Process for the production of asymmetric dialkylhydrazines
by catalytic hydrogenation of dialkylnitrosamines
One of the well-known routes for preparing unsymmetrical dialkylhydrazines consists in carrying out the hydrogenation of the corresponding dialkylnitrosamines in accordance with the following reaction scheme:
EMI1.1
where Rt and Ra represent hydrocarbon radicals.
Despite the extreme simplicity of this reaction scheme, the reduction of the dissymmetric dialkylnitrosamines to dialkoylhydrazines constitutes a very delicate operation since the following side reactions can under certain conditions become predominant:
EMI1.2
Until relatively recently, only reduction techniques other than catalytic hydrogenation had made it possible to limit, with some success, the two above side reactions.
These processes, although leading on the whole to obtaining acceptable yields, nevertheless present a certain number of drawbacks, among which the cost of the reduction operation (raw materials and implementation) should be mentioned. the complexity of the equipment resulting in a very high cost price.
In order to try to escape these drawbacks, and although the first attempts at catalytic hydrogenation of asymmetric dialkylnitrosamines generally ended in failure due to the predominance of side reactions, efforts have been made to perfect the application of the techniques. rigorously catalytic hydrogenation.
The research work carried out in this direction has resulted in the publication of new processes, among which we can cite: - catalytic hydrogenation in liquid phase in
presence of precious metals divided, deposited or
not on supports, such as platinum, palladium,
rhodium and iridium (French patent N
1160629,1201159 and 1166266); -catalytic hydrogenation in liquid phase and in
presence of Raney nickel as a catalyst
(French patent Nos. 1160629 and 1258548).
Despite the progress presented by these attempts to apply various techniques for the catalytic hydrogenation of asymmetric dialkylnitrosamines, the licensee's experience has shown her that the results obtained are not decisive for the following reasons: a) the yields of dialkylhydrazines dissymmetric
ques announced by the authors are sometimes mediocre
cres and particularly when using nickel
Raney's as a catalyst; b) there is never any mention of the service life
of these catalysts while experience shows
that these lifetimes under indi
quées are very short. This aspect of the question
is of paramount importance, since the cost
of the catalytic reduction operation is intimate
ment related to said lifespan.
The present invention relates to a process for manufacturing unsymmetrical dialkyl hydrazines by reduction of dialkylnitrosamines, in liquid phase, with hydrogen, characterized in that an electrolyte consisting of a salt or a metal hydroxide soluble in said medium is added to the reaction medium, the reaction being carried out in the presence of Raney nickel obtained by caustic attack of Ni-Al alloys.
According to particular embodiments, the Raney nickel obtained after chemical attack of the Ni-A1 alloy is subjected to dehydrogenation by particular electrochemical treatment.
The starting Ni-Al alloys preferably correspond to the composition:
Or. 40 to 55
A1. 60 to 38
Co. 0 to 1
Fe. 0 to 6
The initial reaction medium advantageously consists either of pure dialkylnitrosamine or of an aqueous solution of dialkylnitrosamine, the weight content of which can vary within wide limits, and is usually between 20 and 40%.
The above reaction medium can be made alkaline by adding a hydroxide of an alkali metal such as potassium, sodium or litham or of a soluble metal hydroxide other than an alkali metal, namely the hydroxides of the metals. alkaline earth metal, or soluble metal salts such as alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or heavy metal salts, without this enumeration being limiting, in an amount such that after dissolution the reaction medium contains between 0.001 and 5 moles of electrolyte per dm3 and preferably 0.1 mole per dm3.
Raney nickel is preferably obtained by caustic attack of a Ni-Al alloy passing through an AFNOR modulus 26 sieve. It is first subjected to a first attack with a caustic soda solution at 250 grams per liter in an amount such that the weight of pure dissolved caustic soda is equal to the weight of alloy used. During this attack, the temperature is maintained at 100 C.
After decantation, the catalyst can be subjected to a second sodium attack under the same conditions. When the attack is complete, the sodium solution can be removed and the catalyst washed with copious amounts of water.
In a first variant of the process, the Raney nickel thus obtained is finally subjected to a more or less complete dehydrogenation by electrochemical means, according to French patent Na 1303070 and its certificate of addition No 81914, Process for activating a catalyst , which consists in placing the metal against an unassailable anode within an alkaline electrolyte and in passing an electric current of less than 500 milliamperes / cm2 through it. The dehydrogenation treatment can be carried out, as a variant, according to French patent No. 1301338, and its certificate of addition No. 81894, Process for obtaining metals containing an adjustable quantity of hydrogen,
which consists in desorbing the hydrogen contained by immersing the nickel in a region of an electrolysis cell in such a way that current lines pass through it without being in contact with one or other of the electrodes.
In a second variant of the process, the starting Ni-A1 alloy meets the general composition given above and more particularly the following:
Ni 47.5
Co 0.5
Fe 3

This alloy, passing through the AFNOR modulus 26 sieve, is subjected to a first attack with a caustic soda solution at 250 g / liter, in an amount such that the weight of dissolved sodium hydroxide is equal to the weight of the alloy used. . During this attack the temperature is maintained at 100o C.
After decantation, the catalyst is subjected to a second sodium attack, under the same conditions.
When the attack is complete, the sodium solution is removed and the catalyst is washed at least ten times with plenty of water, after which this catalyst is ready to be used without any other prior treatment.
If the Raney nickel thus obtained is not used immediately, or if after having operated for a certain time its use is temporarily interrupted for any reason, it is preserved by immersion in an aqueous solution of a hydroxide of an alkali metal, a solution in which the alkali hydroxide content is between 50 and 500 grams per liter and more usually close to 250 grams per liter.
The catalyst is used in proportions such as
catalyst the weight ratio is included
reaction medium between 0.001 and 0.50, and usually oscillates between 0.05 and 0.1. The dialkylnitrosamine catalyst weight ratio is between 0.001 and 1, and normally oscillates between 0.15 and 0.5.
The hydrogen pressure is less than 50 atmospheres and usually approaches 30 atmospheres.
The temperature is between -200 C and + 50 "C and usually around + 10 C.
Stirring of the reaction medium is sufficiently effective to ensure good contact between the three phases, liquid, solid and gas.
Thanks to the process according to the invention, it is possible to carry out with a high yield the catalytic reduction of the asymmetric dialkylnitrosamines in the liquid phase under excellent economic conditions both with regard to the materials employed and the lifetime of the catalyst, and with a very simplified apparatus.
The following examples indicate different modes of operating the process and the catalyst according to the invention, and demonstrate the advantages thus acquired over other prior techniques.

The autoclave was equipped with a back and forth stirring system in a direction perpendicular to its axis and allowed 220 beats per minute.
The temperature was raised to + 10o C and the pressure to 40 atmospheres by injection of hydrogen. During the operation which took place at a temperature equal to + 10 C, the pressure varied between 30 and 40 atmospheres.
Under these conditions, the catalytic reduction time was close to 20 hours. After reaction, the mixture obtained was distilled in order to recover the asymmetric dimethylhydrazine. The yield of di-methylhydrazine, which is asymmetrical relative to the di-methylnitrosamine used, amounted to 87.4 / o.
