Description
Hermetically sealed container
The present invention relates to a hermetically sealed container.
While it is well known to wrap material in a hermetically sealed container with or without vacuum packaging, the linings of such packages are generally destroyed when opened once. Also, while the vacuum packaging of containers is widely practiced, the containers commonly used are generally not of those which are reclosable, and they often have to be evacuated when the container is filled and before or at the same time as the container is filled. container is hermetically sealed.
The container according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises an open-ended receptacle provided with at least one ventilation orifice passing through its wall, a strip of elastic material which surrounds the outer wall of the receptacle and covers the 'ventilation opening thus forming a valve and a cover having a skirt which surrounds the outer wall of the receptacle and is provided on its inner surface with a sealing and retaining rim such as by pushing the cover on the end open from the receptacle, the rim snaps onto the elastic band. The existence of a valve in the wall of the container offers the advantage that it can be evacuated after filling and closing, allowing several containers to be placed together in a reduced pressure atmosphere, thus reducing the pressure at the same time. inside the container through the valve.
In addition, the containers can be hermetically sealed after opening. The valve also prevents inadvertent removal of the cover when pressure rises excessively in the container.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, two embodiments of the container which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation, partially in section, of part of the first embodiment,
fig. 2 is a vertical section of part of the second embodiment.
Referring now to fig. 1, the container comprises a cylindrical receptacle 10 with an open end, the wall of which forms a shoulder 11 and which is provided with a shoulder 12 projecting from the outer side of the wall below the shoulder 11 and an air vent 13 passing through the wall of the receptacle, a cover 14 having a skirt 15 provided on its inner surface with a flange 16 and an elastic band 17 which surrounds the receptacle and covers the ventilation orifice 13.
In use, the container is closed by pushing the lid 14 over the open end of the receptacle causing the skirt 15 to expand on the shoulder 11 snapping onto it when the lid is fully pressed into place thereby engaging with the flange 16. , the elastic band 17, which acts both as a sealing seal and, cooperating with the ventilation orifice 13, as a valve.
When the pressure inside the receptacle is greater than that prevailing outside, as occurs if the container has been placed in an atmosphere of reduced pressure, for example, in order to achieve vacuum packaging or by being high at high altitude in an airplane, or if the contents of the container emit a gas, for example, by fermentation or by heating, the excess pressure is equalized through the vent 13, momentarily lifting the band 17 which then immediately close the ventilation opening.
The shoulder 12 protrudes at least as much as the outer periphery of the cover 14 and protects the lower end of the skirt 15 from accidental knocks which can remove the cover.
By observing fig. 2 Now, variations of the container described above are shown and are applicable when the lid is not sufficiently rigid to provide an effective seal with the receptacle, for example, if the receptacle has one or more straight sides, for example in the case of a rectangular receptacle. As shown, an additional skirt 18 is provided which engages the interior wall of the receptacle and which is provided with a reinforcing buttress 19.
The receptacle can be made of any material which is vapor tight as desirable to exclude or retain in the receptacle. The material will, of course, not be attacked by what is stored in the container and will withstand any temperatures the container encounters during use or storage. The material can be glass, metal or thermosetting or thermoplastic polymers, for example urea or phenol and formaldehyde resins (thermoset) or a polyolefin such as polypropylene or high density polypropylene or polyvinylidene chloride (thermoplastic).
The cover will be made of a material meeting the above criteria but will have sufficient elasticity to allow it to engage satisfactorily.
A thermoplastic polymeric material is thus preferred for this purpose and any of the thermoplastic polymers listed above can be used.
When the receptacle is molded, for example from a thermoplastic or thermosetting polymer, an excess line of material tends to appear due to the mismatch or line of molding of the two parts of the mold. In this case, the elastic band 17 will be thicker than the mold line so as to provide an effective seal.
The elastic band can be made of natural rubber and can be expanded and snapped into position or alternatively it can be molded in place and, for example, formed from silicone rubber, latex rubber or polyurethane. The thickness, composition and tension of the strip are chosen so that the excess pressure inside the container is released before the lid is ejected.
