Description
Filler material for inert gas welding It is known to use bare additional wires made of unalloyed or alloyed steel for welding using protective gas, and it is also known that these wires must have a very good surface finish to secure the current transfer. To achieve a perfectly conductive surface, it has been proposed to provide such additional wires with a coating of copper or aluminum.
Since this metallic coating also has the task of improving the sliding ability in the feed rollers to the welding point, the copper coatings are often given preference over those made of aluminum. Another task of such metallic coatings is to avoid rusting during prolonged storage, or at least to delay them.
According to another proposal, which does not belong to the state of the art, such additional materials are to be provided with coatings made of bronze, particularly to improve the sliding properties of the metallic coating.
Although these coatings result in improved sliding properties in comparison to copper and aluminum coatings, they only prevent rusting in a very inadequate manner.
It has now been found that brass coatings are particularly advantageous in terms of current transfer, rust and sliding properties for welding in the protective gas if these coatings consist essentially of alpha brass, which may contain beta brass.
For example, apart from unavoidable impurities, such an alloy contains about 60% Cu and about 40% Zn. Such metallic coatings have proven themselves when welding in an inert protective gas such as argon or helium and in mixtures of these noble gases even when welding in protective gas containing pure carbon dioxide, e.g. B. in a mixture with noble gases and with smaller additions of oxygen, which are also used when welding in noble gases, is proven.
The invention thus provides additional materials for gas-shielded welding made of: unalloyed or alloyed steels with a metallic coating containing copper, and the invention consists in the metallic coating containing at least 90% alpha brass. The metallic coating can also contain up to 10% beta brass.
