Method for attaching a tear-off flap provided with at least one opening to a wall part of a metal container, metal container manufactured according to this method and pressing system for carrying out the method
The present invention relates to a method for attaching a tear-off tab provided with at least one opening to a wall part of a metal container without destroying the continuity of this wall part, in particular for food and drink, in which method a hollow projection is formed in the wall part through an opening in the pull tab is pushed through and then deformed in such a way that parts of the projection overlap the edge of the opening,
as well as a metal container produced by this method with a tear-off tab and a pressing system for carrying out the method.
The invention aims. the creation of a process which does not require any fasteners and therefore does not affect the continuity of the sheet.
In the past, hollow rivets were used to attach a metal member provided with at least one opening with a different Metaügl. ied to connect, but with such rivet connections the rivets for the purpose of their axial. The compression has been shortened by blows or pressure and the metal that forms the rivet walls has been turned inside out. If such a procedure is used for an aluminum container with thin walls, then when the rivets are turned inside out, the risk arises that the rivet connection becomes soft and the airtightness of the container becomes questionable.
The inventive method is characterized in that to deform the projection while at least approximately leaving its axial length its end transverse wall pressed together and thus brings the material of this transverse wall to flow and to form a bundle edge which is around the edge of the opening of the Pull tab extends.
The invention further comprises a metal container with pull tabs produced according to the method.
The pressing system for carrying out the method is characterized in that pressing tools are arranged for forming a closing transverse wall of the projection corresponding in its thickness to that of the tear tab and for pressing this wall together, with one of the tools designed as an anvil for insertion into the hollow projection and is provided to support the inner end transverse wall, for the purpose of moving the material of the end transverse wall outwards by impact stress and around a one-piece, outwardly directed, circumscribing.
To form the border edge and thus to grasp the edge part defining the opening in this tear-open flap and to place it between the flap and de. To create a connection in the wall part.
The inventions are then explained with reference to the exemplary embodiments shown in the figures. It shows :

26 shows a longitudinal section through a section of pressing tools, showing a preferred form of connection between tabs and tear strips.
1 shows a preferred embodiment in which a can 20 made of a metal alloy has, at at least one of its ends, a closure lid 22 which is also made of an alloy. Such cans or containers are made of an alloy of aluminum or steel, the construction being influenced by the product for which the can is intended. The lid 22 is notched along a pair of lines 24 in order to form a tear strip 25 and to form the circumference of the lid in a spiral shape in such a way that the entire lid is separated from the can by pulling off the tear strip.
The tear strip 25 has a defining end 26 (FIG. 2). One end of a thin tear tab 28 is with. the massgobenden end of the Aufneissstreifens 25 and serves as a handle bar. licbes element for grasping and pulling away, the tear strip.
The tear-open flap 28 is normally connected to the outer surface of the can lid when surfaces lie one on top of the other, which does not impair normal stacking of the cans for transport or shipping. In the embodiment shown, the tab 28 has an opening 30 with an edge 31, which is designed as a straight line and has a predetermined breaking line in the immediate vicinity of the relevant end of the tear strip.
It is clear from this that a force lifting the free end of the tab causes the tab to bend along the line defined by the edge 31 of the opening 30. Therefore, to remove the lid, the tab is bent upward away from the surface of the lid.
It serves as a handle for separating the tear-off strip from the lid and therefore the lid from the can by means of a slight tensile force which is applied to the cloth. The tab 28 also has an opening 32, as can be seen from FIG. 10, which is designed in such a way that it allows a one-piece design of the can lid. As can be seen from FIG. 11, the opening 32 is encompassed by means of a corrugated rib 34 which reinforces the edge of the opening. It can also be seen from FIG. 11 that the inner peripheral part 35 of the tab, which comprises the opening 32, is conical.
In the finished cover 22 according to FIGS. 1 and 2, the one-piece design comprises a protruding protrusion 36 which is formed in the area of the massage end 26 of the tear strip 25 and protrudes through the opening 32 of the tab 28, is flattened and pressed outwards, to form a flange-like outer portion 36a overlying the top surface of the tab. Pulls in order to connect the edge part of the flap bordering the opening 32 to the tear-off strip 25.
The resulting connection between the flap 28 and the lid 22 is best seen in FIG. 14, from which it can be seen that the inner peripheral wall 38 of the protrusion 36 is outwardly in close connection with the outer surface of the inner peripheral part 35 of the opening of the flap 28 is pressed.
14 clearly shows that the transverse or closing transverse, an, d 37 of the wart 36 is spread out and flattened to form an outer part 36a similar to a beaded edge, which overlaps the edge part that surrounds the opening 32 to at least this Opening 32 comprehensive edge part to connect firmly to the underlying deck in a compulsory manner.
In the preferred embodiment, the protrusion 36 is formed in two process steps, with a relatively wide circular depression 40 being formed in the cover in the first step. This recess 40 can be seen in Fig. 3, while Fig. 4 shows how. the recess 40 is pressed with the aid of two cooperating pressing tools. One of the punches 42 has a recess 45 which is circular in cross section and which is dimensioned in terms of circumference and depth such that the desired recess can be produced.
The other pressing tool, the anvil 44, has a dome-like part 46 which presses the metal of the cover 22 into the recess 45. Because of the special size and shape of the forming surfaces of the punch 42 and the anvil 44, the metal thickness in that part of the cover in which the recess 40 is located will have decreased somewhat.
The recess 40 is significantly larger than the wart 36 in all its dimensions.
In the second stage, as can be seen from FIG. 6, the recess 40 is pushed between an upper and a lower pressing tool 48 and 50, respectively.
The upper pressing tool 48 has a flat decisive annular end surface 52 and a central recess 54 in the shape and dimensions of the desired outer or upright wall of the bug, the recess 54 being dimensioned such that the upper surface of the transverse wall 37 does not touch the nipple 36 and is restricted in its form. The lower pressing tool 50 has a flat work surface 55 and d carries a projection 56, the. serves as a dome, with this tool in terms of shape and dimension the interior of the Gewüns. real wart.
When the two pressing tools 48 and 50 close, they transform the relatively wide recess g 40 into the narrow, steeply shouldered wart 363, the side walls of this wart being practically perpendicular to the cover plane of the cover 22. As can be seen from Fig. 5, the wart 36 has an oval shape, the shape and dime. The nsion is such that the wart fills the aforementioned opening 32 of the flap 28 (FIG. 10).
During the pness process, which is completed through the use of the pressing tools 48 and 50, these tools having the type of customary constriction punches, the metal of the wall of the previously created depression will flow in parts radially inward, which results in a thickening - the extreme wall part, which generally extends over the central part, which is not limited by the surfaces of the pressing tools. In other words, it will be the wall thickness of the. entire transverse wall 37 of the wart 36 increased.
After the protrusion 36 has been formed in the cover 22 at the point shown in FIG. 5, the cover can hardly be notched for the purpose of forming the tear strip 25 with the protrusion 36 at its relevant end, as can be seen in FIG. In order to form the tear strip, the cover 22 can be placed on a fixed metal support 60 in the manner shown in FIG. 9, after which the metal is notched helically along the line 24 with a Kelib tool 62, as can be seen in FIG is.
If the thickness of the cover 22 is 0.2 mm in terms of size, the metal can be notched to a depth of 0.25 mm. Understandably, however, the depth of the notch depends to a certain extent on the metal or metal alloy used and on the product which is to be kept in the can.
In the next station, according to a preferred embodiment, the cover 22 is placed on a lower pressing tool 64 in the position shown in FIG. 12, an anvil 65 of the lower pressing tool 64 fitting snugly into the interior of the wart 36.
The tab 28 is placed on the cover 22 in such a way that the protrusion 36 protrudes through the opening 32 of the tab. The upper punch 66 is then actuated and, in cooperation with the lower pressing tool 64, reduces the thickness of the wall 37 of the wart 36. The upper punch 66 consists of a piston 68 and a spring-loaded, annular punch 70, the piston 68 slide, is arranged in an opening 72 of the punch. The cross section of the piston 68 and the bore 72 corresponds to the shape of the protrusion 36, but the embodiment according to FIG. 14 is slightly wider than the protrusion.
The bore 72 ends in a counterbore or recess 74, which is dimensioned such that the rib 34 of the tab 28 is exposed, as can be seen in FIG. 14.
In this operation, the punch 70 moves against the lower pressing tool 64, as can be seen in FIG. 13, and, beforehand, presses the flap firmly onto the lid 22 in the area which includes the nipple 36. During this tightening of the flap 28 on the cover 22, the piston or pistons 68 are moved at high speed by striking the transverse wall 37 of the boss 36 in order to drive the wall 37 against the anvil 65 of the lower pressing tool 64.
As a result of this anvil blow, the metal of the transverse wall 37 of the wart 36, as indicated in FIG. 14, is pressed laterally outward, and the metal flows in a practically liquid phase against the inwardly directed surfaces of the rib 34 and into a connection with it these (Fig. 14).
The impact force should be large enough to drive the metal of the wall 37 of the protrusion 36 radially outward in all directions, as indicated by the arrows 75 in FIG. 14, in order to thereby create the outer portion similar to a closure flange. il 36a to form which the. encompasses the part of the tab delimiting the edge of the opening 32 and has a wall thickness which is greater than the transverse wall 37, which has now become thinner.
Since the height of the wart 36 is slightly greater than the thickness of the flap 28, there is a tendency for the anvil. The stroke of the piston 68, if this piston is somewhat wider, than the protrusion 36, the side wall 38 of which has to be widened outwards and to bring it into pressure connection with the outer surface of the conical peripheral part 35 of the tab. This connection, understandably, increases the clamping effect of the flange-like outer part 36a and produces a mechanical connection which unites the tab 28 with the lid 22 of the can in an inevitable manner.
Practice has shown that the beveling or widening of the peripheral part 35, which surrounds the opening 32 of the tab, is furthermore advantageous, since it prevents the tendency of the edge surrounding the opening 32 to close the peripheral walls 38 of the wart 36 in the final pressing process pierce or, as shown in Fig. 14, to tear.
Although the rib 34 reinforces the joint and provides additional rigidity to the tab 28 in the region of the opening 32 in some applications of the present invention, it has been found that this corrugated rib 34 can be omitted. In this case, the counterbore or recess 74 of the annular punch 70, which is shown in part in FIG. 17, is reduced. In this embodiment, the pressing operations are the same as those of the embodiment described and the flange-like outer part 36a overlaps the edge part of the opening 32, as can be seen from FIG. 17, the wall 38 with the inner converging peripheral part 35 of the opening 32 is connected by pressing (Fig. 14).
15 shows a cover 22 'which has the same structure as the cover 22 of FIGS. 1 and 2. The opening of the tab 28' and the protrusion 36 ', which surrounds the edge part of the opening, have the shape of a Circle with one segment left standing. So is the shape of the wart 36 'as well. that of the wart 36 is not circular in order to inevitably prevent a rotational movement of the flap around the wart. It is of course possible to make the wart circular or to give it some other shape.
16 shows process steps especially suitable for mass production in the form of a flow diagram. The first cut winds an elongated sheet 76 made of aluminum alloy into spinal-like parts. cut and pushed step by step through a large number of pressing tools which press lid molds 78 into the sheet metal without separating these lid shapes from the sheet metal. In the next step, a multiplicity of punches of the embodiment shown in FIG. 4 form depressions 40 in the lid molds 78.
In the third step, the depressions 40 are pressed into steep-shouldered lugs 36 with the aid of a large number of pressing tools shown in FIGS. 6 and 7. In the next step, a plurality of molding tools notch tear strips 25 into the cover mold 78.
In the meantime, tab shapes 84 are pressed in one or more steps into a metal strip 82 which, for example, can have a thickness of 0.38 mm. Each flap shape has the aforementioned opening 30 in order to facilitate a clean bending of the flap and furthermore a lip-reinforced opening 32 as described, in order to receive the steep-shouldered wart 36 of the lid 22. In the fifth processing step of the strip 76, the tabs 84 are punched out of the strip 82, so that the desired tabs 28 result, which are delivered to the lugs 36 of the sheet metal 76 by the punching tools, as shown by dashed lines 85 in FIG. 16 .
In the 6th step, the lugs 36 turn by means of a multiplicity of pressing tools, as shown in FIGS. 12, 13 and 14, pressed flat and widened in order to connect the tabs 28 to the tear strips 25. In the next step, the lid shapes 78 are punched out of the sheet metal 76 so that individual free lids 22 result.
Finally, the lids 22 are subjected to an edge-curling process with the aid of known means 86, which lid edges curl with a view to the application of the lids to cylindrical can bodies.
How. Explained with reference to FIGS. 1-17, a novel method for fastening a first sheet-like element on a second sheet-like element, for example a rag or key, on a can wall or a lid is created, as well as a new article resulting therefrom. When looking at the illustrated embodiments, it becomes apparent that the second panel-like element, the can lid, is previously formed with a generally conical depression or a drop-like deformation at a predetermined location on the lid, after which this depression or
the conical deformation is significantly reduced in all its dimensions and pressed into a steep-edged projection in the form of a wart, the height of which is greater than the thickness of the first element., d. H. of the rag or key, and de. r has a cross-sectional size and shape which are approximately the same as the size and shape of the opening in the first element.
This design allows the first element to approach the second. bring, with the wart protruding through the opening of the first element. At this stage of the process, the wart has a transverse wall, the thickness of which is greater than that of the wall of the originally pressed depression.
Due to the protrusion protruding through the opening, in order to press enough material of the wall outwards and still rigidly support the wall on the first element, the thickness of the transverse wall can be reduced under pressure. This forms a ring-shaped flange, the wall thickness of which is greater than the thin transverse wall thickness and which overlaps and holds the edge of the opening in order to create a positive connection between the elements. The thickness of the flange increases progressively from a point within the opening edge. The thickness increases progressively up to the upright wall part of the wart, which is connected to the wall of the opening.
Taking into account the above explanations, the disclosed invention is explained in greater detail with reference to FIGS. 18-26.
18 shows a graphic reproduction of an enlarged micro-representation of a cross-section through the pressed recess 40. It can be seen from this that, by choosing the wall thickness of the recess 40, the wall thickness of the cover 22 has decreased to a small extent relative to the original thickness Depression is kept roughly the same size everywhere. In a preferred embodiment, if, for example, an aluminum alloy is used, as is often used for can material, it has been found that the wall thickness of the pressed recess is the same over its entire extent and only slightly less than the thickness of the lid 22 .
Specifically taking into account the physical characteristics of the recess 40, it can be seen that the now preferred, illustrated shape is designed such that the recess is defined in the longitudinal section by a linear segment 100, which extends annularly around and evenly into a curved one or a curved apex part 102 passes over. It is of course clear that the total sectional area, as can be seen from the sectional dimensions in FIG. 18, is significantly larger than the subsequently pressed wart shown in FIGS. 19 and 20.
It zei It turned out that if the method described above is applied to aluminum can lids which have a commercial sheet metal thickness of 0.2 mm, the depression 40 with a maximum deformation at the curved apex, as represented by the arrow height A in FIG is approximately 2¸-3 times as high as the resulting vertical height of the wart.
Reference is now made to FIG. 22, which shows the interplay of pressing tools 104 and 106 which, in terms of construction, correspond to the elements shown in FIG. The embodiment according to FIG. 22, however, shows the tools in an inter mediate stage during the. Eating of the wart. Taking into account the fact that the recess 40 was formed with a slightly smaller wall thickness than the cover 22, the person skilled in the art will immediately recognize that the ring-shaped, somewhat thicker, somewhat thinner Dekolteilteil acts from the braking member and an outward flow of the metal Prevents depression during compression molding.
As can be seen from FIG. 22, when the pressing tools 104 and 106 are closed, the metal of the recess 40 is therefore pressed into the conventional, shell-shaped mold 108 and the material of the recess is reduced to a smaller volume, which is determined by the recess of the pressing tool , huddled together. In addition, a spring-loaded, annular pressing or pressure member 110, as is common in most pressing processes, can be used, lowered onto the cover 22 before the closing movement of the pressing tool 104 takes place, for the purpose of
to bring the lid 22 into the correct position and to hold its metal.
After the pressing tools 104 and 106 have been closed in a position which corresponds to that of the elements according to FIG. 6, the waves of the intermediate stage) according to FIG. 22 forcibly disappear and the metal of the recess is generally applied towards the center thereof heaped and flows into the recess of the upper pressing tool 104 to form the wart.
The recess in the upper press tool is much deeper than the counter profile in the lower press element, so that the free flow of the metal is not hindered in the entire part of the recess, which ultimately forms the transverse wall d of the projection. This relatively smooth, even flow is not only achieved by pressing, but is a consequence of the pre-flattening effect of the circular ring.
19 and 20 likewise show an enlarged micro-reproduction of a cross-sectional shape of a typical steep-walled oval-shaped wart, which is formed from the recess 40. For the purpose of clear understanding, the wart is generally identified here by the reference number 112. The transverse wall 114 of the nipple 112 will for practical reasons generally have the same thickness. Furthermore, as a result of the metal flow, which was described on the occasion of the deformation into a wart, the Quenw. and 114 significantly thicker than the wall of recess 40 ..
Depending on the metal used, the wall 114 can not only be thickened, but also slightly arched, as can be seen in the cross section through the formation of a corresponding surface of the counter-pressing tool to the lower pressing tool.
It is evident that the thickening of the wall 114 must be assessed with regard to the wall thickness of the recess 40, as well as the original thickness of the can lid 22, and that the thickness of the re-formed wall 114 depends on the can material used, as well as the. Initial thickness of the cover 22 can change to a small extent.
Thus, in a preferred form, the nipple 112 comprises a hollow member which is bent out of the general plane of the cover 22 and has a vertical length which, measured from the top surface of the cover 22 to the top surface of the transverse wall 114, is greater than the thickness of the The aforementioned tab 28, in particular in the edge area in front of its opening 32. Subsequently, reference is made to FIG. 26, which roughly reproduces the deformation process shown in FIG. 17 and a typical type of deformation for producing the. The wart shows how the key or rag is attached to the can lid.
In this embodiment, a lower press tool 120 with a. flat, annular bearing ring support surface 122 is used, which supports the lower surface of the can lid 22 during the Pressez process. The pressing tool 120 additionally has an anvil 124 which protrudes upwards from the surface 122 and is dimensioned such that it fits precisely into the pre-pressed protrusion, as described above, and thus a clean support for the transverse wall during the pinning process represents.
A key or rag 126 is again placed on the wart in such a way that it protrudes through the opening 128. The rim bordering the opening may be bevelled or dimensioned 130 and 132 to avoid peak stresses or cutting of the metal of the can lid during the completion of the flap fastening process. Here, too, a conventional pressure ring 134, which is the same as the annular punch 70 according to FIG. 17, is arranged in such a way that it surrounds or includes a punch 136. It is used to press the parts to be joined together.
As can be seen, the ring 134 is provided with an annular recess 138, which is dimensioned such that there is sufficient play for the flowing metal during the corresponding deformation described without this metal being disturbed by the recess through contact. Furthermore, in a special embodiment, the upper surface 140 of the anvil 124 is made slightly convex, while the deformation surface 142 of the punch 136 is configured in front of, preferably as a plane arranged perpendicular to the direction of movement of the punch.
As can be seen, the transverse surface of the anvil 124 is approximately the same in terms of dimensions as the transverse surface of the press tool or punch 136.
When using the shown in Fig. 2-6; As described and explained above in relation to the earlier method steps, the punch 136 is brought into contact with the transverse wall 114, while the latter is trimmed by the anvil 124 and preferably higher than the upper surface of the flap 126. When deformed by the punch 136, this presses the material of the wall 114 radially outwards in an overlapping connection with the upper surface of the tab 126. In this way, there is an inevitable interlocking between the tab or key and the can lid.
A special, unique result is brought about in the above-described process step in the sense of; than bending or compressive stresses caused by the deformation of the connection in the ringför-shaped side wall 144 are substantially reduced or practically eliminated.
A clean and positive connection between the flap and the lid is produced, which connection has sufficient strength to enable the lid to be removed as it is cleared. and to avoid unintentional separation of the flap / cover connection or a connection break, despite the fact that the cover material, which can be made economically for the intended purpose, is relatively, thin and, for example, only 0.2 mm.
Let us now return to FIG. 21, which again shows a reproduction of a drawing of an enlarged cross-section from a microphotograph after the joining operation has been carried out, showing that the thickness of the transverse wall 114 has decreased, which is largely due to the outward migration of its metal r, en is. It is also noted that the dimension B in FIG. 19 and the dimension C in FIG. 21 are approximate. are the same, which indicates the fact that during the joining operation the annular collapse of the column wall 148 as well as the introduction of compressive and bending stresses into it have been avoided.
In other words, the folding of the wall part of the wart protruding over the flap has been eliminated, which prevents the material at the outer annular end of the flange 146 from breaking.
As can now be understood, the deformation force has preferably served to press the metal outwards and thus to create the encircling bead 146 which surrounds the. Opening overlaps. The wall 148, as a result of the manufacture of the hollow flange 146, as shown in the section, is generally curved with flange 146, lid 22 and inner column wall 148 including a re-entrant portion which. the edge of the flap or key that delimits the opening.
In the preferred embodiment, the transverse wall 114 should not be pressed thinner than the value that is achieved by the score lines in the cover 22 as described earlier.
In terms of a practical teaching on technical action, it should be noted that the deformation force must be carefully controlled. This is particularly true when the can lid is made of relatively high-ductility metal, as is the case with many aluminum alloys normally used in can manufacture.
If the pressing pressure is too low, the metal is not pressed radially outward enough and it is not possible to achieve a clean bundle edge connection. On the other hand, too high a pressing pressure can increase the radial flow of the metal so much that the flap connection is no longer optimal.
FIG. 21 shows a typical, optimal quality crimped connection. It can be seen from this that the wall thickness includes the outward facing. The flange edge 146 is essentially greater than the thickness of the transverse wall 114. In fact, the flange wall, as well as the wall 148 of the wart, have become thicker as a result of the meta-flow caused by the deformation force.
Fig. 23 shows an alternative embodiment which is used for certain expenses. In this a lower pressing tool 160 is arranged with an upwardly projecting anvil 162 which acts in the manner described above. A pressure ram or piston 164 in turn serves to effect the deformation. The piston 164 is, however, in addition to its deformation surface 166 which cooperates with the anvil surface 168 to cause the metal to flow outwardly, with a pair of opposing approximately linearly downwardly projecting stops 170 and 172.
Here, too, a pressure or press ring 174 can be provided in order to encircle the piston 164.
If, in this embodiment, the transverse wall 114 is deformed in the manner described above, the result is the outward flow of the metal. The presence of the stops 170 and 172 on opposite sides of the connection prevents the metal from flowing outwards, so that the material flow forms thickened strips 176 and 178 in these areas of the connection. The strips 176 and 178 normally extend approximately parallel along opposite sides of the connection and act as reinforcing members for the stud connection, which is particularly beneficial during the opening of the can.
From this point of view, it is advantageous to have the strips 176 and 178 approximately parallel to the direction of movement of the
Rag while tearing the tape on
Form cover.
It is also possible to interpret the statements with regard to FIG. 23 as an alternative to the previous description, which depends on considerations such as the connection size and the original thickness of the starting cover material. A typical drawing reproduction of an enlarged photomicrograph of the structure as it occurs during the molding operation according to FIG. 23 is shown in FIG.
In FIG. 25, which shows a detail from an enlarged representation of a cover member with a complete connection, a tab 180 is shown which has an approximate longitudinal axis 182. In the cover 186, a notch 184 is pressed against the completed connection 188 on the side which lies against the handle part 189 of the tab 180. Furthermore, the strip 180 is provided with a nose 190 which is in the immediate vicinity of part of the notch 184. In addition, the nose 190 is so far removed from the connection 188 that it serves as a force pivot point during the opening.
There, understandably, the handle part 189 of the strip 180 from Han. is lifted, the action of the force is in the longitudinal axis 182 and the force is directed against the rotating nose 190. The immediate juxtaposition of the notch. 184 and the connection 188 brings about a high concentration of forces at the point of intersection of the axis 182 and the notch 184 and thus forms the start of a break, whereby the removal of the cover can easily be completed.
If desired, the tab 180 can be formed with stripes 192 to provide additional rigidity to the second class tremor represented by the tab.
The inventive concept described here can be used from more specific points of view in connection with a closed container which has at least one wall provided with a tear strip. This strip is. defined by lines of reduced material thickness. At its decisive end is a small tab by means of a one-piece, by mechanical interlocking with respect to the one opening in one.
End of the flap bordering the edge effected connection attached, the flap. n forms a handle-like member which, when grasped by the consumer, enables the user to separate the tear strip from the wall and to create an opening in the wall.
