Process for the production of a crosslinked polyimide resin Processes for the production of linear polyimides are already known. According to one of these methods,
a polyimide is made in two distinct phases. The first phase consists in polymerizing a mixture of a diamine and a dianhydride of a tetracarboxylic acid to obtain a polyamide acid. The second phase consists in forming an imide ring by cyclization of this acid and in removing the resulting water.
Thanks to their imidic structure, the polyamides obtained by this process have excellent thermal stability. However, this process has the drawback of not making it possible to obtain polyamides in the form of rarps having a certain thickness, in particular by softening. This is because the cyclization with the simultaneous formation of water takes place after the polymerization and the removal of this water prevents molding.
It is also not possible to use such a polyimide for the manufacture of molded articles because it is infusible and insoluble.
The present invention relates to a process for manufacturing a crosslinked polyimide resin, in the form of both a powder and a body, in particular by molding. This process is characterized by the fact that at a temperature between 800 and 4000 C and for the time necessary to obtain a crosslinked resin, at least one N, N'-bis-imide of a non-dicarboxylic acid is heated. saturated with the general formula
EMI0001.0038
in which Rl, which signifies a divalent radical comprising several carbon atoms,
is a substituted or unsubstituted alkylene residue, or a substituted or unsubstituted arylene residue, hydrogenated or not, or substituted or unsubstituted arylene residues, hydrogenated or not, linked by at least one of the following radicals: -CH2-, -S0. - and -0-, R2 signifying a divalent radical comprising at least one double bond. The process therefore consists in polymerizing at least one N, N'-bis-imide; of an unsaturated -dicarboxylic acid.
The polymerization is carried out by heating said bis-imide to a temperature between 800 and 4000 C. The best results have been obtained at temperatures between 1000 and 300 C. In some cases, it is preferable to carry out the polymerization in. presence of a catalyst capable of providing free radicals.
The polymerization reaction can be carried out in the absence or in the presence of an inert solvent. In the first case, the bis-imide or a mixture of the latter and the catalyst is heated, in a vessel, at: normal pressure, for the time necessary to obtain a polyamide resin in the form of a solid body. more or less homogeneous, infusible and insoluble.
The bis-imide, or the mixture, can also be heated in a mold under a pressure higher than normal pressure, which makes it possible to obtain a polyamide resin in the form of an infusible and insoluble body having a very homogeneous structure. .
In the second case, the bis-imide or the mixture thereof and the catalyst is dissolved in an inert solvent, then the resulting solution is brought to the boil. The resin: polyamide obtained by precipitation is in the form of an infusible and insoluble powder. As the solvent, for example, xylene, ben zene, triethylene glycol dimethyl ether, etc. can be used. Regarding the choice of bis-imide,
good results have been obtained with bis-imides in which the bivalent radical comprising at least one double bond is one of the two formulas

where R3 to R8 are hydrogens, or substituted or unsubstituted alkylene residues, or substituted or unsubstituted arylene residues, hydrogenated or not, these residues comprising one or more carbon atoms.
Among these bis-imides, use will preferably be made of an N, N'-bis-in @ ide of maleic acid, such as, for example, N, N'-ethylene-bis-maleic imide, N, N '-hexamethylen-bis-maleic imide, N, N'-rii-plienylene-bis-maleic imide, N, N'-p-phenylene-bis-maleic imide, N, N'-p, p '-diphenylmethane-bis-maleic imide, N, N'-p, p -diphenyl-ether-bis-imide rnaleic, N,
N'-diphenylsulfone-bis-maleic imide, N, N'-dicyclohexylmethane-bis-maleic imide, N, N'-a, a'-p-dimethylene-cy-clohexane-bis-maleic imide and N, N'-m-xylene-bis-maleic imide. It is also possible to use an N, N'-bisimide of citraconic acid or of tetrahydrophthalic acid.
As the catalyst, a peroxide can be used, such as, for example, dicumylperoxide and dibenzoylperoxide. It is also possible to use an azo derivative, such as, for example, azo-bis-isobutyronitrile. As for the amount of catalyst to be used, it should be chosen so that the molar ratio of the bis-imide and the catalyst is between 1: 0.001 and 1: 0.05.
The implementation of the process can be carried out, for example, in the following manner Example 1: 10 g of N, N'-m-phenylene-bis-imide maleic at 210 C for 30 minutes.
