Transport device for a system for anodic oxidation of metal objects
The invention relates to a transport device for a system for anodic oxidation of Metallge objects, for example made of aluminum. A method of anodic oxidation generally consists in that the surface of a metal is oxidized by immersing the metal connected to a positive voltage source in an acidic electrolyte, for example sulfuric acid.
In the previously used methods of anodic oxidation, the objects to be treated are generally placed in metal baskets or racks made of metal which are carried by a conveyor.
The conveyor moves the baskets or racks containing the items one by one over an open-topped tank containing the electrolyte, whereupon the baskets or racks are lowered into the tank for the required period of time, after which the basket is raised and then brought to further tanks which contain various chemicals for rinsing, coloring and / or sealing the anodized surfaces of the articles. The baskets or racks that carry the items to be anodized must be connected to the positive terminal of a DC voltage source so that the items to be anodized will have a positive voltage as a result of their contact with the baskets or racks.
In general, the equipment used to anodize articles is similar to that generally used to electroplate articles. In the electroplating process, the objects to be plated are connected to the negative terminal of a DC voltage source and the metal is deposited on all negatively charged metal surfaces within the electrolyte by means of a reduction process.
In such a case, e.g. B. the basket or rack which carry the items are plated together with the items. It is therefore generally not practical in an electroplating apparatus to immerse the conveyor carrying the baskets or racks in the electrolyte, although this immersion is suggested from time to time. It may not have become apparent to the designers of anodic treatment equipment that immersing the conveyor in the electrolyte has important advantages without the accompanying disadvantages, since in anodic treatment, unlike electroplating, not all of the submerged metal surfaces have the same charge as the objects to be anodically treated are affected.
For example, titanium and zirconium are not anodized or corroded when immersed in an electrolyte for anodizing aluminum such as sulfuric acid with a positive voltage applied.
The type of devices heretofore used for conveying articles to be anodized to open-topped tanks containing the electrolyte has various disadvantages.
First and foremost, the conveyor device and the control elements for them, which cause an intermittent longitudinal movement and then an up and down movement of the baskets, require frequent replacement. Furthermore, with such a device, for the reasons explained below, a uniform surface condition is often not obtained, especially when it comes to uninterrupted cup-shaped or bowl-shaped objects that are reversed in the racks or baskets.
The invention is based on a transport device of an anodic oxidation system which contains a tank device in which the electrolyte is located.
The objects to be treated are transported from the top of the tank into and out of the electrolyte located in the tank device. The transport device has an endless, electrically conductive transport member and holding elements distributed along it for the releasable holding of the objects to be anodized. A guide device is arranged inside and outside of the rolling device, which continuously moves the endless transport element along a predetermined, uninterrupted path for long movement.
The invention consists in that the endless transport member is made of litan or zirconium, which is insensitive to the electrolyte and not anouisable therein, that the holding elements have organs for holding the objects to be anodized again, that the uninterrupted path is corrugated and on a The object feed station before entering the tank facility and an object removal station after leaving the tank facility, that drive means for continuously driving the transport element along this path, a DC voltage source with positive and negative terminals and connecting elements for connecting the positive terminal of the DC voltage source to the objects to be anodized the endless,
conductive transport element are present and that the connection elements have a number of current conductors which are physically in contact with the endless transport element at a number of longitudinally separated points on the path of movement between the entry point of the endless transport element into the tank device and its exit point from the tank device in order to To supply power at a number of different locations between said entry and exit points.
It is particularly expedient if the transport member is designed as a belt provided with longitudinally spaced, laterally separated pairs of slots and if the holding elements are supported by elastic sheet metal strips which have projections at their ends that engage in a pair of slots and are bent by bending the Strips along a transverse axis for shortening the same can be removed therefrom.
According to an expedient embodiment of the device, the uninterrupted path between the entry and exit points into and out of the tank device is steeply corrugated, so that the path leads into the electrolyte several times and leaves it again shortly thereafter. The current conductors expediently establish physical contact with the conveyor belt at the points at which the conveyor belt leaves the electrolyte in the tank device.
The current conductors expediently act as parts of the guide device. The conveyor belt is expediently provided with holding elements which are distributed over the width and length of the conveyor belt.
The guide device, which is immersed in the electrolyte, consists in particular of a material which does not anodize or corrode in the electrolyte in the electrically neutral state. In particular, it is isolated from the DC voltage source.
The tank device can consist of one or more individual tanks. It is expedient here for the conveyor belt to be supported and guided by a support and guide device which, as a structural unit, can be raised and lowered in each tank and is isolated from the tank.
Further advantageous embodiments relate to the manner in which the objects are attached to the belt conveyor and automatically removed from it. For example, the articles are preferably carried by resilient metal clips attached to carrier strips or bars which can be easily removed from the belt. The device is therefore applicable to various objects for which purpose it is only necessary to remove one set of carrier strips and use in its place another set of clamps of a different size or shape. Other advantageous designs relate to the design of frames provided with rollers which guide the conveyor belt as it moves into and out of the various tanks.

The device for anodic oxidation or anodizing device shown in FIG. 1 has a series of tanks open at the top, into which aluminum objects 1 to be anodized shown in FIG. 3 are successively brought by a novel conveyor 2 described in more detail below. The first tank 4, into which the objects are brought from a loading station 3, contains a suitable non-caustic material for cleaning aluminum, for example a silicate-free cleaning agent, which is sold under the name Redi Aluminum Cleaner No. 1 by the Redi Chemical Co. of Barrington, Illinois, USA. The objects are then fed to a water rinsing tank 5 in which the cleaning material is rinsed away.
The objects are then placed in two anodizing tanks 6 and 6a which contain a sulfuric acid solution, the level of which in tanks 6 and 6a is indicated by reference number 7. The conveyor system is isolated from the anodizing tanks 6 and 6a and connected to the positive terminal of a DC voltage source.
The tanks 6 and 6a are connected to the negative terminal of the voltage source. The objects are then conveyed to a water-filled washing tank 8 and then to a tank 10 which contains a sealing material, for example a solution of nickel lacctate, whereby the pores of the oxide coating obtained by the anodizing treatment are sealed in a manner known per se. After sealing, all objects 1 are fed to a drying tank 12, which can be a tank known per se, which heat sources, e.g. B. gas burner, contains to dry the objects. After emerging from the tank, the objects are fed to a discharge station 14 at which the objects are automatically discharged in the manner described below.
Optionally, additional treatment tanks can be added to the device shown for performing additional processing such as dyeing and the like. The various stages of the anodizing process described above are only mentioned as examples.
As mentioned, it was common in anodizing equipment to use a rather complex conveyor system in which the items were carried by racks or baskets which were first moved longitudinally to a position above a given tank and then lowered into a tank in which the racks or baskets remain stationary for a given period of time, whereupon the baskets or racks are lifted out of the tank and then: moved longitudinally over the next tank. The conveying element 2 is an endless belt 20 made of titanium or zirconium sheet, which is robust and which is not corroded or anodically oxidized by any of the liquid substances in the tanks 4, 5, 6, 6a, 8 and 10.
The belt 20 is moved continuously through the various tanks in a steeply undulating path. In particular, in the anodizing tanks 6 and 6a, the steeply corrugated path is formed by a number of long vertical sections which are connected by short horizontally curved sections for reversing the direction of movement of the belt. A number of important advantages are achieved by such an arrangement. First and foremost, a relatively long immersion treatment can be carried out with continuous movement of the belt 20 with small longitudinal dimensions of the tanks, so that the tanks take up the least possible floor space.
In the described method for anodic oxidation of aluminum, as can be seen, the entire vertical length of the track in the tanks 6 and
6a quite considerable in relation to the length of the
Tanks. Second, as can be seen when the objects to be anodized in the reverse position on the
Liquid that has accumulated in the objects as they move through the electrolyte is poured back into the tank when the tape moves out of the tank.
Furthermore, as the objects are transferred to a new vertical path their
Change position, if any gas pockets present in the objects are moved around considerably, so that they usually escape from the objects and therefore the electrolyte can come into contact with all inner and outer surfaces of the objects.
4, 7 and 9 show, the endless sheet metal strip 20 is provided with longitudinally spaced pairs of laterally spaced apart slots 25, 25 which are distributed over the full length of the strip. Each pair of slots 25, 25 forms means for the elastic and detachable arrangement of a narrow, elongated, flexible and elastic carrier strip or a carrier rail 29. Each of the strips is provided at its ends with stepped lugs 31, 31 which are inserted into two of the slots 25 , 25 seated. The carrier strips 29 can be removed from the tape in a simple manner by pulling them out of the slots, their flexibility enabling them to be bent and shortened about a transverse axis.
The carrier strips 29 carry a number of spring metal holders 33 which are spaced apart from one another and which carry the cup-shaped objects 1 in a detachable manner. Each holder 33 has two pairs of upwardly and outwardly extending fingers 33a, 33a, each of which has an inwardly curved outer end 33B. The fingers have a somewhat larger distance than the size of the opening of the objects 1 from one another. The inverted cup-shaped objects 1 can therefore easily be placed on the mounts by inverting them and pushing them down over the rounded ends of the mounts, thereby pressing the fingers inward so that the objects telescopically sit on and on the mount be kept safe.
As mentioned, the use of carrier strips 29, which can easily be removed from the belt 20, enables holders of different sizes to be easily arranged on the belt 20 for receiving objects of different sizes and shapes.
The carrier strips 29 are attached to the outside of the tape 20 so that they are on top of the upper portion 20a of the tape and on the underside of the lower portion 20b of the tape.
The lower portion 20b of the belt rests on top of freely rotatable rollers 37 which are carried by the vertical webs 39a, 39a of double T-beams 39, 39 which form a supporting substructure for the entire device. The upper flanges 39b, 39b of the double T-beams 39, 39 carry the various tanks 4, 5, 6, 6a, 8, 10 and 12 as well as other parts of the device described in more detail below. The anodizing tanks 6, 6a are preferably isolated from the flanges of the double-T-beams by insulating layers 41 (FIG. 3) which are arranged under the tanks.
As can best be seen from Fig. 3, each of the anodizing tanks 6 and 6a has a terminal 42 to which a line 43 is connected which leads to the negative terminal of a suitable direct voltage source, not shown, the voltage of which is, for example, about 20-30 volts amounts.
The lower portion 20b of the belt 20 extends upwardly around end-capped cylindrical lower drive rollers 45,45 to the upper portion 20a of the belt on upper drive end rollers 45,45. The upper and lower drive end rollers 45 are between pairs of vertical frame sidewalls 47 and 48 which are supported in a suitable manner by the double T-brackets 39,39.
Each Antnebsrolle 45 is driven by a common, endless chain 49 which is placed over a sprocket 50 which is attached to a shaft 51 of the collector. The lower section of the chain 49b of the chain 49 runs below the upper flange of one of the double-part bearings 39, where it engages with and is guided by sprockets 50 'which are rotatably mounted on the web 39a of the double-side carrier are (Fig. 3).
The upper portion 20a of the endless belt 20 runs around a series of similar drive rollers 45 above and adjacent the ends of the various tanks and below various guide rollers 52 and, in the case of the anodizing tanks, around contact rollers 52 'which, in a manner described below, within the various Tanks are stored. The last-mentioned drive rollers 45 are provided with similar chain wheels S0, which are driven by the chain 49. At the discharge station 14, the belt 20 runs straight down between the upper and lower drive rollers 45, while the chain 49 is guided around adjustable chain wheels 53.
A second sprocket 50 "is attached to the upper final drive roller 45 at the discharge station, over which a chain 54 is laid which is attached by a drive sprocket 55 which is arranged on a shaft 56 which carries another sprocket 57 around one Chain 58. The chain 58 is driven by a chain tube 60 which is mounted on the shaft of a motor unit 62. The motor unit 62 is arranged on a base 64 which is supported by the upper flanges 39b of the double-T-beams 39,39 will be carried.
The various guide rollers 52 in the various tanks form part of belt supports and guide assemblies 72, 74, 76, 78, 80 and 82 which are suspended in tanks 4, 5, 6, 6a, 8, 10 or 12. A description will now be given of the tape support and guide assembly 76 associated with each anodizing tank 6 and 6a, but it should be noted that the other assemblies are similar in structure. Corresponding elements of these arrangements are provided with corresponding reference numbers.
The tape carrier and guide assembly 76 associated with each of the tanks 6 and 6a has two vertical support plates 84 and 84 which extend down into the associated tanks but spaced apart therefrom, as best shown in FIG. The plates are rigidly connected to one another by a spacer sleeve and rod arrangement 85 anchored to them.
Between the lower parts of the plates 84, 84 three longitudinally spaced guide rollers 52 are mounted, of which at least the belt contact surfaces are covered with a suitable layer 86 (FIG. 3) made of an insulating material such as Teflon, which is covered by the electrolyte is not affected and isolates the rollers against the tension on the belt, each of the guide rollers 52 having an axle 88 which is rotatably mounted in suitable bearings 90, 90 which are attached to the support plates 84, 84. At the end portions of the axle 88, two transverse end walls 91, 91 are attached.
The end walls are provided with facing, axial and inwardly extending flanges 92, 92 which together with the protruding ends of the end wall form guides for the upper portion 20a of the belt running around the lower parts of the guide rollers. The aforementioned insulating layer 86 is applied at least to the surfaces of these guides.
The plates 84, 84 serve for the rotatable mounting of two upper cylindrical contact rollers 52 ', which are preferably arranged above the level of the associated tank 6 or 6a at points between the guide rollers 52. The upper portion 20a of the tape is therefore looped around the bottom of each of the guide rollers 52 and around the top of the contact rollers 52 '(the contact rollers 52' are replaced by guide rollers 52 in the tape support and guide assemblies of tanks 10 and 12).
Each of the contact rollers 52 ′ has a cylindrical metallic outer wall 102 which forms good electrical contact with the band 20 running around it over essentially the full length of the outer wall 102. The contact roller 52 'has metallic end walls 104 which are formed with metallic hubs 106 which are electrically and mechanically connected to an axle 108 which is supported in suitable bearings 110 which are fastened to the support plates 84, 84 by screws 111. The positive terminal of the aforementioned DC voltage source is connected to the ends of the axle 108 of each of the contact rollers 52 'by two brushes 112, 112 which slide on the rotating ends of the axle 108. The brushes 112 are carried by suitable bus bars 114 which are connected by suitable conductors to the aforementioned positive terminal.
The bearings 110 and the axle 108 are preferably isolated from the screws 111 and the support plates by a suitably arranged insulation 115 so that there is no tension on the support plates and on the guide rollers 52 mounted by them.
All parts of the tape carrier and guide assembly 76 which come into contact with the electrolyte are preferably made of corrosion-resistant steel (the corrosion-resistant steel would be attacked by the electrolyte if the positive voltage was applied to it on the tape 20, which is why the Insulating layer 86 is necessary). The cylindrical outer wall 112 of each of the contact rollers 52 ', which comes into contact with the wetted belt 20, is also made of corrosion-resistant steel.
The axle 108 and end walls 104 of each of the contact rollers 52 are not made of stainless steel, as shown, so to prevent acid dripping damage to these parts of the rollers, a suitable coating 116 of rubber is applied to the exposed surface of the end walls 104, is applied to the associated hubs 106 and to the adjacent parts of the axle 108.
Each of the support plates 84 has two laterally extending wings 84a, 84a at their upper outer ends, which are anchored by bolts and nuts or the like. To a vertical flange 120 of two receiving units 122 which are arranged at the opposite ends of the respective tank (there is a receiving unit 122 anchored at each end of the various tanks 4, 5, 6, 6a, 8, 10 and 12). As can be seen, by unscrewing the support plates 84, 84 of each tape support and guide assembly, the entire assembly can be removed as a unit from the respective tank.
This feature is advantageous for maintaining the device and for eliminating jamming that can occur within the tanks.
Each receiving unit, with the exception of those at the outer ends of the end tanks 4 and 12, is arranged on a vertical support 124 having a foot 126 which is suitably secured to the upper flange 39b of one of the double T-beams 39, isolated therefrom is.
The outermost pairs of the receiving units 122 are arranged on the aligned vertical frame plates 47 and 48. Each receiving unit has a vertical bearing-bearing slide 125 which, in the embodiment of the invention shown, is provided with spaced apart, vertical lateral U-profiles 128, 128 (FIG. 6), which are slidably spaced apart vertical guide edges 130, 130 grip around the receiving unit. A threaded spindle 132, which is guided through an upper wall 133 of the receiving unit, is anchored on the slide 125.
A nut 135 is screwed onto the end of the threaded spindle 132 protruding beyond the upper wall 133, so that the threaded spindle and the slider 125 attached to it can be raised and lowered by turning the nut 135. Each slide 125 is provided with a bearing 139 for supporting one end of the shaft 51 of a drive roller 45 or the axle 108 of a contact roller 52 '(all receiving units with the exception of those at the left end of the tank 6 are mounted on drive rollers). By changing the height of the slider 125 and the drive or contact roller supported by it, the tension of the belt 20 can be easily changed.
In Fig. 4, the design of the drive rollers 45 is shown in greater detail. Each drive roller 45 has a cylindrical outer wall 149 which carries a rubber sleeve 150 which makes good frictional contact with the belt 20, and end walls 151, 151 which are formed with hubs 152, 152 which are mounted on the shaft 51. A chain wheel 50 is also seated on one end of the shaft 51.
As mentioned, means for automatically stripping off the objects carried by the holders 33 are provided at the discharge station 14. These means are formed by a number of pairs of stripping fingers 156, 156. The stripper fingers 156 are carried by brackets 158 (see FIGS. 7 and 8) which sit on a rod assembly 159 which is anchored to the vertical frame plates 48,48. The stripper fingers 156 extend to a point adjacent the top of the drive end roller 45 and are inclined at a substantial angle so that they extend downwardly and outwardly from the drive roller.
The stripping fingers 156, 156 of each pair are spaced from one another and are arranged so that one of the rows of brackets 33 can pass therebetween as the belt about the last-mentioned drive roller makes its way downward.
The distance between the stripping fingers of each pair, however, is less than the total width of the objects arranged on the holders 33. Thus, as the belt passes down around the drive end roller 45 and the brackets 33 move under the stripper fingers 156, 156, the articles are stripped from the brackets. Two hold-down rods 157, 157 extend over the drive roller 45 and closely adjacent thereto in order to hold down the carrier strips 29 when the objects are stripped from the holders 33. The stripped objects slide by their own weight down the inclined upper sides of the stripping fingers until they finally slide off of these into a suitable container or conveyor, not shown.
From the above exemplary description of the transport device ei it can be seen that a very simple, reliable and effective device for conveying objects to be anodized into and out of the various open tanks has been created. In addition, as a result of the steeply corrugated belts of the belt within the liquid of the various tanks, a maximum web length is achieved in each of the tanks with the smallest possible anchor size.
In addition, the course of the conveyor in the anodizing tank prevents the accumulation of gas pockets, which can cause uneven anodizing of uninterrupted, cup-shaped objects. In addition, the advantage is achieved that, since the cup-shaped objects are held in an inverted position on the outside of the belt, all liquid is automatically drained from the objects when the belt curves into a horizontal position when leaving each tank. Furthermore, the design of the tape carrier and guide arrangements is such that the entire system can be easily assembled and disassembled for maintenance and for the elimination of jams and the like.
The invention is not limited to the preferred embodiment described above and shown, but can instead experience various modifications within its scope.
