la fig. 4 est une vue de l'extrémité amont des moyens de réglage montrés à la fig. 2 détachés de l'unité de propulsion et vus en direction de la flèche V de la fig. 2, la fig. 5 est une vue latérale en coupe d'une autre forme d'exécution de moyens de réglage du jet, con venant pour être utilisée avec l'unité de propulsion représentée à la fig 1 ; La fig. 6 est une vue de bout de l'extrémité de sortie des moyens de réglage représentés à la fig. 5 ;

Une autre forme d'exécution des moyens de com mande de l'écoulement du jet est représentée schémati quement à la fig. 8 et comprend un organe d'entraîne ment à écoulement axial tournant autour d'un axe ver tical à l'intérieur d'un conduit d'organe d'entraînement, dont les extrémités supérieure et inférieure constituent respectivement une entrée dans et une sortie de décharge de l'organe d'entraînement, un carter d'écoulement co nique ouvert à sa base et entourant l'organe d'entraîne ment et le conduit, le carter étant espacé du conduit dr;
Marine jet propulsion unit The present invention relates to a marine jet propulsion unit, comprising an axial flow water drive member controlled by the engine and rotating in a duct to supply the thrust jet. .
Such marine jet propulsion units usually create their thrust by the fact that the drive member maintains water pressure in a casing or aft duct from which it spouts out as a large jet. speed. It has been found that increasing the inlet to outlet velocity by such a pressurized system results in a loss of efficiency which would not occur if the required increase in inlet velocity to Release. was obtained without resorting to pressurization. Furthermore, such a pressurized system is more prone to cavitation or water hammer than a system without pressurization would be.
The present invention aims to remedy these drawbacks and the marine propulsion unit which is the subject thereof is characterized in that the duct of the drive member comprises a frustoconical section surrounding the drive member, the diameter of the frustoconical section decreasing in the direction going from the inlet edges to the trailing edges of the vanes of the dragging member, at least one inlet section, extending forwards with respect to the direction of flow from the frustoconical section, the diameter of the inlet section increasing faster than that of the frustoconical section and uniformly from the tapered truncated section, and an outlet section of uniform cross section s' extending back from the frustoconical section,
the length of each of said sections not being greater than that of the conical section, and the hub of the drive member increasing in diameter from the inlet edge to the trailing edge of the vanes extending from the hub . The appended drawing represents, by way of example, two embodiments of the object of the invention.

Referring to fig. 1, the jet propulsion unit comprises an axial flow drive member 10 keyed to a shaft 11 driven by a motor (not shown). The shaft of the drive member is closed inside a duct 12 terminating in the jet cone. The jet cone comprises a conical section 13, of length L1, and inside which the drive member 10 can rotate ; an inlet section 14, of length L2 and extending upstream of section 13, and a cylindrical outlet section 15, which will hereinafter be designated by the expression nozzle, and of length L3 extending downstream of the conical section 13.
In the description and in the claims, the terms upstream and downstream are to be understood as referring to the normal direction of the flow of water through the conduit caused by the drive member. The vanes of the drive member 10, one of which is shown schematically at 16, are attached to a hub 17, the diameter and transverse area of which increase from the upstream end to the downstream end.
We have found that by choosing the configuration and dimensions of the organ and the drive organ duct within closely defined limits, the total efficiency of the unit can be substantially increased while in at the same time cavitation and water hammer can be avoided. In Table I reproduced below, we have indicated the preferred ranges and the optimum value in each range.

On the contrary, for low speeds of the drive member, it is advantageous in order to obtain the highest efficiency to maintain L3 at or near its maximum value and to decrease L2 to zero.
The hub of the drive member increases in diameter from its anterior end in such a way that in longitudinal profile the outer surface of the hub follows an arc of circle with center A and radius a, where a = from 1.05 to 1.25 D, with an optimum = at 1.15 D, the center A being located in a plane Y passing through the rear end of the hub, and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the latter, and spaced from said axis by a distance Dl equal to D. The face of each blade of the drive member increases by pitch in specific proportion depending on the increasing diameter of the hub as well as on the taper angle of the frustoconical section of the duct.
In the example shown, the thrust face of each blade going from the edge leading to the trailing edge of the latter follows a curve defined by two arcs B1 and Cl of a circle which intersect, one with center B and radius b, where b = appreciably 0.62 P. and the other with center C and radius c, where c = appreciably 0.83 P.
The center B is located at a point of a line Z bisecting perpendicular to the reference line of the pitch Pl and is spaced from the latter by a distance BZ, where BZ = substantially 0.60P, and the center C is also located on line Z but is spaced from line PL by a distance CZ, where CZ = substantially 0.80 P, P representing the pitch of the drive member.
The jet propulsion unit of the present invention may be mounted in or attached to the hull of the ship in any convenient manner permitting substantially unimpeded flow passage in and out of the driver conduit. It can, for example, be mounted inside or in front of a casing for adjusting the flow of the jet such as that which will be described below.
Where the tuning housing is not in use and the craft is controlled in the forward and aft directions by means, for example, of rudders arranged outside the stream of the jet generated by the unit, the The drive member may be provided with a cylindrical extension of diameter equal to that of the rear face of the hub and extending rearwardly thereof over a distance equal to the length of the nozzle section of the duct d 'drive unit.
In the propulsion unit of the present invention we have used a frustoconical section to surround the vanes of the axial flow drive member, in combination with a hub of a suitable curvature profile, as long as this construction greatly simplifies the production of the driver duct as a housing and avoids the problems that would be caused by internal machining of the duct to obtain a curved internal profile.
Adjustment means suitable for use in combination with the jet propulsion unit described above may include a tubular housing adapted to be mounted downstream of and in axial alignment with the outlet of the propulsion unit by. jet so as to constitute a secondary jet outlet, a rudder deflector mounted inside the downstream end of the tubular casing for a pivoting movement about a vertical axis,
valve means mounted to pivot inside the tubular casing upstream of the rudder deflector in order to be able to move between a position for which the tubular casing is substantially unobstructed by the valve means and a position for which the passage is entirely closed by the valve means, and an auxiliary jet outlet directed forward communicating with the tubular passage upstream of the valve means, the auxiliary jet outlet being angularly movable in a horizontal plane.
An example of jet flow adjustment means will now be described with reference to FIG. 2; in which is shown a jet propulsion unit 20 of the type described and shown in FIG. 1; attached to the outlet end of a generally tubular intake housing 22 mounted in a boat, the bottom of which is indicated at B, so that the intake port 24 of the housing is substantially flush with the bottom B and that the outlet port 26 of the housing extends through the transom T and in a substantially horizontal direction.
An adjustment housing 28 comprising means for adjusting the flow of the jet is fixed to a false rear panel FT extending vertically downwards from an intermediate point of the transom so as to surround the outlet orifice 26 housing 22.
Intake housing 22 provides a substantially unobstructed, smooth-walled curved passage extending between the bottom and transom of the boat and aligned with the longitudinal axis of the boat. The housing 22 in known manner has a shaft gland 30 through which the shaft 32 of the propulsion unit 20 passes, and further supports thrust bearings 34 for the shaft 32 of the shaft. drive unit.
The duct 36 of the propulsion unit 20 is fixed to the end face of the outlet of the housing 22 by bolts 38 passing through a flange 40 on the duct 36, the flange 40 being disposed on the duct 36 of such that most of the length of duct 36 extends rearward beyond outlet port 26 of housing 22.
The crankcase inlet 22 is provided with a perforated screen or screen 42 to prevent the entry of floating debris into the inlet crankcase which could damage the propulsion unit. An inspection cover 44 may be disposed in the upper wall of the housing 22.
The adjustment housing 28 is constituted by a tube with open ends, substantially cylindrical, constituting a secondary jet outlet, the minimum internal diameter of which is equal to or greater than the diameter of the outlet of the propulsion unit 20. A end portion 46 of housing 28 has an enlarged cross-sectional area relative to the rest of the housing.
The end portion 46 is provided with a peripheral flange 48 by means of which the casing 28 is fixed to the intake casing 22, for example by bolts (not shown) passing through the flange 48, the false transom FT and through a circumferential flange 50 provided on the intake housing 22 near the outlet 26 thereof.
When attached to the intake housing 22, the portion 46 of the housing 28 coaxially surrounds the exposed portion of the drive member duct 36 and forms a watertight seal between the outlet of the propulsion unit. 20 and the passage portion 52 of the housing 28, through which the stream of the jet passes. The length of the end portion 46 is chosen such that the upstream end of the passage 52 is spaced rearwardly from the downstream end of the conduit 36 by a small gap 53, the purpose of which will be explained below. after.
A disc valve 54 is disposed within the passage portion 52, this valve being angularly movable about a horizontal axis 55 which extends transversely to the longitudinal axis of the passage, passing through. the plane of the disc valve and through the center thereof.
The disc valve can be moved angularly by a lever arm (not shown) which can be operated remotely, for example from inside the boat, between a position for which the disc valve is in a horizontal plane and provides virtually no obstruction to the flow of liquid through passage 52 and a position in which the disc valve is substantially in a vertical plane and closes passage 52 preventing the flow of liquid through it .
An annular duct 56 surrounds the upstream end of passage 52 and connects the interior of housing 28 in front of passage 52 to an outlet 57 formed in a circular plate 58 mounted in an opening 59 formed in the lower side of housing 28. The outlet 57, hereinafter referred to as the reverse jet is inclined downwardly at an angle of approximately 300 from the horizontal, and the plate 58 is angularly movable between fixed limits within a horizontal plane around a vertical pivot 61 passing through the center of the plate 58,
in such a way that in its middle position between the limits of its angular displacement the reverse jet is directed forward under the boat and that in either of its extreme limits of angular displacement the exit is inclined relative to the longitudinal axis of the boat at an angle, for example equal to approximately 35.
The plate 58 is connected by a linkage 60 to a forward rudder deflector plate 62 which is mounted at the downstream end of the passage 52 so as to be able to move about a vertical axis between bearings 64 formed in one piece. with the housing 28. The plate 62, of generally rectangular profile, is provided with a part 66 extending upstream of its vertical pivot axis, through the lower half of the passage 52. The part 66 has a curved lower edge 68 and a straight horizontal upper edge 70.
It will be understood that the omission of a corresponding upstream extension of the plate 62 in the upper half of the passage 52 makes it possible to move the disc valve 54 angularly to a horizontal position in which it covers the upstream part 66 of the deflector plate. 62.
In the embodiment shown, the deflector plate 62 is connected by a shaft 71 and a linkage 72 (fig. 3) to a vertical shaft 74, the movements of which are controlled by a bar or by a mechanical connection with a steering wheel (not shown).
For forward propulsion, the disc valve 54 is maintained in its horizontal or open position and the direction of the boat is controlled by the deflector 62 in response to the movements of the shaft 74. Note that when the deflector has rotated a substantial angle, for example 35, from the front back line, substantially three quarters of the jet stream is deflected by plate 62 while the remainder may pass over the horizontal surface 70 of the anterior extension 66 of the plate 62, thereby maintaining a certain proportion of forward thrust as the craft is maneuvered by deflecting most of the stream of the jet.
The rear propulsion of the boat is obtained by closing the disc valve 54, which puts the jet under pressure in front of the valve and has the effect that the efflux of the jet is diverted through the annular passage 56 and is discharged through the reverse jet outlet 57. The direction of the craft in reverse is controlled by the movement of the shaft 74 which is connected to the plate 58 by the linkage 72, the deflector plate 62 and the crankshaft 60. An angular displacement of the reverse jet outlet 57 is thus accompanied by an equal angular movement and in opposite direction of the deflector plate 62.
A neutral position in which the jet stream is distributed equally between the forward and reverse outputs is obtained by a suitable intermediate angular displacement of the disc valve 54 .
Another embodiment of jet current control means suitable for use with the propulsion unit of the present invention may include a jet thrust reverser mounted on the transom of a boat for use with the propulsion unit of the present invention. be able to perform a pivoting movement about a horizontal axis between an inactive position in which the overturning member is disposed above and away from the outlet of the jet unit and an active position in which The member is located in the path of the stream of the jet discharged by the propulsion unit, the thrust reverser member having a curved profile to deflect the stream of the jet downwards and forwards at under the boat,
a steering control deflector pivoting about a vertical axis mounted between the output of the propulsion unit and the reversing member in its active position, and means carried by the steering control deflector to make vary the angular deflection of the stream of the jet, deflected forwards by the reversing device, in such a way that the boat can be steered in reverse. Referring to fig. 5 and 6, which represent this embodiment, the elements of the propulsion unit and of the boat which are similar to those shown in FIGS. 2 to 4 are designated by the same reference numerals.
The jet control means comprise a cap 80 fixed to the transom FT and a thrust reversal member which is constituted by a curved rectangular plate 82 and associated side plates 84 pivotally mounted between consoles 86 carried by the transom. FT below capu chon 80 to move around a horizontal axis 88.
The overturning member 82 is pivotable (by means not shown) between a raised position in which it is disposed away from and above the outlet of the jet propulsion unit 20 and a lowered active position. wherein the plate 82 deflects the jet stream down and forward below the boat to provide reverse thrust.
A directional control deflector plate 90 is mounted below the cap 80 and between the jet outlet and the reversing member 82. The deflector 90 is movable about a vertical axis between bearings 92 and is formed with a curved trailing edge corresponding to the profile of the plate 82.
On each side of the directional control deflector 90 is a fixed vane 94 inclined outward and downward with respect to the plane of the deflector 90 and disposed thereon so as to lie below the path. through which the stream of the jet passes when the overturning member 82 is in the inactive position.
When the reversing member 82 is lowered to its active position, the stream of the jet is deflected downwards, striking either of the vanes 94 depending on the angular position of the directional control deflector 90 which thus deflects. the stream of the jet deflected obliquely down one side or the other of the boat, allowing the boat to be steered in reverse.
Another embodiment of the jet flow control means for a jet propulsion unit is shown in fig. 7 and comprises a housing adapted to be mounted in an opening in the bottom of the boat, an inlet opening in the housing containing an axial flow drive member, a flow passage extending substantially horizontally to inside the housing from the discharge side of the drive unit, a downwardly directed outlet port communicating with the flow passage, and a circular frame disposed in the outlet and rotatable in a horizontal plane normal to the axis of the outlet,
the frame having fixed on it one or more deflector blades pivotable about horizontal axes between a first active position in which the jet directed downwards is deflected towards a horizontal plane and in a direction normal to the axis of the deflector or deflectors, and a second active position in which the jet is similarly deflected towards a horizontal plane but in a direction opposite to the direction mentioned first, and by an intermediate position for which the jet is at least partially blocked. Referring to fig. 7, the housing indicated by reference numeral 140 is rectangular in plan and is provided with a vertical inlet 142 communicating with a horizontal flow passage 144 and a vertical outlet 146.
The inlet 142 is in the form of a frustoconical duct and surrounds the drive member 148 of the jet propulsion unit, the drive shaft 150 of which extends vertically upwards through the passage. flow 144 and the top of the housing 140, being connected in a known manner to a drive motor 141. Inside the outlet 146 is mounted a control device consisting of a circular frame which can turn 152 supporting deflectors 154, each of which includes an oblong rectangular plate with open space along its shortest axis. The deflectors 154 are spaced parallel to each other inside the frame 152 and can pivot about a horizontal axis 156, by means of an interconnection linkage 158.
The rotary frame 152 is attached to a hollow shaft 160 which extends upwardly through the flow passage 144 and the housing 140 to be connected by any suitable means to the steering control mechanism of the boat.
A flexible cable 162 passes through the hollow shaft 160 and is connected to the central deflector 164. It is thus seen by rotating the deflectors 154 about their pivot axis 156 and rotating the frame 152 at a substantially angle. equal to 90o on either side of the longitudinal axis of the housing 140, the stream of the jet can be deflected in any desired direction to a horizontal plane, thus allowing the craft to be driven in any desired direction .
If the deflectors 154 are moved to an intermediate position in which they lie in substantially horizontal planes the stream of the jet is partially obstructed, providing a neutral position in which the propellant thrust in one direction is opposed by equal thrust and opposite in the opposite direction.
Another embodiment of the means for controlling the flow of the jet is shown schematically in FIG. 8 and comprises an axial flow drive member rotating about a vertical axis inside a drive member duct, the upper and lower ends of which respectively constitute an inlet into and an outlet of. discharge from the drive member, a conical flow casing open at its base and surrounding the drive member and the conduit, the casing being spaced from the conduit dr;
so as to delimit a vertical annular passage through which water can be sucked into the inlet of the drive member to be subsequently discharged downwardly through said duct and jet deflector means rotatably mounted below of the driving member duct and arranged to deflect the jet discharged by it in a substantially horizontal plane and in any desired direction therein.
Fig. 8 shows a vertically mounted jet propulsion unit disposed in an opening in the bottom of the boat. A substantially tapered open-bottom housing 170 surrounds and supports a drive member 172 which is driven by a vertical shaft 174 which extends upwardly through a mounting plate 176, the shaft. 174 being connected to a drive motor 177 mounted on the plate 176.
The driver 172 is surrounded by a conical duct 178 which in turn is supported by side members 180 extending across the open bottom of the housing 170. The space between the duct and the side wall 182 of the housing forms an annular inlet 183 through which water can be drawn upwardly by the drive member to be discharged downwardly through the duct as a jet.
A rotating ring 184 carrying a series of deflector blades 186 is mounted below the driver, the blades 186 being arranged to deflect the jet spurting out of the conduit 178 from a substantially right angle so that the jet is discharged in a horizontal plane in a direction determined by the angular rotation of the ring 184. A shaft 188 geared to the ring 184 and s' extending vertically upward through the housing 170 to be connected to the helm or steering wheel of the boat, allows the ring 184 to be rotated at an angle of 3600, allowing maneuvering in any direction.
