Process for stabilizing polyethylene The present invention relates to a process for stabilizing polyethylene prepared by a low pressure polymerization process.
Olefins, and in particular ethylene, can be polymerized under low pressure in the presence of catalysts which are, in general, based on a compound of a polyvalent heavy metal.
It has been proposed to use as catalyst an oxygenated compound of chromium at least partially in the hexavalent state, associated with an inert support chosen from silica, alumina, zirconia and tuna (Belgian patent No. 530617).
It is also known to polymerize ethylene in the presence of a binary catalyst consisting of a compound of a transition metal and of a trialkyl derivative of aluminum (Belgian patent No. 533362).
Finally, the polymerization of olefins has been described in the presence of a complex ternary catalyst formed by reaction of three constituents chosen from: a) a metal, a hydride or an organometallic compound of metals of IVnle, Vine and VI-th groups of periodic table, b) an inorganic compound of a polyvalent metal having at least three valences and c) a halide of an element of the IIInle or the Vme group (Belgian patent No 547618). In the present report, this catalytic system will be designated by the general name: ternary catalyst.
The properties of polymers made by each of these processes differ in many aspects, both physical and rheological.
It has, however, been observed that all polyolefins have the drawback of degrading under the effect of oxidation phenomena which take place, for example, during molding operations, or subsequently, by oxidation in air. This degradation generally leads to a strong increase in the color and the fragility of the polyolefin article.
To overcome these drawbacks, compounds called stabilizers or antioxidants are added to the polymer, preferably after having subjected it to a purification cycle.
It is well known to use, as an antioxidant, a compound with a reducing function, for example an amine, and in particular a hydrazine derivative.
It has also been found that paraffinic polymers could be stabilized at high temperatures by adding an alkylsubstituted mono- or bisphenolic compound (Ind. Eng. Chem., 1949, 41, p. 1442-447).
Among the alkyl-substituted monophenolic compounds, particularly the trialkylsubstituted derivatives have been proposed, for example, 2.6 ditert.butyl.4. methylphenol (U.S. Patent No. 2625491).
Among the alkylsubstituted bisphenolic compounds, the use of dialkylphenol sulfides has been described, in particular, for example 4.4'thiobis (3.methyl.6. Tert.butylphenol) (United States Patent No. 2364338).
Other bisphenolic compounds, of similar structure, the use of which has also been proposed are 4.4'butylidene bis (3.methyl.6.tert.butylphenol) and 2.2'methylene bis (4.ethyl.6.tert. butylphenol).
Finally, the stabilization of the polyolefins prepared in the presence of catalysts with two constituents has been described, by adding thereto a certain amount of a triarylphosphine (French patent No. 1228779).
The licensee noted that the stabilizing effect of the antioxidants used varied greatly according to the type of polyethylene to which it was added, that is to say according to the catalytic system used during the polymerization of ethylene. It turns out, in fact, that stabilizers consisting of mono- or bisphenolic alkylsubstituted compounds, such as 4.4'thiobis (3.methyl.6.tert.butylphenol), which are suitable for stabilizing poly- olefins prepared in the presence of chromium oxide catalysts,
give poor results when used for stabilizing the obtained polyethylene in the presence of the ternary catalyst. It is observed in this case that the polyethylene takes on a very pronounced brownish tint.
Likewise, the addition of a triarylphosphine, in variable amounts, to the polyethylene prepared by a ternary catalyst, does not make it possible to stabilize the polymer in a satisfactory manner. It is noted, for example, that in this case, the induction period which precedes the phenomena of degradation by oxidation is doubled as much as possible, whereas in the case of effective stabilizers it can be a hundred times greater.
The licensee has developed a multi-component stabilization formula which has been found to be very effective in stabilizing the prepared polyethylene in the presence of the ternary catalyst. In this formula the respective effects of the constituents are accompanied by a synergistic effect.
The present process for stabilizing polyethylene prepared in the presence of a complex catalyst consisting of a) a metal, a hydride or an organometallic compound of metals of the IV-e, Vme and VI-e groups of the table periodic, b) a mineral compound of a polyvalent metal having at least three valences and c) a halide of an element of the III-e or of the V group,
consists in adding to the polyethylene a stabilizing composition comprising at least two constituents, the first of which is a triarylphosphine and the second a mono- or bisphenolic alkylsubstituted compound.
The surprising effect of the present invention resides in the fact that the claimed composition causes effective stabilization of the polyethylene prepared by the ternary catalyst while each of the two main constituents used separately gives very poor results.
Triarylphosphines are organic derivatives of phosphorus, of general formula
EMI0002.0033
wherein the groups R, R 'and R "are like or different monovalent aromatic radicals, for example the phenyl, naphthyl, anthracyl radicals or their corresponding substituted alkyl derivative.
A preferred triarylphosphine is triphenylphosphine.
Among the mono- or bisphenolic alkylsubstituted compounds which can be used according to the invention, preferred are 4.4'thiobis (3.methyl.6.tert. Butylphenol), 4A'butylidene bis (3.methyl.6.tert. butylphenol), 2.2'methylene bis (4.ethyl.6.tert. butylphenol) and 2.6.ditert.butyl.4.methylphenol.
In certain cases, the stabilizing effect of the composition can be further increased by adding to the triarylphosphine and to the alkyl-substituted mono- or bisphenol compound known stabilizers, for example hydrazine and / or calcium stearate.
A preferred stabilizing composition consists of triarylphosphine, an alkylsubstituted mono- or bisphenol compound, hydrazine and calcium stearate. Such a composition is generally used by adding to 1000 g of polyethylene from 0.1 to 1 g of triarylphosphine, from 0.1 to 0.5 g of the alkyl-substituted mono- or bisphenolic compound, from 0.1 to 0.5 g of hydrazine and 0.1 to 0.5 g of calcium stearate.
A particularly effective composition consists, for 1000 g of polyethylene, from 0.1 to 1 g of triphenylphosphine, from 0.1 to 0.5 g of 4.4'thio- bis (3.methyl. 6.tert.butylphenol), 0.1 to 0.5 g of hydrazine and 0.1 to 0.5 g of calcium stearate.
The composition can be incorporated into the polymer in a manner known per se, for example by impregnating the polymer in powder or grain with a solution of the stabilizing composition. Impregnation can be carried out either in a mixer or mill where the solvent is evaporated, or by calendering on heated rolls or by extrusion of a mixture of the polymer and the stabilizing composition.
Depending on the purification cycle which has been subjected to it, the polyethylene to be stabilized still contains greater or lesser quantities of residues of the final catalyst. These amounts can vary from 0.05 to 0.4 g of metal residues per kg of polyethylene. It appears that these catalytic residues have a great influence on the stability of the polymer. In general, a poorly cleaned polymer, that is to say still containing fairly large amounts of metal compounds, tends to deteriorate and degrade more rapidly than a practically pure polymer.
The amount of stabilizer to be added to the polymer will therefore vary depending on the degree of purification of the latter.
In the case of the present invention, the degree of purification of the polyethylene will influence not only the overall amount of the stabilizing composition to be added, but also the internal, qualitative and quantitative construction thereof.
It is possible to define which stabilizing composition will give the best results for a defined type of polyethylene, by subjecting stabilized samples to certain tests which make it possible, in a very short time, to estimate the long-term stability of these samples. .
For example, samples can be subjected to an oxygen absorption test at 180 C. This test is based on the finding that when polyethylene undergoes degradation at high temperature in the presence of air, absorption occurs. oxygen. This takes place when the polymer sample begins to degrade. The duration of the induction period preceding the onset of degradation can be measured. The longer it is, the more satisfactory the stability of the sample will be. We can therefore assess the quality of various stabilizing compositions added to the polymer by comparing the respective induction periods which are by convention expressed in minutes.
The principle of this test has been described by Meltser, Kelley and Goldey (J. Appl. Pol. Sci, 1 960, 111, 7, p. 84).
The thermal stability of a polymer sample can also be assessed by subjecting it to differential thermal analysis. Examination of the diagram obtained by this analysis makes it possible to determine the temperature corresponding to the start of the exothermic phenomenon of degradation.
Finally, to assess the increase in color which accompanies the degradation of a polymer, it is necessary to rely on an arbitrary method: one molds by injection, at 2500 C, polyethylene plates, 3 mm thick. , the coloring of which is determined by comparison with a reference scale. In this scale, the term 0 indicates a white sample, the term 5 a sample of brownish tint and the other terms for intermediate tints.
The examples which follow illustrate the present invention.
Example 1 The polymerization of ethylene was carried out in suspension in hexane at 750 C, in the presence of a ternary catalyst of composition T'Cl4 - Sn (C ,, H3) 4 - AIC13 The polymer obtained, after having undergone a purification cycle, contains 0.30 g / kg of catalytic residues and has an inherent viscosity measured at 1600 ° C. in tetralin and expressed in deciliters per gram of 2.80. The polyethylene was divided into eight samples.
Seven samples of the powdered polymer were incorporated with different stabilizing compositions. The samples were then subjected to the three tests which have been described and which made it possible for each of them to define the induction period, the temperature at the start of degradation and the colouration.
The results of the eight tests have been collated in Table I below, in which the compositions were calculated per 1000 g of polymer.

Finally, the hydrazine added to the ternary composition makes it possible to very appreciably reduce the coloration of the polyethylene. Tests 7 and 8 show that 4.4'butylidene bis (3.methyl.6.tert.butylphenol) has the same effects as 4.4'thiobis (3.methyl.6.tert.butylphenol).
Example 2 Ethylene was polymerized in the presence of the same catalyst but at a temperature of 801 ° C. After stripping, the polymer contains 0.32 g / kg of catalytic residues and has an inherent viscosity of 2.30. As in Example 1, stabilized polymer samples were subjected to the three tests already described. The results are collated in Table II, in which the compositions were calculated per 1000 g of polymer.

Examination of the results shows that in general conclusions identical to those of Example 1 can be drawn.
Example 3 Ethylene is polymerized at 800 ° C. in the presence of a ternary catalyst identical to that described in Example 1. The polymer is subjected to a purification cycle which makes it possible to bring back its catalytic residue content at 0.05 g / kg. This polyethylene, which has an inherent viscosity of 2.20, is divided into sixteen samples, fifteen of which are stabilized by means of various compositions.
After having subjected them to the three tests already described, the stabilizing properties of the compositions used are compared. The results are shown in Table II1 in which the compositions were calculated for 1000 g of polymer.

The results shown in this table confirm the conclusions reached by Examples I and II.
It is found that in the case of the stabilization of the polyethylene prepared in the presence of the ternary catalyst, 4.4'thiobis (3.methyl.6.tert.butylphenol) and triphenylphosphine, used alone, give poor results. One increases the coloration of the polymer, the other has practically no stabilizing effect. On the other hand, their simultaneous use confers great stability without improving the coloring (test 8).
In addition, in the case of the use of compositions containing both 4.4'thiobis (3.methyl.6.tert.bu- tylphenol), triphenylphosphine, calcium stearate and hydrazine (tests 9 and 10), a judicious dosage of these constituents makes it possible to achieve quite remarkable results (test 10).
Finally, tests 11 to 16 show that all the mono- or bisphenolic alkylsubstituted compounds react in the same way, to varying degrees.
