EMI0001.0035
sich in erster Linie um die Methyl- dann aber auch um die Äthylgruppe. Wenn R eine nichtionogen sub stituierte Phenylgruppe bedeutet, so kommen als Sub- stituenten vorzugsweise Halogene, wie Chlor oder Brom, niedere Alkylgruppen, wie die Methyl- oder Äthyl- gruppe;
R be deutet in erster Linie die Methylgruppe.
Beispiel 1

Process for the production of dyes of the dioxazine series The present invention relates to a process for the production of new dyes of the dioxazine series which can be used for pigmenting polymeric organic material, in particular paints and printing inks.
In Switzerland. Patent specification No. 424044 describes valuable dioxazine dyes that are obtained there by. That one is a dianil of the formula 1
EMI0001.0012
under oxazine ring-forming conditions to a dioxazine compound of the formula 1I
EMI0001.0017
In which formulas X is hydrogen, chlorine, bromine or the methyl group and R is a lower alkyl,
a cycloalkyl, aralkyl or an optionally nonionogenically substituted phenyl group.
In the further processing of this subject matter of the invention it has now been found that valuable dioxazine dyes are also obtained if a dianil of the formula III
EMI0001.0031
under oxazine ring-forming conditions to a triphenedioxazine compound of the formula IV
EMI0001.0035
in which formulas III and IV X hydrogen,
Chlorine or bromine and R is a lower alkyl group or an optionally nonionogenically substituted phenyl group.
In the triphendioxazine compounds of the formula IV which can be prepared according to the invention, X is preferably chlorine. If R is a lower alkyl group, it is.
primarily about the methyl group but then also about the ethyl group. If R is a non-ionically substituted phenyl group, the substituents are preferably halogens, such as chlorine or bromine, lower alkyl groups, such as the methyl or ethyl group;
or lower alkoxy groups such as the methoxy or ethoxy group, lower alkylsulfonyl groups, preferably the methylsulfonyl group, into consideration. R is primarily the methyl group.
Dianils of the formula 11I which can be used according to the invention and in which X is chlorine or bromine are obtained by condensation of 1 mol of chloro- or bromoanil with 2 mol of a 3-bromo-2,4-bis-alkoxy- or -phenoxy-1 -amino-benzene, which is optionally substituted non-ionically in the phenoxy radical, in the presence of an acid-binding agent such as sodium acetate or magnesium oxide.
Dianils of the formula III, in which X is hydrogen, are obtained by reacting equimolar amounts of 1,4-benzoquinone and 3-bromo-2,4-bis-alkoxy- or -phenoxy-1-aminobenzene with half reduction of the quinone used to the hydroquinone in alcohols, in particular in ethanol or isopropanol, optionally in the presence of acetic acid.
The conversion of the dianil of the formula III with ring closure to the triphendioxazine compound of the formula IV is conveniently carried out by heating the dianil to above 150 ° C., in particular to 200 to 220 ° C., preferably in inert, high-boiling organic solvents and optionally in the presence of an acidic condensing agent.
Suitable inert, high-boiling organic solvents are, for example, optionally halogenated and / or nitrated aromatic hydrocarbons of the benzene series, such as di- or trichlorobenzene or nitrobenzene, or of the naphthalene series, such as naphthalene or α-chloro or α-methylnaphthalene, or alcohols, like benzyl alcohol or ethylene glycol,
or ether, e.g. B. polyalkylene glycol mono- or di-alkyl ethers, such as diethylene glycol mono-methyl, -di-methyl- or -mono ethyl or -di-ethyl ether, or esters, for example benzoates or phthalates of alkanols such as ethyl - or butyl = benzoate or diethyl or dibutyd phthalate.
Examples of acidic condensing agents are, in particular, the acid halides of carboxylic or sulfonic acids, such as benzoyl chloride or benzylsulfonic acid chloride, but also thionyl chloride, phosphorus pentachloride, sulfuric acid, hydrogen chloride, hydrogen bromide or metal chlorides such as aluminum chloride or zinc chloride.
It is also possible to carry out the synthesis of the dianil of the formula III and its conversion with ring closure to give the triphendioxazine compound of the formula IV in one operation without the dianil having to be isolated.
The pure triphendioxazine compounds of the formula IV obtainable by the process according to the invention show the characteristic properties of the dioxazine dyes, for example the blue color of the solution in concentrated sulfuric acid, metallic luster of the crystals and fluorescence in 1,2-dichlorobenzene.
For use as pigments, these triphendioxazine compounds are brought into a finely dispersed form, for example by precipitating them from a sulfuric acid solution with water. The fine division is more advantageous by grinding or kneading the raw products in the presence of grinding aids, such as inorganic or organic salts, which can be removed again by solvents, and optionally additional grinding aids, such as organic solvents, acids or bases.
This preparation results in finely dispersed color pigments with a soft texture and remarkable color strength, sometimes with a good purity of color. They can be used for pigmenting polymeric organic materials, especially varnishes, rubber, lacquers, for example stoving or nitro lacquers, and plastics such as polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene or polypropylene.
They are also particularly suitable for the production of printing inks for paper printing and for dyeing viscose and cellulose materials in bulk. The red and red-brown dyeings and prints produced with them are distinguished by a high color strength and good fastness to solvents, varnishes, rubs and light, and good heat resistance. .
Triphendioxazine compounds of the formula IV, in which R denotes the methyl group, are particularly suitable for the production of printing inks; they have a bright bluish red hue.
Further details can be found in the following examples. The temperatures are given in degrees Celsius. Example 1

The 2,4-dichloro-3-bromo-l-nitro-benzene is obtained from 2,6-dichloroaniline by replacing the amino group with bromine according to Sandmeyer and then nitrating.
A bluish-tinged red pigment with similarly good properties is obtained if instead of 31.85 g of 3,6-dichloro-2,5-bis (2 ', 4'-dimethoxy-3'-bromophenylamino) -1,4 -benzoquinone 36.3 g 3,6-dibromo-2,5- bis - (2 ', 4'-dimethoxy-3' = bromophenylamino) -1,4 - benzoquinone used,

The residue is filtered off cold and washed with ethanol and acetone. For purification, it is extracted with 2-chloronaphthalene on a Soxhlet.
After grinding with calcium chloride, a red powder is obtained from which printing inks can be produced which produce red, strong prints.
The 1,4-benzoquinone derivative used as starting material is produced by condensation of 1 mole of 1,4-benzoquinone with 1 mole of 2,4-dimethoxy-3-bromo-aniline in a mixture of ethanol and glacial acetic acid.
