Verfahren zur Behandlung synthetischer Kautschuklatices
EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
U. S. A. hergestellt wird.

Method for treating synthetic rubber latices
EMI1.1
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
B. An object of the present invention is to provide a method for treating synthetic rubber latex in order to reduce its viscosity.
Another object of the invention relates to the creation of a method for increasing the polymer particle size of a synthetic rubber latex. If desired, the concentration of the solids in the latex can be increased for a given viscosity.
According to the present invention, the method of treating an emulsion polymerized synthetic rubber latex to reduce its viscosity consists in allowing the latex to flow through a constriction at a pressure of essentially not less than 70 kg / cm, the latex being a Has a concentration of dispersed polymer particles of not less than 15% by weight.
According to one embodiment of the invention, a method for increasing the particle size of the dispersed polymer particles in an emulsion-polymerized synthetic rubber latex consists in constricting the latex at a pressure not significantly less than
70 kg / cm3, the latex having a concentration of dispersed polymer particles of not less than 15% by weight.
The constriction preferably has the shape of the nozzle of a homogenizing valve.
If a latex is concentrated to increase the solids content, the viscosity increases. It should therefore be noted that by reducing the viscosity in accordance with the present invention, the treated latex can be concentrated to a solids content higher than that of the latex before treatment without increasing the viscosity above the original value or beyond a certain degree . In the past, a latex was obtained by a polymerization process which initially had a viscosity below the maximum acceptable value and a comparatively low solids content.
Such a latex can be concentrated by known methods until the viscosity has reached the maximum acceptable value, although the solids content is still too low and further concentration is unsuccessful because an undesired increase in viscosity occurs. The present invention allows such a latex to be treated so as to reduce its original viscosity, thereby greatly increasing the solids content after the latex is concentrated. without the viscosity exceeding the maximum acceptable value.
The method according to the invention not only reduces the viscosity of a latex, but also has the effect that when treating a latex with a particle size of less than 1000, the average particle size is increased, so that a very useful latex is obtained for various purposes.
The latices that can be subjected to this process can be copolymers of a conjugated diolefin with an aryl olefin or acrylonitrile or homopolymers of a conjugated diolefin, an aryl olefin and chloroprene. The process is particularly suitable for latices which contain a copolymer of 1,3-butadiene and styrene and are produced by means of conventional emulsion polymerization processes. The synthetic rubber-forming monomers can be copolymerized to give a copolymer which contains 20-30% styrene bound. They are emulsified in water before or during the polymerization, customary emulsifiers being used in amounts of 2 to 5 parts per 100 parts of monomers, such as water-soluble fatty acid soaps, e.g. B.
Potassium or sodium oleate, or rosin acid soaps, e.g. B. the potassium or sodium soaps of resin acid, as well as mixtures of fatty acid and resin acid soaps. The temperature used in the copolymerization can be between 0 and 70 ° C, the usual redox systems, z. B. oxidizing agents such as organic peroxides (cumene hydroperoxide, diisopropylbenzene hydroperoxide) or alkali metal persulfates (potassium persulfate), mixed with reducing agents such as heavy metal salts, e.g. B. ferrous sulfate can be used. The reaction between the monomers can be stopped when 50-9 cp / o of the total monomer charge has been converted by adding a customary terminating agent, e.g.
B. 0.05-0.5 parts of sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate per 100 parts of the monomers introduced into the polymerization system, or the reaction is carried out to completion.
The unreacted monomers are removed and recovered from the resulting copolymer latex by conventional means such as heating under reduced pressure followed by steam stripping in vacuo.
The resulting latex can contain synthetic rubber particles in the order of magnitude from 300 to 1000, with 20-70% of the total particle surface being covered by the soap used as an emulsifier for the monomers. It can contain as little as 1.5% total solids.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Usual devices for the homogenization (e.g. for the production of homogeneous mixtures or dispersions) of liquids can be used to carry out the process according to the invention, this device consisting of a high pressure pump for conveying the latex to be treated through a nozzle or homogenizing valve at increased pressure. An example of a suitable device is the model no. 800 KL 24X homogenizer. 8 RAX manufactured by Manton Gaulin Manufacturing Co. Inc. of Everett, Mass. U. S.A. is manufactured.
The pressure to which the latex is pumped before it is forced through the nozzle or homogenizing valve can be up to 700 kg / cm 2 or more, but preferably not less than 70 kg / cm. The particle size achieved is higher the higher the pump pressures are.
The pH of the latex to be treated is adjusted using conventional methods, e.g. B. by adding carbon dioxide, sodium silicofluoride or glycine, the particle enlargement obtained by the process being higher the lower the pH. However, if the pH is too low, the polymer particles in the latex coagulate. The preferred PH of the latex to be treated is in the range from 7 to 11, but it can also be as high as 13.
As has already been stated, synthetic rubber latices with particles in the order of magnitude from 300 to 1000 can in part by means of conventional methods, e.g. B. Evaporation concentrated to 40% total solids. In the present process, the particle enlargement of the latex particles obtained is greater because the total solids content of the original latex is higher. The preferred total solids content of the synthetic rubber latex to be treated is 35-500/0. but an increase in particle size can also be achieved by the present process at latex concentrations as low as 150/0.
The temperature of the latex to be treated has an influence on the particle enlargement obtained by the present process, the enlargement obtained being higher than the temperature of the
EMI3.1
When treating latex with a small particle size, the latex pumping pressure, the pH, the total solids content and the temperature are precisely adjusted to produce a latex with particles that are larger than those in the original latex, if the latex through a constriction such as a nozzle or a homogenizing valve is pumped. Such a large-sized latex can be produced by conventional means, e.g. B. evaporation, are concentrated and gives an end product of at least 60% total solids content, without excessive viscosity must be accepted.
Typical test results obtained are shown below. The parts of the ingredients are based on 100 parts of the originally combined monomers which were introduced into the polymerization unit. In the following examples, coagulum is defined as the percentage by weight of solid synthetic rubber retained on a BSP 85 mesh screen after washing free of latex and drying and forcing the rubber through that screen.
The soap coverage of the particles and their size are determined using the so-called "soap titration" method. Small amounts of soap are added to the latex, the particles of which are not completely covered with soap, with a sharp change in the surface tension of the latex at the point at which the particles are completely covered. From this result, if one knows the soap originally present per gram of polymer and the effective molecular surface of the side used for the titration, the total surface of the particles and thus an average particle diameter can be calculated.
The latex used in the following examples was prepared by copolymerization at 5 ° C. of 1,3-butadiene and styrene in an aqueous emulsion, the latter containing 150 parts of water, 2.34 parts of oleic acid and 0.43 parts of potassium hydroxide. The ratio of the two monomers fed was 70 parts of butadiene: 30 parts of styrene. A standard "redox" activation system was used. As soon as about 68% of the monomers introduced had reacted, the copolymerization was terminated by adding 0.095 parts of sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate. The unreacted monomers were removed and recovered by the usual combination of evaporation by relaxation and stripping by means of steam in vacuo.
Example 1: The latex prepared as described above was concentrated to 46% solids by evaporation in a conventional device. Soap coverage and particle size were determined by the "soap titration" method, the former being 41% and the latter being 670%. The pH of the latex was adjusted to 8.75 and this was set at 316 kg / cm2 at two different

These results show that the increase in particle size increases when a latex is pumped through the homogenizer,
its total solids content compared to the original
Latex is increased.
It should be noted that an increase in the particle size of synthetic rubber latices by means of the present process can be obtained by using other combinations of temperature, original pH, original solids content and pumping pressures within the stated ranges.
The pressure treatment of a synthetic rubber latex according to the invention can be used in order to obtain an improved solids / viscosity relationship without having to increase the average size of the polymer particles. In accordance with this aspect of the invention, an already high solids latex can be treated to produce an improved latex, the improvement culminating in the fact that the latex viscosity is reduced, whereupon, if desired, the treated latex can be further concentrated without producing a high viscosity latex would what is undesirable.
Examples of treating latices with a high solids content are as follows:

The treated latex was then concentrated to 71.2 percent total solids in a known manner before the original viscosity of 2000 centipoise was reached.
Example 7: Another sample of the latex with the following properties:
Soap coverage 103 0/0 average particle size 1703 Å
Total solids 63.3%
Viscosity 280 centipoise was passed through the homogenizer at 562 kg / cm2, pH 8.28 at room temperature. The latex obtained had the following properties:
Soap coverage 103% average particle size 1703
Total solids 63,31o
Viscosity 125 centipoise.
