<EMI ID=5.1>

mercapto-3-propionique, mercapto-4-butyrique, thio-2-propionique, etc.

<EMI ID=20.1>
<EMI ID=21.1>
<EMI ID=22.1>
<EMI ID=23.1>
<EMI ID=24.1> <EMI ID=25.1>
<EMI ID=26.1>

In the main patent, organometallic compounds consisting of dimethyl-tin-bis (octyl thioalkanoates) have been described as stabilizers for plastics. On the other hand, in US Pat. No. 3,810,868, the Applicant has shown the utility, for the heat stabilization of plastics, of a whole series of other dimethyltin derivatives, in which this group is combined. with two ester-functional radicals. The advantage of this type of stabilizer is fully described in the main patent and in the aforementioned US patent.
The present invention results from the unexpected finding that even better results can be obtained if,
<EMI ID = 5.1>
added a certain proportion of the corresponding monomethyl-tin compound. On the other hand, as already indicated in the main patent, the content of the mixture of trimethylated tin derivative must be as low as possible, in any case less than 0.6%.
Thus, in accordance with the present invention, the improved stabilizer, based on dimethyl-tin-thioesters, is characterized in that it comprises a mixture of dimethyl compounds of the type

When it comes to stabilizing plastics, in particular polyvinyl chloride, intended for the packaging of foodstuffs, such as for example bottles, it is preferable that the mixture according to the invention contains approximately 24% of derivatives. monomethylated tin for approximately 76% of dimethylated compounds, the content of trimethyls being as low as possible, less than 0.6%.
In general, the modalities of application of the new stabilizer are those of which a detailed description is found in the main patent.
The following nonlimiting examples show the advantage of the mixtures of the invention. In these examples, samples prepared from 100 parts by weight of commercial polyvinyl chloride ("Geon 103 Ep-8"), 0.5 stearyl alcohol and 2 parts stabilizers were used. These materials were mixed between two cylinders of a laboratory mill, at 170 [deg.] C, for 5 minutes, until perfect homogenization. Sheets were thus formed 0.6 mm thick, samples of which were heated in an oven at 175 [deg.] C for 20 to 120 minutes; the colour

On the other hand, the plastic mixture passed through a press where it was subjected to 150 kg / cm2 for 50 minutes at 180 [deg.] C under a thickness of 1 mm: the color of the sample, thus treated, is indicated in the last vertical column of the table below. In

are much stronger than those of leaves stabilized with the mixture a + b + c (test n [deg.] 1 and 2). In fact, no coloration appears until 60 minutes of heating at 175 [deg.] C, when the polyvinyl chloride is stabilized with a mixture of monomethyl-
<EMI ID = 20.1>
ble after 60 minutes with the dimethyl derivative alone and it is even very strong from the twentieth minute with the monomethyl compound.
On the other hand, the inferiority of the results, obtained with the products d to g, proves the importance of the thioalkanoic anion in the organotin compound molecule used.
A similar improvement, very marked, was observed when the stabilizer included other alkyls instead of methyls in the above-mentioned products. Thus, for example, the joint use of dibutyl-tin-bis (iaooctyl thioglycolate) and monobutyl-tin-tris (isooctyl thioglycolate) leads to much weaker colorations than do the two constituents, dibutylated and monobutylated, taken separately. Nevertheless, it is the methylated stannic derivatives which lead to results which are much superior to the others.
Numerous results, showing the influence of the relative proportions of the constituents of the mixtures according to the invention, as well as other factors, are described in the priority documents of the present application; they can constitute interesting documentation from a technical point of view, but are not reproduced here, because the above clearly defines the invention.
The excellent results, to which the mixtures of the organotin compounds according to the invention lead, can be explained by the fact that, when hot, the disproportionation of a dimethyl derivative leads to the formation of the corresponding derivatives, trimethylated and monomethylated, the trimethylated being harmful. . This phenomenon is governed by the equilibrium reaction:
<EMI ID = 21.1>
<EMI ID = 22.1>
being the numbers of the molecules corresponding to equilibrium. The equilibrium constant:
<EMI ID = 23.1>
<EMI ID = 24.1> <EMI ID = 25.1>
<EMI ID = 26.1>
It can be seen that the increase in M, that is to say of monomethyl components, shifts the equilibrium towards the left, towards the increase of D and decrease of T. Thus, the addition of monomethyl compounds to the derivative dimethylated results in the lowering of the amount of trimethylated products at equilibrium; the latter being harmful, the results are improved by lowering its concentration.
On the other hand, the rate of formation of the trimethyl derivative, according to the equilibrium equation given above, is of the form
