Description

  Lid for container
The present invention relates to a cover, intended to be crimped onto the rim of a container, of the type comprising a tear strip.

In practice, this type of cover has certain drawbacks. It often happens that the tear strip breaks during the opening operation.

In addition, when the container has been filled hot, for example, and the lid has been sealed, the cooling of the contents causes a vacuum inside. Therefore, even after the tear strip has been removed, the atmospheric pressure exerted on the lid makes it difficult to separate it from the container.

The cover according to the invention avoids the aforementioned drawbacks.

It is characterized by the fact that the tear strip is divided into two segments, separated by a tongue integral with the body of the cover.

The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, one embodiment of the invention.

Fig. 1 is a plan view of the entire cover and container.

Figs. 2 and 3 are side views of the crimped lid on the container, in directions II and III respectively of FIG. 1.

Fig. 4 is a partial section on a larger scale, along the line IV-IV of FIG. 1, the rim of the container and the edge of the lid.

In the example shown in the drawing, the container 1, of generally cylindrical shape, consists of a stamped sheet of metal, the edge of which is rolled outwards to form a coil 2.

The cover 3 is also formed by a stamped metal sheet. I1 comprises an edge 4 in which is formed a weakening groove 5 (FIG. 4). The lower part of the edge 4 thus constitutes a tear strip 6. Between the rim 2 of the container 1 and the edge 4 of the cover 3 there is a seal 7 made of plastic. As shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the tear strip 6 is divided into two segments 8 and 9 separated by a tongue 10 integral with the body of the cover 3. Each of these segments ends with a tongue 11, 12 respectively, which facilitates the grip and the traction on the corresponding segment of the tear strip.

Dividing the tear strip into two segments reduces the length to be torn off in one go and therefore decreases the risk of the strip breaking and hand injuries during the opening operation. It is even possible to grasp each of the tabs 11 and 12 in one hand and pull out both segments at the same time.

Finally, when the two segments 8 and 9 have been torn off, the tongue 10 remains integral with the body of the cover 3 and makes it possible to easily lift the latter, even when it is retained by the vacuum prevailing inside the container. It should be noted that due to its absolutely separate position from the pull tabs 11 and 12, the opening tab 10 is not at risk of being confused with the latter. However, it is obvious that the tongue 10 shown in the drawing could be placed elsewhere on the periphery of the cover, the length of segments 8 and 9 then being unequal.

Many other variations are possible. In particular, the general shape of the container 1 and of the cover 3, the material which constitutes them and the composition of the seal 7 can be arbitrary.

For example, the container may have the shape of a low-rise cylinder, a truncated cone, a pot or a flask; it can be made of metal, plastic, glass or ceramic. The seal can be made of plastic or rubber. The cover, finally, can be made of aluminum, tinplate or plastic.
