Electromechanical timepiece
The present invention relates to an electromechanical timepiece comprising a mechanical resonator, the oscillations of which are electronically maintained, actuating a counting device transforming the oscillating movements of the resonator into rotary movements of a so-called counting wheel,
Timepieces of the aforementioned type are known, in particular parts in which the resonator is a tuning fork actuating, by a pawl, a ratchet wheel constituting the counting wheel.
The drawback of such devices lies in the fact that they are sensitive to the echo, the latter being able to cause the said pawl to jump on several teeth of the c) counting wheel which, of course, distorts the counting,
We proposed. to remedy this drawback. to provide such devices with two drive pawls. at the rate of one per flexible branch. working alternately, each for a half-oscillation of the resonator. the fixed retaining pawl then being removed.
However. this solution has serious drawbacks during start-up. settings. dressings and controls of the room. In fact, when the counting wheel is retained by a fixed pawl, it suffices to act on the latter to move it slightly to easily determine the position in which the counting wheel's retraction is such that the assembly works harmoniously. , smoothly.
If the counting wheel is subjected to the action of two drive pawls without a fixed retaining pawl, such setting is not possible and the adjustment must be made by acting on one or the other oscillating pawls. which is most delicate.
The aim of the present invention is to provide a timepiece the operation of which is practically insensitive to accelerations, that is to say to the effects of shocks. and which does not however have the aforementioned drawbacks.
In addition. in the present timepiece, the resonator is formed by a bending symmetrical oscillator, having a U-shaped part, the two branches of which participate in the bending. like a tuning fork. and two rigid arms, able to compensate for the position error. each connected to one of said flexible branches, in the vicinity of the free end thereof.
There is no such provision. which is the subject of the Swiss patent
N 451021, to the noni of the applicant, presents the advantage that the resonator is practically insensitive to the effects of position, that is to say to the changes in frequency caused. under the effect of gravity. changes in the position of the resonator.
So. the invention provides a timepiece whose rate is insensitive both to the effects of position. by the very construction of the resonator provided with rigid compensation arms, and to the choes.
This timepiece is characterized by the fact that the counting device is attached to the resonator at a point of at least one of the rigid arms of the latter. which is driven by a vibrating oscillating movement, under the effect of the vibrations of the flexible branch with which this rigid arm is associated. all in such a way that said counting device is practically insensitive to accelerations, in particular due to shocks, to which the part is subjected.
The drawing represents. for exemple. an embodiment of the object of the invention.
Fig. I is a plan view of a shot of a timepiece in which only the components necessary for understanding the invention have been shown
fig. 2 is an elevational view of a detail of FIG. 1, and
figs. 3 to 8 illustrate the principle on which the invention is based.
Fig. 1 shows a mechanical resonator comprising two branches formed by resilient flexible blades 1 connected by a middle part the integral part of a tongue 1b which is fixed at 2 to the frame of the timepiece. The tongue 1b is connected to the middle part 1a by an elastic part 1c the aim of which is to eliminate any parasitic vibration mode at the frequency of the desired mode, in which the two flexible blades 1 vibrate in phase opposition. These blades 1 carry, at their free end, an electrodynamic transducer 3 serving to maintain the oscillations of the resonator. The maintenance device being foreign to the present invention. it will not be described here.
Each of the flexible blades 1 carries, fixed at its free end, a rigid arm 4, vibrating with the blade to which it is associated, and which is itself provided, at its free end, with a balancing mass or counterweight 5. As shown in fig. 2, the blades 1 and the arms 4 are located in two different planes, in order to reduce the size of the resonator surface.
It should be noted that the transducers 3 could be placed at the location of the balancing masses 5, that is to say at the free ends of the rigid arms 4. In this case, the elastic blades 1 would bear, at their end free, balancing masses. Similarly, we could have four transducers placed at the free ends of the elastic blades and the rigid arms, and which would balance each other.
One of the rigid arms 4 carries, fixed to it at 6, a @liquet formed by an elastic blade 7 provided with a bee 8 engaged with the teeth of a ratchet 9 constituting a counting wheel. This is driven step by step, in the direction of arrow 10, during the oscillations of the resonator, and is retained by a fixed ratchet, formed of an elastic blade 11 carrying a spout 12, fixed at 13 to the frame. movement. The bees 8 and 12 could be made in ruby, for example. The counting wheel 9 transmits its movement to the indicator members of the watch by means of a gear train, not shown.
Thanks to the fact that the elastic blade 7 of the drive pawl is fixed to the rigid arm 4 of the resonator, and not to the flexible branch 1 of the latter, and moreover at a particular point of this rigid arm, the operation of the resonator part is not affected by acceleration, particularly due to shocks, to which the part may be subjected.
This particularity is explained as follows
The resonator can be shown schematically in the manner shown in FIG. 3, in which the same reference signs as in FIGS. 1 and 2.
We therefore find in this figure. a mechanical resonator formed of two elastic blades 1, embedded at one end and free at the other, and two rigid masses 4, each rigidly linked to the free end of one of the elastic blades 1.
One can easily imagine that, when such a resonator vibrates, the parts 4 revolve around a point C, (fig. 4), which constitutes a node of vibration, and which can be called the instantaneous center of oscillation.
If this set is subjected to accelerations, whatever they may be, the resonator is deformed: it is possible to determine. on the branches or rigid masses 4, an immobile point C @ (fig. 4) around which each of them turns, and which may be called the instantaneous center of deformation.
The effects of normal vibration and shock displacement, applied to a single blade, have been shown in fig. 4.
So that the device, applied to the drive of the indicator members of a timepiece by means of a counting device, can function in the desired way, that is to say be insensitive to the effects s, it is necessary that the point of attachment of the counting device to the resonator is placed on the center of deformation C4 and, moreover, that the center of oscillation C @ does not coincide with the center C @.
Indeed, if the attachment point 6 of the counting device coincides with the center of deformation C @. it is obvious that this device will not be influenced by shocks. However, in order for the mechanism to work, i.e. the counting wheel to be driven by the resonator during normal vibration thereof, the counting device must not be attached to the resonator in one. point coinciding with the center of oscillation C @ of the latter. Hence the condition indicated above that said centers of oscillation and deformation do not coincide. This condition can be fulfilled by a judicious choice of the shape and the size of the rigid masses 4, in correlation with the characteristics of the elastic part of the resonator.
It should be noted that the above condition remains compatible with the requirements which the resonator must satisfy so that its frequency is independent of its position in the field of gravity.
It should be shown that the centers of oscillation and deformation do not coincide. For this purpose, these centers will be calculated below, in these calculations, only one half of the resonator is considered, the latter being symmetrical and its central part having no effect on the calculations, as will be explained below.
1. Calculation of the center of oscillation C, namely calculation of the distance @@ between this center and the free end of the resonator @
As shown in fig. 5.each rigid mass 4 can be broken down into elementary weights P @ applied
at the centers of gravity of elementary surface elements and separated from the free end of the flexible blade @ by a distance x @.
All this system of forces can be reduced to the resulting dvname applied at x 0, i.e. @ M @ P @ x @ @ P @ x @ @ P @ x @ @ @ P @ x @

EMI2.2
By applying the RAYLEIGH method, which poses
as the assumption that the static deformation is equal to the dynamic deformation, it is possible to calculate the elastic line of the blade 1 by the general formula island bending:
d-N M (x)
dx2 EJ where
F blade 1 YOUNG modulus;
J moment of inertia of blade 1; M (x) t NI ,, I Px (in the particular case).
By a double integration, and by posing that for
dx x 1 (fig. 6), y - 0 and 0, it is possible to cal
dx culate the function y - f (x).
The caletîl of the center of oscillation (',, amounts to calculating the distance @@ which can therefore be expressed by

The calculation leads to
EMI3.2
2. Calculation of the center of deformation C @, namely calculation of the distance r @ between this center and the free end of the resonator:
Given that the initial acceleration applied to the assembly is a G, the effect of this acceleration is that illustrated in fig. 7.
As in the previous case, the system of forces represented can be reduced to the resulting dyname applied at x @ 0, that is: M '@ P1x1 - P2x2 @ P @ @ x @ @ @ Pnxn
EMI3.3
EMI3.4
The calculations to determine the center of deformation C @, namely the distance r @ (fig. 8) are in all points identical to the preceding calculations, with the only difference that M is different from M ,,. dii causes the forces on the left along the islands y axis. in fig. 7. held changed sign.
So. by r a judicious choice of the parameters intervening in the formulas, it is possible to make it so that r ,, # r, 1 el that. therefore, (does not coincide with
3. Notes on calculations
The above calculations assume that the amplitude of the vibrations is very small compared to the length of the vibrating part of the resonator. which is practically always the case.
It was also not taken into account the elasticity of the middle part le, the latter being able to be considered as being néeliecable vis-à-vis the elasticity of the flexible branches 1. Moreover. it suffices that this elastic part is placed, by construction, at the level of the center of deformation C @. measured in the direction of the ordinates. so that the effect of this elastic part on the position of the strain center is zero. which amounts to saying that it is justified not to include this elastic part in the calculations.
4. Practical example @
In the case where 1 0.91 cm and M @ in the
vibration 515 dynes @ cm and M '. shock = @ 229 dynes @ cm. the calculation leads to r @ = 0.5 cm and r @ =
1.0 cm.
So. r ,, and r, 1 do not coincide. so that. in vibration regime. the amplitude in C @ is not zero, and it ticks the position of C @ relative to a fixed point of the frame remains unchanged. whatever the magnitude and direction of the accelerations to which the assembly may be subjected.
