reacted with the phenol II. It is also possible to allow a urethane derived from the amine of the formula III, preferably an alkyl urethane, to react with a phenol of the formula II (transesterification).
It is also possible to allow a urea derived from an amine of the formula III to react with a phenol of the formula II, preferably at elevated temperatures.
The acetalization can take place with the aid of monohydric or dihydric alcohols. In the first case the open acetals are obtained, in the second case ring formation takes place.
Some of the phenols of the formula II are described in the literature and some are new. They are usually produced by reacting appropriate aldehydes with alcohols or mercaptans in the presence of catalysts such as ZnClo, mineral acids, p-toluenesulfonic acid, etc.
The new carbamates of the formula I according to the invention have insecticidal, acaricidal, herbicidal, bactericidal and molluscicidal properties.
In the following examples, parts by weight are referred to as parts:
Example I o- [bis (2-hydroxyethylmercapto) methyl] phenol
In the mixture of 150 parts of 2-mercapto-ethanol and 10 parts by volume of conc. Hydrochloric acid were stirred in 61 parts of salicylaldehyde while cooling with ice. The product was then stirred for 1 hour at room temperature, extracted twice with 200 parts by volume of chloroform, dissolved in ether and washed with twice 250 parts by volume of cold saturated potassium bicarbonate solution. The solution was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered, evaporated and the last residues of solvent were removed in a high vacuum.
The highly viscous residue was identified as pure o- [bis (2-hydroxyethylmercapto) methyl] phenol. o-bis (2-hydroxyethyl mercapto) methyl] phenyl N-methyl carbamate
39 parts of the above mercaptal were dissolved in 250 parts by volume of dry ether, and 0.2 parts of triethylenediamine and 9.5 parts of methyl isocyanate were added.
The solution heats up and the carbamate formed separates out as an oil. The last residues of solvent were removed in a high vacuum: Comp. No. 1.
Example 2 o- (1,3-Oxathiolan-2-yl) -phenol
82 parts of 2-mercaptoethanol were admixed with 0.5 parts by volume of concentrated hydrochloric acid and then, dropwise, with 122 parts of salicylaldehyde, the mixture heating up. The reaction product was stirred for a further 1 hour at room temperature, then diluted with 500 parts by volume of ether and washed neutral with sodium bicarbonate solution and water. The solution was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and evaporated.
The viscous residue was heated in a high vacuum at a bath temperature of 1600 and the volatile components were condensed. The condensate was then fractionated. At 1120 / 0.05 mmHg, the o- (1,3-oxathiolan-2-yl) phenol formed distills over and crystallizes on standing.
M.p. 72-740. o- (1,3-Oxathiolan-2-yl) -phenyl-N-methyl-carbamate [comp. No. 2]
37 parts of o- (1,3-oxathiolan-2-yl) phenol were dissolved in 100 parts by volume of dry toluene, and 15 parts of methyl isocyanate and 0.1 part of triethylenediamine were added. The temperature of the mixture was kept below 350 by gentle cooling. After a few hours, the product which had crystallized out was filtered off and crystallized from toluene or carbon tetrachloride.
M.p. 108-1090.
Example 3 o- (1,3-Dithiolan-2-yl) -phenol
0.1 part of concentrated hydrochloric acid was added to the mixture of 10.4 parts of ethanedithiol and 12.2 parts of salicylaldehyde, with intense heating occurring. The reaction product was dissolved in 100 parts by volume of toluene and washed neutral with sodium bicarbonate solution and water. The solution was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and evaporated. The residue was distilled in a high vacuum.
