Process for the optical brightening of plastics
The invention relates to a method for the optical brightening of plastics or non-textile structures made from them, these using naphthalimide derivatives of the formula:
EMI1.1
in which R1 is an organic non-chromogenic group and R2 is a hydrogen atom or an organic, non-chromogenic group.
It has been found that naphthalimide derivatives of the formula (1) have very advantageous effects in the optical brightening of plastics made of artificial or synthetic high molecular weight materials.
If these compounds are dissolved or dispersed in a suitable solvent and applied to plastics made from the above base material, they fluoresce in a certain greenish blue in daylight or in ultraviolet light and show a wide absorption in the ultraviolet range. Furthermore, these compounds are generally very stable and have a great affinity for plastics made from artificial or synthetic organic high molecular weight materials. The compounds of the formula (1) therefore exert an excellent and permanent optical bleaching effect on plastics made from the above-mentioned materials.
Various naphthalimide derivatives can be used as the optical bleaching agent of the above formula (1). R1 in the formula (1) can e.g. B. be an alkyl radical with a straight or branched carbon chain, such as methyl, ethyl, n- or isopropyl, or isobutyl, n- or isopentyl, or isohexyl, n-octyl, 2-ethylhexyl, or isododecyl and or isotridecyl.
Furthermore, R1 can be a substituted alkyl radical which is substituted by at least one oxy, alkoxy, aryl, primary amino group, secondary amino group such as alkylamino, tertiary amino such as bisalkylamino and quaternary ammonium such as trialkyl ammonium. These residues can e.g. B. oxyethyl, oxypropyl, oxybutyl, methoxyethyl, sithoxyethyl, ethoxypropyl, propoxypropyl, benzyl, aminoethyl, aminopropyl, N, N-dimethylamino ethyl, N, N-dimethylaminopropyl, N-trimethylammoniumethyl, N-trimethylammoniumpropyl, N-triethylammonium N-Tri äthylammoniumpropyl be.
Furthermore, R1 can be an aryl group such as phenyl and! NaphthyI or a substituted aryl group which is substituted by at least one alkyl, alkoxy, oxy, alkoxyalkyl, oxyalkyl, amino, secondary aminoalkyl, tertiary aminoalkyl, quaternary ammonium alkyl group or a nitro group or a halogen. Furthermore, R1 can also be a cycloaliphatic group such as cyclohexyl. R1 can also be e.g. B. be a group of the following formula:
EMI1.2
In contrast, R in formula (1) denotes a hydrogen atom or an organic, non-chromogenic group.
This organic, non-chromogenic group can be one of the groups mentioned above for R1.
For the preparation of the new naphthalimide derivatives, 4-mercaptonaphthalimide or their derivatives of the following formula are expedient:
EMI1.3
in which M denotes a hydrogen atom or an alkali metal and R2 has the same meaning as in the formula (1), etherified with a non-dye-like sitherification agent.
To etherify the 4-mercaptonaphthalimides, esters of strong acids without dye properties can be used. Such esters are e.g. B. alkyl sulfate such as dimethyl sulfate or diethyl sulfate. As etherifying agents, however, organic compounds having an active halogen atom, e.g. B. alkyl halides such as methyl iodide, ethyl iodide, M; ethyl bromide Ethyl bromide, butyl bromide, methyl chloride and ethyl chloride or substituted alkyl halides such as affiylene chlorohydrin and 1 -N, N-dimethyiamino-2-chloroethane, benzyl chloride or halogenated aryl derivatives such as p-nitrochlorobenzene and 4-chloro-N-methylnaphthalimide be used.
Esters of organic sulfonic acids, such as the methyl ester of p-toluenesulfonic acid or the 2ithyl ester of p-toluenesulfonic acid, can also be used for etherification. The etherification can advantageously be carried out in the presence of alkaline substances, such as alkali hydroxides, alkali carbonates, alkali bicarbonates, alkali phosphates, alkali silicates and alkali acetates.
The etherification can be carried out at temperatures from about 20 to 2000 ° C., preferably using inert diluents such as water or alcohols. A product of the formula (1) is obtained. The reaction product can be precipitated at room temperature and then filtered off. The reaction liquid can, however, also be acidified or concentrated by distilling off the reaction liquid, the reaction product precipitating and then being filtered off. The purity of the reaction product thus obtained is generally sufficiently high. However, it can optionally be increased by means of an alkaline aqueous solution by washing the reaction product or by recrystallizing the product in a solvent.
The 4-mercaptonaphthalimides used as the starting material in the above processes can advantageously be prepared by using 4-halonaphthalimides of the following formula:
EMI2.1
in which X is a halogen atom and R2 has the same meaning as in the above formula (1), with alkali metal sulfides of the formula M2Sy, in which M is an alkali metal and y is a number from 1 to 5, in the presence of an inert solvent such as water or alcohol or a mixture of these solvents are reacted at a temperature of 30 to 1000 C.
The above 4-halonaphthalimides can advantageously be prepared by one of the following two processes:
EMI2.2
where M is a hydrogen atom or an alkali metal and X is a halogen atom.
The new optical bleaching agents of the formula (1) all exert excellent optical bleaching effects when used on various plastics made from artificial or synthetic high molecular weight organic resins when applied or when added.
The optical bleaching agents can be used to lighten non-textile structures such as films, foils, plates, sleeves, tubes, blocks and the like made of various synthetic or artificial resins. For example, by mixing the optical lightening agent with a synthetic resin such as polystyrene: or polymethyl methacrylate and then shaping in an extrusion or injection molding process, transparent greenish-blue fluorescent structures can be obtained. Here, glossy, colored structures can be obtained by adding a suitable colorant in the above-mentioned mixing process.
Furthermore, the optical bleaching agents can also be used for the optical brightening of various types of molding materials made of synthetic resins, such as polyvinyl chloride, polyacrylate, polyester, polycarbonate, polyurethane, polyamide and polyolefin. With these B. treatments, excellent optical brightening is always achieved, even if the degree is not always the same.
The optical bleaching by means of the new optical bleaching agents can also be carried out in a manner other than by the method mentioned above. So z. The optical bleaching agent can usually be mixed with this in a suitable stage of the process for producing the plastics. A solution of the new optical bleaching agents in a suitable solvent can also be applied to Idlie non-textile structures.
For the present process, protection is only claimed insofar as it is not a treatment of textile fibers in the textile industry.
The new optical bleaches can also be mixed with an optical bleach with the following formula:
EMI3.1
in which R1 and Ro have the same meaning as in the above formula (1) can be used. Such mixtures result in an optical brightening that fluoresces in a more bluish tint.
In the following, the invention is explained in more detail on the basis of exemplary embodiments, without, however, being restricted thereto. The term parts should be understood to mean parts by weight. The melting point of the compounds listed in the examples is not corrected.
example
A mixture of 2 parts of N-methyl-4-methylthio naphthalimide and 10,000 parts of a polystyrene resin molding are kneaded at 190 to 2000 C and then processed into sheets by injection molding. In this way a transparent plate which fluoresces blue is obtained. By adding 20 to 50 parts of titanium dioxide during the above kneading, a white, optically brightened plate is obtained.
If the compounds listed in the table below are used, equally good results are obtained.
If, instead of the polystyrene resin used in this example, polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl chloride, polyamide, polyester and polycarbonate resins are used, good optical brightening is achieved as well.

Preparation of N-methyl-4-methylthionaphthalimide
24.6 parts of N-methyl-4-chloronaphthalimide are a solution consisting of 15,
6 parts of sodium sulfide (Na2S), 100 parts of water and 200 parts of methanol were added. The solution is kept at the boiling point for 4 hours for the purpose of reaction. After the reaction has ended, the reaction liquid is cooled to about 500 ° C. and this solution of 20.8 parts of sodium bisulfite and 40 parts of water is added, whereupon the precipitate is filtered off. The filtrate contains 25.2 parts of the sodium salt of N-methyl-4-mercaptonaphthalimide. The filtrate is acidified by means of dilute hydrochloric acid, filtered off from the precipitate, washed with cold water until the precipitate is neutral and dried under reduced pressure. In this way 19.5 parts of N-methyl4-mercaptonaphthalimide with a melting point of 214.5 to 216.20C are obtained.
The analytical values of this product are almost identical to the theoretical ones: C (%) H (%) N (%) S (%)

12.0 parts of sodium hydroxide and 26.5 parts of the sodium salt of N-methyl-4-mercaptonaphthalimide are dissolved in 500 parts of water. 25.2 parts of dimethyl sulfate are added to the solution obtained and the solution is stirred at 20 to 300 ° C. for 10 hours. After the reaction has ended, the reaction mixture is filtered off from the precipitate. The filter cake is washed successively with an aqueous sodium carbonate solution and then with water until it is neutral. The filter cake is then dried.
This gives N-methyl-4-methylthionaphthalimide in theoretical yield. By recrystallizing this product in acetic acid, a pure product with a melting point of 219.5 to 220.00 ° C. The analytical values of the product almost agree with the calculated ones.
