Beispiele geeigne ter organischer Flüssigkeiten sind u. a. Hexan.

Adhesive packaged in aerosol spray containers The invention relates to an adhesive packaged in aerosol spray containers with a solids content of at least 10% by weight.
There is considerable demand for adhesives packaged in aerosol cans, with which high-strength adhesive bonds can be achieved and which can be sprayed onto materials such as paper, cardboard, cloth or plastic foams. Up to now, adhesives of this type, with which good shear strength and peel strength could be achieved, contained less than about 5% by weight of elastomeric substances.
The low solids content with which such adhesives are packaged in the usual way means not only a waste of solvents and propellants, but also leads to a spray that is too thin, so that the volatile substances get into the porous base materials on which the Adhesive is sprayed on, penetrate. As a result, backing materials such as paper will be shown through by the volatile liquids, and other sensitive materials will be otherwise damaged by the solvents.
In order to produce aerosol adhesives with an appropriately high solids content, attempts have often been made to add an inert solid filler. However, adhesives that contain such fillers do not provide adhesive bonds with the desired high strength. When an attempt was made to add elastomeric substances to the adhesives, it was found that the aerosol adhesive became a rubber-like mass and the mass was released from the aerosol spray container in rubber-like threads instead of as a useful spray jet.
It has also been found that the elastomeric substances within the container gelled to a semi-solid mass or irreversibly separated into two or more phases, making the material unsprayable.
Heavily crosslinked or gelled elastomers have been known for some time; cf. For example, USA patent specification No. 2,673,845. A few years earlier, USA patent specification No. 2,537,982 described self-adhesive adhesives that were made of elastomers, such as e.g. B. copolymers of butadiene and acrylonitrile, ent held.
In the US patent mentioned, it is assumed that rubber-like butadiene-acrylonitrile polymers had previously been vulcanized in adhesive compositions, and the difficulties and problems that exist here are discussed. A few years later, Canadian Patent No. 586,489 described cement compositions containing highly crosslinked elastomers for general spraying purposes. However, none of the above-mentioned patents addresses the specific problems of creating adhesives based on elastomers, which one high solids content (such as
above about 10%), in aerosol spray cans that can be stored and sprayed for long periods of time without pulling threads or delivering web-like structures or - at the other extreme - giving rise to excessive mist formation. As far as is known, an adhesive packaged in aerosol spray cans on an elastomer base, which provides adhesive connections with high strength, has not been proposed anywhere.
According to the invention, the disadvantages of the known adhesives are overcome by proposing an elastomeric adhesive packaged in aerosol spray cans which has a solids content of at least 10% by weight of the container contents. The solids content of the adhesives according to the invention contains a substantial amount of dispersed, insoluble elastomeric substance, generally in an amount of 5-25% by weight of the contents of the container.
The adhesive compositions according to the invention remain sprayable over a longer period of time, namely of many months or years, and need to be shaken very slightly in order to redisperse the ingredients. It has been found that the desired results are achieved if the rubber-like polymer is incorporated in the form of small, insoluble particles. These particles should preferably be at least large enough to represent discrete, insoluble (albeit swollen) particles of colloidal size in the carrier liquid.
The particles can also be larger and either remain suspended in the carrier liquid for a considerable period of time after the ingredients have been mixed, or they can be redispersible and in this state for minutes or hours after the movement, such as. B. by shaking by hand remain. The preferred embodiments of the adhesives according to the invention contain a balanced proportion or range of amounts of such insoluble particles in combination with a tackifying resin and / or an elastomer which is soluble in the carrier liquid.
These soluble constituents are preferably contained in an amount of at least 5% of the total solids, taking into account the final properties desired in the adhesive film. If the adhesive mass contains too high a proportion of the larger, dispersible insoluble particles "the mass is sprayed in the form of an unusable, too fine mist or, in some cases, quickly settles on the bottom of the container.
On the other hand, if too many of the smaller colloidal and / or soluble elastomeric particles are present, the mass is sprayed in the form of rubber-like threads.
According to the invention, a spray adhesive based on elastomer in an aerosol spray container mixed with a volatile organic carrier liquid and a propellant is proposed, the liquid containing at least 10 wt% of the following solids:
a tackifying resin and / or an elastomer, which are dissolved in the carrier liquid, and an elastomeric material in the form of insoluble particles, which range in size from constantly dispersed particles of colloidal size to larger particles,
which remain dispersible in the carrier liquid after a slight agitation of the liquid for at least several minutes. The proportions can be selected so that the aerosol spray container content is sprayed through an opening when discharged from the container, without forming more than minor amounts of non-adherent, excessively fine mist and without pulling rubber-like threads.
The most varied types of aerosol spray containers, as known to those skilled in the art, can be used for the spray adhesives. Ordinary tin-plated cans are generally sufficient; However, if the adhesive composition contains ingredients that can react with the metal of the container, the inner surface of the container should be coated with a resistant polymeric coating, such as. B. with a vinyl polymer or an .Epoxy resin, are provided in order to eliminate as much as possible any adverse interaction between the adhesive mass and the container.
The aerosol spray containers used are preferably those in which the propellant is in liquefied form and is mixed with the adhesive mass. When the flow of adhesive and liquefied propellant emerges from the opening in the nozzle of the aerosol spray container, virtually instantaneous evaporation of the propellant occurs, breaking the flow into airborne particles of the desired size.
The pressure applied is generally between 1.7 and 4.3 atmospheres, depending on the strength of the Behäl age and the desired spray pattern. About 2.5 atm is generally preferred.
In connection with the inventive spray adhesives, the usual, convertible by pressure into the liquid state, normally gaseous propellants, such as. B. propane, carbon dioxide and commercially available freon can be used. The propellant is in liquefied form in the container; in this form it will. usually also introduced into the container.
Since the propellant is generally mixed with the adhesive mass, the propellant should have the property of not reacting with the packaged adhesive in such a way that the adhesive properties are adversely affected. In such cases, the liquefied propellant becomes part of the solvent system present in the container; and some components of propellant systems, such as. B.
Methylene chloride, which is commonly used as a vapor pressure reducing agent for liquefied propellants, also has a solvating effect on the substances dissolved and suspended in the liquid in the container. This can be very beneficial in some cases.
The main components of the adhesive masses according to the invention are a rubber-like, elastomeric mass and a carrier liquid for this, in which the elastomer is practically insoluble. It is often desirable to add substantial amounts of tackifying resins in order to improve the adhesive properties of the composition, as well as optionally add small amounts of viscosity stabilizers and antioxidants and the like.
The solvent or the carrier liquid is generally selected taking into account the requirements of the end use, the solvent properties and the compatibility of the solvent with the adhesive components. Examples of suitable organic liquids are u. a. Hexane. Methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, and the various alcohols.
The solvent properties of the liquid should be such that the elastomeric composition is dispersible in it, while the resinous constituents and the stabilizers, if any, are soluble in it.
A large number of the most varied of elastomeric substances can be used. The preferred masses are strongly crosslinked butadiene-styrene, butadiene: acrylonitrile and polychloroprene rubbers. The usual crosslinking agents, such as. B. divinylbenzene or equivalent compounds are preferred. Other crosslinking agents for diene rubbers are disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 2,673,845, cited above.
It is possible to suspend the elastomeric material in the organic carrier liquid by various methods; z. B. a latex can be coagulated, dried and crushed, such as. B. by grinding, and then taken up in the organic system. According to another embodiment, the aqueous latex suspension can be converted into an organic-specific suspension by extraction or distillation processes are used, as they are, for. As described in Canadian Patent No. 586,489.
In all of these processes, attention must be paid to the milling or other treatment of the polymer in order to make the polymer useful in the elastomeric adhesives of the invention packaged in the aerosol spray containers.
It is preferred to use dry polymers which have to be ground before dispersing in the carrier liquid. The dry polymers have the advantage that the absence of water in the system rules out corrosion and other disadvantageous side reactions of the adhesive compositions as far as possible. Furthermore, the dry polymers are generally washed to remove impurities, such as.
B. surface-active agents, stabilizers and other substances that are still present from the polymerization process to be removed. In the absence of these impurities, somewhat better adhesive properties are obtained.
Furthermore, there is a greater possibility of variation in the composition of the adhesive masses, since then the choice of solvents and, accordingly, the choice of the resins soluble therein is not so limited as in dispersions that have been obtained by solvent extraction processes in which only one limited number of solvents is useful.
In the following examples, which serve to further explain the invention, all parts are parts by weight, unless otherwise stated. <I> Example 1 </I> A polymer base mass was produced by grinding the following elastomeric polymerizates, starting from Palymerisattafeln, in a 2.1 m rubber mill:

Milling was carried out for about 2.5 minutes while the temperature of the polymerizatrrasse was maintained at .26 to 57.degree.
The grinding conditions mentioned above are suitable for the particular elastomer formulation used, but are somewhat approximate. In order to achieve optimal spray properties and to adapt to variations in the properties that occur between different batches of commercially available substances, the following test is preferably carried out:
To determine the exact grinding conditions that are required to achieve optimum spray properties with a special starting material, it has proven to be useful to prepare an aliquot of the adhesive formulation mentioned below, omitting the methylene chloride and part of the hexane, and to prepare the ver - to check sprayability, such as
B. by spraying through a spray gun with low air volume, such as. B. the spray gun obtained from the De Vilbiss Company under the trade designation P-CGA-501 FF. In performing this test, a small batch of the elastomer is prepared on a laboratory rubber mill and any laboratory mixer capable of exerting high shear forces can be used to prepare the adhesive. Sufficient hexane should only be added to reduce the viscosity to 2000 cP. It was found that.
Formulations which can be sprayed satisfactorily from a distance of 60 cm onto a vertical surface with a viscosity of 2000-2300 cP using a spray gun with a small volume of air, can also be sprayed in a satisfactory manner from an aerosol spray container. If threading or cobweb-like formation occurs, it is a sign that there are too many small particles and that their number should be reduced.
This can preferably be achieved by reducing the meal to a minimum of 2 minutes. decreased while the other variables are kept constant. If reducing the meal to 2 minutes does not reduce the formation of the so-called cobweb-like structures, the ground product should be left to stand for 1-4 days at room temperature to allow the product to flow together again into larger particles.
If, on the other hand, excessive mist formation occurs, this is a sign that the proportion of large particles is too high. In this case the meal is enlarged to further reduce the particle size until a sprayable mixture is obtained.
The adhesive formulation into which the elastomer ordered as above is incorporated has the following composition:

The methylene chloride was then added with further mixing and the viscosity of the mixture obtained was adjusted to 700 cP by adding further hexane. The resinous ingredients dissolved in the hexene, while the elastomeric ingredients were in the form of dispersed insoluble gelated particles.
90 parts of this mixture was placed in a tin-plated aerosol spray can. The can was flushed with air. The valve assembly (Newman Green B-14-10) was stitched onto the can. 15 parts of propane as a propellant were forced through the valve. A Newman Green B-20-20 actuator was installed over the valves.
This retraction device had an opening with a diameter of 0.047 cm. The mixture in the can contained about 26% solids and was under a pressure of 2.5 kg / cm2 at 21 C.
The adhesive sprayed well on the aerosol spray container without producing cobweb-like structures or producing an excessively fine mist. When spraying onto porous base materials, such as. B. Styrofoam, the surface was provided with a uniform, sticky, chew-like cover, without the material being heavily moistened. When sprayed on paper, the paper did not wrinkle ..
In contrast to earlier attempts to package elastomeric adhesives with a high elastomer content in aerosol spray containers, the adhesive composition of the present example was still remarkably stable even after standing for a long time.
The container did not clump together and the material remained sprayable. All that was required to redisperse the contents of the container was to shake the container slightly by hand.

The milled elastomer was mixed with the remainder of the ingredients in a high shear mixer until a smooth and uniform mixture was obtained. The viscosity was reduced to 2000 cP by dilution with methyl ethyl ketone.

The adhesive could be sprayed from the aerosol spray container in a uniform, smooth spray jet and produced adhesive bonds of high strength. There was no excessive threading, syringing or excessive nebulization. <tb> Acetone <SEP> 78 The above adhesive composition was produced by coagulating the 90 parts of polychloroprene elastomer latex with acetone and drying at 50 ° C. for 60 hours.
The dried polymer and the 10 parts of polychloroprene were ground on a laboratory rubber mill under the conditions mentioned in Example 2 for 20 minutes. The temperature of the elastomer in the mill reached a maximum value of 60 C.
A premix was then prepared by reacting the oil-soluble resin, magnesia, and this water in the toluene in a Kady mill (commercially available from Kinetic Dispersion Corporation) at 82 ° C for a period of 30 minutes.
The base mass obtained in the rubber mill and the base mixture prepared as above were then mixed with the petrobenzene and acetone in a mixer with high shear capacity until a smooth and uniform dispersion was obtained. The viscosity was reduced to 350 cP using a carrier liquid made from petrol: acetone = 3: 2.
100 parts of this mixture, 50 parts of methylene chloride and 50 parts of dichlorodifluoromethane as propellant were introduced into an aerosol spray container lined with epoxy resin by the method of Example 1. The contents of the aerosol spray container contained about 12.5% solids and about 7.7% dispersed, insoluble polychloroprene elastomer. The internal pressure of the container was about 2.2 atmospheres at 21 C.
The adhesive could be sprayed onto the container in the form of an even, smooth spray jet without pulling threads, spraying or producing cobweb-like structures. As in Example 1, the adhesive could be sprayed onto porous surfaces without excessively soaking them; and the adhesive properties of the product were not measurably impaired by the aerosol packaging.
Several variables can be regulated to achieve the optimal spray properties and resistance. In the case of elastomers which have been converted from the latex state into a dispersion in an organic solvent without coagulation, the polymerization process used in the production of the latex can be regulated according to known processes so that larger or smaller elastomer particles are obtained as required .
In the case of dried and ground elastomers of the type described in Examples 1-3, in addition to the length of the meal and the age of the ground elastomer at the time at which it is mixed with the adhesive formulation according to Example 1, several other variables can be controlled . These include the degree of crosslinking of the rubber, the roller gap between the rollers of the mill, the ratio between the speeds of the two rollers and the grinding temperature.
The proportions of the constituents selected in Example 1 above provide a particularly suitable range from small to large colloidal particles. If a thread pulls due to the presence of too many smaller particles or too much soluble material, the proportion of crosslinked larger particles can be increased by increasing the proportion of the elastomer more strongly crosslinked with divinylbenzene.
When a. If the spray mist is too fine, the proportion of elastomers of the latter type should be reduced. The threading and the formation of cobweb-like structures can be further reduced by reducing the grinding or the ratio between the number of revolutions of the rollers during the grinding of the elastomer base, or the grinding,
Increase the temperature to a limit of 150 ° C and preferably below 120 ° C. In general, any change in manufacture that results in an increase in the proportion of smaller particles, an increase in the tendency to string and spider web-like structures and a decrease in the tendency to form too fine a spray, while on the other hand any change occurs - end of the manufacturing process,
which leads to an increase in the particle size, an increase in the tendency towards excessive misting and a reduction in the tendency to thread-pull and to the formation of structures similar to cobwebs. It will be understood that complete elimination of the formation of a non-adherent mist which is too fine is generally not possible, but excellent results can be obtained if not more than a minor proportion of the material released from the spray can to a non-adherent, too fine one Mist is sprayed.
Good sprayability is to be understood, apart from the absence of cobweb-like structures or excessive misting, that the spray jet, when sprayed onto a base material that is about 20-25 cm away from the spray nozzle, has an area with a diameter of at least 2, 5 cm covered. The adhesive is deposited in the form of a uniform, cohesive coating. The sprayed-on adhesive coating should not penetrate the porous base materials. With the adhesive compositions according to the invention, this risk does not exist because of the high solids content.
