Process for the production of spinnable solutions of polymers of acrylonitrile Switzerland. Patent No. 418 517 of February 16, 1962 relates to a process for the preparation of spinning solutions of polyacrylonitrile in aqueous nitric acid, which is characterized by
that monomeric acrylonitrile is polymerized in aqueous nitric acid with an HNO3 content of 50-68% by weight to form a solution.
The solutions prepared by the process mentioned still contain relatively large amounts of mono mers which u. a. Difficulties in further processing because of their high toxicity. The separation of the monomer from the polymer solution cannot be carried out successfully because of the high viscosity of the solution and the sensitivity of the polymer dissolved in nitric acid. An increase in the polymerization time has undesirable side reactions, such as. B.
Hydrolyses of the nitrile groups on the polymer.
The aim of the present invention is to overcome the difficulties outlined above.
It has been found that when using special catalytic systems, not only a practically non-hydrolyzed polymer .des acrylonitrile can be obtained, but that the polymer yield is also very substantial, preferably over 96,010, with a relatively shorter polymerisation time of e.g. . B. less than 24 hours and lower reaction temperature can be increased.
The invention relates to a method for the production of spinnable solutions of polymers of acrylonitrile, which consist of at least 80% acrylonitrile, by polymerizing the or
the monomers dissolved in aqueous nitric acid with an HNO, content of 55-68% by weight, which is characterized in that the polymerization takes place in the presence of a catalyst system,
consisting of peroxidic compounds and metal enolates derived from enolization capable / 3-dicarbonyl compounds.
For the purposes of the present invention, polyacrylonitrile is understood to mean polymers which, in addition to acrylonitrile, contain 0-20% by weight of other copolymerizable compounds. Copolymerisierbaxe compounds are z. B.
Esters of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid, vinyl pyridine, unsaturated, polymerizable aliphatic and aromatic sulfonic acids.
The monomer is expediently introduced into the solvent in amounts of 10-30% by weight, based on the amount of solvent.
The peroxydi- see compounds used in the catalyst system are z. B. peroxydisulfuric acid and its alkali salts, peroxymono @ sulfuric acid (Caro's acid), acetyl peroxide. They are preferably used in amounts of 0.0001-0.02 mol per mol of monomer.
The metallic enolates are e.g. B. iron acetylacetonate, copper acetylacetonate, iron benzoylacetonate and copper benzoylacetonate. The metallic enolate can be added to the reaction mixture as such or also formed in situ.
It is assumed that the metallic enolate has the property of an activator, since when it is added an acceleration of the beginning of the reaction is determined. In addition, with the metallic enolate, and especially if it is formed in situ, with an excess of metal or dicarbonyl compound, the molecular weight of the polymer to be formed can be influenced.
It is advantageous to introduce 0.00001-0.04 mol of metallic enolate per mol of monomer into the reaction medium.
In the in situ formation of the metallic enolate, which is preferably carried out, it is advantageous to add 0.00001-0.02 mol of dicarbonyl compound and 0.00001-0.02 mol of soluble metal or metal salt, such as.
B. Iron II nitrate introduced per mole of monomer. An excess of dicarbonyl compound or metal can be advantageous in certain cases.
The polymerization can be carried out in the usual way, e.g. B. batchwise or continuously, at temperatures from -15 to +15 C and can be carried out under reduced, normal or increased pressure.
A particular advantage of the present invention is that the copolymerization with temperature-sensitive monomers, such as. B. with unsaturated aliphatic or aromatic sulfonic acids, to allow th, which, especially for the dyeability of the fiber, are of great importance.
Example 1 In a three-necked flask flushed with nitrogen, in which a stirrer and a thermometer are arranged and which is immersed in an ice water bath, 425 g 60% nitric acid, 0.075 g Fe (NO3 ) 39H20, 75 g acrylonitrile, 3 g ammonium peroxydisulfate introduced.
0.5 cm 3 of acetylacetone are added to the reaction medium, which has been cooled to 0 C. With slow stirring for 18 hours at a reaction temperature between 0 and 2 C, a highly viscous spinnable solution is gradually formed, which finally contains 73.5 g of Polymeris.at,
corresponding to a yield of 98%. The polymer has a K value (according to Fikentscher) of 78.9.
The IR spectrogram shows that at least 99.5% of the nitrile groups in the polymer molecule have been retained.
Example 2 Under the conditions shown in Example 1, 69 g of acrylonitrile and 6 g of methyl acrylate are copolymerized. The polymer solution obtained contains 72 g of copolymer,
which corresponds to a yield of 96%. The IR spectrum shows that approx. 8% methyl acrylate is incorporated in the copolymer and that at least 99,
5% of the nitrile: groups present are unchanged (ie not hydrolyzed).
Example 3 In a stainless steel vessel provided with brine cooling and paddle stirrer and carefully flushed with nitrogen, 118.330 kg of 60% nitric acid 19.108 kg of acrylonitrile 1.670 kg of methyl acrylate 0.104 kg of sodium methallyl sulfonate are added while stirring at 0 ° C. 0.840 kg ammonium peroxydisulphate 0.020 kg Fe (N03)
39H20 initiated. 140 cm 3 of acetyl acetate are added to the reaction mixture, which has been cooled to 0 C. After a reaction time of 22 hours at approx. 0 ° C., a spinnable polymer solution is present in 99% yield, the K value of which is 71.5, and which z. B. can be spun according to the process of Swiss Patent No. 348 776.
The fibers obtained have excellent dyeability with good physical properties. The IR spectrum shows that more than 99.5% of the nitrile groups present in the polymer have remained unchanged.
