Process for mechanical plating, mixture for carrying out this process and molded bodies plated by this process The present invention relates to a process for so-called mechanical plating of molded bodies and materials which can be used to carry out one of the like processes.
In typical mechanical plating processes, molded bodies, for example metal objects that are to be plated, compact particles of a plating metal and chemicals that support the plating process and, if necessary, impact bodies, such as e.g. B. small particles of glass or other materials, placed in a ball mill or a centrifugal drum.
The mill or the drum is then rotated, the kinetic energy of the impact body or the objects to be plated being transferred to the particles of the plating metal in such a way that this is hammered or hit onto the surface of the shaped bodies to be plated. Up until now, it was customary to fill all materials into the drum at the beginning of the plating process so that they were available immediately.
These known mechanical plating methods described above were only applicable to a limited extent, and in many cases it was not possible to produce the desired degree of adhesion between the metallic plating agent and the object to be plated.
When appropriate amounts of plating-assisting chemicals were added to the original charge to the drum so that all or almost all of the plating metals were applied to the material to be plated, a thick, vesicular plating would separate out at the very beginning of the spinning process. For this reason, the particles of the plating metal were not only applied to desired locations on the surface of the shaped body to be plated, but they were deposited thereon in an uncontrolled manner and at too great a speed.
The particles of the cladding metal that have only just separated out therefore absorbed the impact energies most strongly and consumed them, this energy transfer by impact having the most favorable effect on the cladding metal particles that are closest to the substrate. The plating produced by this method was also uneven, spongy, insufficiently compact and lumpy, so that the plating did not have sufficient gloss and was completely different in thickness.
The aim of the present invention was to develop a method in which the deposition rate of the plating metal particles on the substrate can be regulated so that the number of particles does not exceed that on the substrate and on the underlying and adjacent ones Plating metal particles can be hammered smooth and cold-welded under the influence of the available kinetic energy.
Furthermore, the method should make it possible to produce a plated surface that is glossy, ductile and chipping-resistant, does not form flakes, is coherent, uniform and compact and adheres to the substrate in a break-proof manner.
The present invention relates to a method for mechanical plating of shaped bodies with a plating metal, in which the shaped bodies, an inert liquid, the particles of the plating metal and chemicals supporting the plating process are placed in a plating drum and the plating is carried out using the sets in motion materials contained in the drum, which is characterized by
that either the particles of the plating metal or the chemicals supporting the plating process, or both of these materials, are initially not present in the plating drum in an amount sufficient to achieve the desired metal plating, and that then gradually during a substantial part of the plating process the remainder the components initially present in insufficient quantities are added. Preferably, the plating process is carried out in the presence of baffles.
The invention also relates to a mixture for carrying out the method according to the invention, which is characterized in that it contains chemicals which support the plating process and or plating metal particles together with a binder and is in solid form. These moldings slowly disintegrate during the plating process. This mixture is preferably in the form of an ingot.
Furthermore, the invention relates to clad molded bodies using the method according to the invention. Surprisingly, the method according to the invention not only achieves better results than the previously known method, but the process can also be carried out in a shorter time.
By adjusting the amount of the plating process assisting chemicals, which are also called chemical plating auxiliaries in the following, and / or the amount of the particles of the plating metal to such a value that is necessary for only a thin layer of plating metal particles too rapid a deposition rate is prevented.
This allows sufficient mechanical energy to act on the plating metal particles of such a thin coating simply and inexpensively when they are deposited so that they are suitably and directly hammered, deformed, distorted and connected to one another by the moving impact medium and with the Surface of the substrate are brought into intimate contact. The plating produced in this way adheres firmly to the substrate surface, and it is constructed in such a way that it appears microscopically as a remarkably uniform, well-adhering, dense and contiguous planarization.
In a preferred embodiment of the process of the invention, the chemical plating aid, the plating metal particles, or both are used to produce a solid cake or ingot which is compressed with a binding agent under sufficient pressure so that it has the desired degree of density. When such ingots are placed in the plating drum, they dissolve or they gradually disintegrate, thereby ensuring gradual deposition of the non-plating metal on the substrate.
By varying the pressure in the manufacture of the ingot, the speed of dissolution or disintegration and thereby the speed with which the components are made available can be tailored precisely to the specific requirements imposed by the desired coating thickness, the shape of the surface surface of the molded body, etc. are given to be adjusted.
By using the aforementioned solid bars, an unskilled worker can be quickly trained to perform the plating process, and good results are still achieved. Some benefit can be achieved by slowly adding either the particles of the plating metal or just the chemical plating aid during a substantial portion of the plating process, with the remainder of the full load in the drum, but it appears to give the best results can then be achieved if the two ge named materials are added gradually.
Plates which are produced by the process according to the invention generally correspond to or are superior to electrically deposited platings with regard to their adhesion to the surface of the substrate, and they significantly outperform the electrically deposited platings with regard to their ductility. Steel wire nails clad according to the method according to the invention can be bent with a very narrow curvature diameter without hairline cracks forming,
a rise of the plating, chipping, flaking, tearing, lifting, chipping or peeling off of the plating occurs, while nails that have been electroplated to a corresponding thickness fail either of these tests.
The superiority of the coatings produced according to the invention was proven by the Preecep test (ASTM A239-41) for zinc plating on steel by microscopic examination of the surfaces and by sections of the clad molding, as well as by the period of time that elapsed before rust forms, when zinc or cadmium plated steel parts are treated after the salt spray test according to ASTM B117-54T.
Firmly adhering and coherent metal plating can be deposited on the slots in the screw heads as well as in the recesses of the thread of a screw, and the inside, outside and the edge surfaces of intricately built fastening devices can be plated in the same way satisfactorily. It appears that previously known plating processes have never had such good results.
Two mechanical plating methods were compared directly by plotting a portion of steel wire nails with the weight gain versus the time they were treated in a typical tumbler under identical conditions.
In the first approach, which was carried out according to the previously known method, the entire chemical aid and all zinc particles were added at the beginning of the leveling process and in the second approach, which was carried out according to the process according to the invention, part of the chemical plating aid was added and some of the zinc particles are gradually added in equal portions. It turned out. that there was a direct and related relationship between time and weight gain in the second approach b: while there was no such direct relationship with the first approach.
Comparisons similar to those just described were made by plotting plating thicknesses against shake time. If all components were present in the loading of the drum right from the start, then the curve was extremely steep, from which it can be seen that very thick agglomerations of non-cohesive metal plating particles form very soon. In contrast, the curve was when the chemical adjuvant and the zinc particles were added in small amounts. less steep, and it increased in steepness as the frequency of addition of the particularly small portions increased.
Since there is only a limited amount of hammering energy available during a certain period of time, it is obvious that the extent of the direct hammering effect. to which the innermost and subsequent clusters of cladding metal particles were exposed, the flatter the curve, the greater.
A bar of the chemical additive can be produced by stirring the required chemicals and / or a cleaning agent and / or 2 liters of water at 21 ° C.
The metal plating ingot described above can also contain small particles of the plating metal so that a controlled release into the batch takes place. These metal particles can be mixed with other components. In order to avoid contamination, oxidation or other types of reactions, the particles of the plating metal may have a protective coating, for example a coating of a plastic or a resin. These coatings can be scraped off by shaking or by shock.
It is also possible that the protective substances are incorporated into the bar in the form of disintegrating plastic pellets or capsules, these capsules forming an intermediate layer between the metal and the other components.
The above-described bar for metal plating can also be equipped with an outer casing which contains the required putty means so that all the components of the plating batch, with the exception of the liquid and the shaped bodies to be plated, are available in a single package.
<I> Example 1 </I> 1362 g of conventional 6d steel wire nails were cleaned by allowing an alkaline solution with a pH of 13 at 75 to 90 ° C. to act on them for 5 minutes. They were then rinsed, pickled in hydrochloric acid (1 part 38% hydrochloric acid to 5 parts water) at 75 to 90 ° C. for 1 minute, with copper by immersion for 15 seconds in a solution containing 30 g of cuprodine salt per liter (inhibited copper sulfate ) and contained 30 ml of sulfuric acid, quickly coated and then rinsed ge.
The copper-clad nails were then placed in a 1.5 l hexagonal, plastisol-lined roller barrel system, which was then charged as follows:

After a total of 60 minutes, the barrel system was brought to a standstill and the molded bodies were separated from the impact materials and washed. Essentially all of the Zinl® had deposited on Gien nails, which had a glossy coating an average thickness of 0.055 mm. When selected samples were curved, the diameter of the curvature being about 6 mm, the coating did not flake, crack or rise until the curvature was above 170.

After this time, the system was brought to a standstill and the shaped bodies were separated from the impact medium and washed. About 90% of the metal had deposited on the nails, which had a glossy zinc coating an average thickness of 0.070 mm. If samples of these nails were bent to a radius of curvature of 6 mm in accordance with Example 1, then the coating formed scales and cracks with a bend of less than 30. The coating of the nail head of this sample nails cracked off when the nail was hammered into a softwood board.
<I> Example 3 </I> 4000 g of machine-made steel screws with a size of 10 to 32 were prepared for plating by degreasing with a strongly alkaline solution. The moldings were then rinsed and provided with a thin copper coating by immersing them in an acidified cuprodine salt solution (inhibited copper sulfate) for 30 seconds.
After rinsing, the moldings were placed in a mill that was sent as follows:

The mill was allowed to rotate for another 10 minutes. This process was repeated until 4 similar additions to d and e were added to the original charge.
After rotating for 50 minutes, essentially all of the screws were plated on their entire surface, including the thread tips and the re-entrant slots in the screw head. Exact measurements of the thickness of the coating could not be made due to the surface geometry, but the thickness of the coating was estimated to be about 0.012 mm. The zinc plating was shiny and uniform.
<I> Example 4 </I> Control experiment: 4000 g of machine-made steel screws (size 10-32) were degreased, rinsed, coated as in Example 3 and placed in the mill (roller drum system) described in Examples 1 and 2.

<tb> the <SEP> charging system <SEP> stopped. The mill was closed and operated at 54 revolutions per minute for 50 minutes. Although all of the zinc had deposited on the bolts, the coating was very uneven and inconsistent. Some screws had heavy spongy coatings on more than 90% of their surface.
Large amounts of spongy zinc had settled in the screw threads, so that they were so filled that it was impossible to screw the nuts onto a suitable screw set. With some screws, the slot on the screw head had no zinc at all, and the underside of the screw head was only about 50% coated. Other screws from the same load showed <RTI

even there the coating did not exceed 50%. With other screws of the same experiment, the results were between the extremes described here.
<I> Example 5 </I> 2700 g of conventional 6d steel wire nails were cleaned, pickled, quickly copper-plated and placed in a 4.5 l hexagonal plastisol-lined steel barrel plant as described in example 1.
