Fig. 1 einen Querschnitt durch die Taschensonde,
Fig. 2 den Querschnittsverlauf der Taschensonde,
Fig. 3 eine Aufsicht auf die Taschensonde.
Dental periodontal probe for diagnosis and therapy of periodontal pockets
As a result of the increasingly spreading periodontal disease, special treatment methods have been developed for this very unpleasant condition. In particular, great attention is paid to the formation of gum tissue and bone pockets that occur in periodontal disease. On the one hand, the extent of these pockets must be precisely determined and, on the other hand, they must be periodically cleaned and treated, otherwise the destructive tissue processes such as shrinkage of the gums and pocket depressions continue to spread.
Periodontal probes made from nickel-plated chrome steel are used today to diagnose periodontal pockets. These usually have a millimeter graduation to measure the depth of the pockets.
However, the exact determination of the pocket depth is not always easy due to the rigidity and thickness of the usual probes. Pushing the probe forward onto the bottom of the pocket is painful, and sensitive scanning of the bottom of the pocket with the stiff steel instruments is hindered.
The subject of the present invention is a dental periodontal probe which is used not only for diagnostics but also for treating periodontal pockets and which does not have the disadvantages of the instruments used today for diagnosis.
According to the invention, the periodontal probe is characterized in that a tongue-shaped probe made of flexible plastic has a resilient, hollow-spherical attachment to be placed on a handle and notches at certain intervals to determine the depth of penetration of the probe into the pockets.
In the accompanying drawing, an exemplary embodiment of the dental periodontal probe according to the invention is shown. It shows:
1 shows a cross section through the pocket probe,
2 shows the cross-sectional profile of the pocket probe,
3 shows a plan view of the pocket probe.
The tongue-shaped probe 1, which is made of plastic, for example made of polyethylene or a similar tough but flexible material and has a thin lens-shaped cross section 2, is provided with a hollow spherical projection 3, which is used to place the probe on a handle that carries a ball, put on. The plastic probe has notches 4 which are arranged approximately at a distance of 3 mm and thus allow the depth of penetration of the probe into the gum and bone pockets to be read off precisely without difficulty. The ball probe can, for example, have a perforation 5 through which it is possible to introduce pasty or liquid medicinal substances into the periodontal pockets without difficulty and to wipe them off there or to deposit them with the pocket probe for some time.
Furthermore, a radio-opaque substance, for example tin or lead sulphate, can be added to the plastic probe during manufacture so that the probe can be made visible during the X-ray diagnosis.
One can imagine that several probes according to the invention are introduced around a tooth in order to then be able to precisely determine the course of the pocket floor during the X-ray exposure. Finally, the periodontal probe can also be produced in any desired shade using dyes.
The periodontal pocket probe, which will have a tongue length of about 15 mm, is extremely cheap to manufacture, and it is therefore only intended for one-time use.
With the inventive periodontal pocket probe and its holder, the dentist has a device in his hands to precisely determine the periodontal changes and, on the other hand, to make the treatment of the pockets much more sensitive and easier by introducing drugs.
The introduction of drugs with the probe can be significantly improved by inserting the periodontal probe into a vagina (not shown in detail). The vagina and probe work together like a syringe, for which the vagina has an opening approximately at its tip, from which the corresponding drug emerges under the effect of the insertion movement of the probe in the vagina. Of course, the sheath can also have lateral openings.
It should also be mentioned that, of course, the hollow spherical attachment for connecting the probe to the handle can be arranged on the latter and the connecting ball can be arranged on the probe.
