Calculating Device Attempts have already been made to accommodate an add and subtract device in a pen.
In a patent filed in Switzerland, it has been proposed to wind on a cylindrical surface a stylus device of the well known type. This device has the drawback that after having maneuvered a bar using the stylus, it is necessary to turn the device in the left hand by which it is held in order to be able to maneuver the bar of the next row. However, a maneuver requiring the alternating intervention of both hands considerably slows down the speed of calculation.
In addition, the general design of this positive device is such that its dimensions exceed those of a normal pen.
In another patent it has been proposed to mount drums bearing the figures on an axis housed in an envelope pierced with lights, axis which can be rotated from outside the envelope, by an angle corresponding to the value of the figure to be recorded, this by immobilizing the corresponding drum with respect to the envelope. The immobilization of the drum is controlled with the index finger of the left hand.
Here too we must perform an alternating maneuver with both hands; moreover, the tens carryover mechanism described cannot function properly.
The device according to the invention, the dimensions of which do not exceed those of a multi-color pen and of which the applicant has produced a prototype, has proved to be practical and reliable in operation.
The device according to the invention, which comprises a casing in which are mounted, so that they can be moved in their longitudinal direction, bars bearing the numbers 0 to 9 distributed at regular intervals and having notches distributed in the same way. , these notches allowing the bars to be moved from the outside of the envelope using a stylus, the envelope having lights through which the figures can be read,
is characterized in that the bars are mounted on a cylindrical surface so that they can rotate together about the axis of the cylindrical surface and be moved individually, parallel to this axis, and in that the casing has a groove through which the stylet can be introduced therein, this groove having a middle part parallel to said axis to ensure said longitudinal displacement of the bars and, at both ends of said part,
a part allowing a transverse displacement of the stylus so as to be able to rotate the set of bars around said axis after a longitudinal displacement of a bar has been effected.
The drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the device.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of the device. Fig. 2 is a corresponding sectional view. Fig. 3 is a corresponding partial view with cutouts.
Fig. 4 is a view along the line IV-IV of FIG. 3.
Fig. 5 is a view of a detail.
The device to be added and subtracted shown is in the form of a ballpoint pen, the cartridge of which, when it is extracted from the pen, makes it possible to perform the calculation maneuvers.
It comprises a cylindrical envelope 10 having eight openings 11 distributed on its periphery to allow the reading of the result of the calculation, as well as a groove 12 consisting of a median part 13 parallel to the axis of the envelope 10 and of two transverse end portions 14. The envelope also bears the letter A represented at 15 and symbolizes the addition and the letter S placed just above the letter A, but not visible in the drawing and symbolizing the subtraction. On the casing 10 is slidably mounted,
a sleeve 16 having a groove 17 of the same shape as the groove 13 but the length of the middle part of which is less than the displacement corresponding to a number. The sleeve 16 also has, on the side opposite to that presenting the groove 17, a groove 18 cooperating with a pin 19. This groove consists of two parts, one of which allows the sleeve to slide on the casing and the other to turn around the envelope.
The sleeve 16 also has a light 20 allowing the display of the letter A or S depending on the longitudinal position of the sleeve, and carries two columns formed by the numbers 0 to 9 and placed on either side of the middle part of the groove. 17. The left column is ordered from bottom to top and is used to add while the right column is ordered backwards and is used to subtract. As can be seen the numbers in the right column are smaller in order to avoid confusion with those in the left column.
The lower end of the casing 10 carries a ring 21 having a radial flange 22. This flange has eight notches 23 extending outwardly beyond the internal diameter of the casing 10. The ring 21 carries an index 24 arranged in the extension of the middle part 13.
A drum 25 is mounted in the casing 10, this drum having eight longitudinal grooves 26, the section of which is in the form of a ring segment, as shown in FIG. 4. These grooves define between them radial ribs 26 '. This drum 25 also has a cylindrical extension 27 and an axial bore, its end opposite the protrusion 27 being closed by a plug 28 whose outer diameter corresponds to the inner diameter of the casing 10.
On the extension 27 is fixed a ring 29 bearing the numbers 1 to 8 as well as a knurling. The ring 29 is fixed on the extension 27 so as to provide a space 30 'between its upper edge and the lower ends of the ribs 26' of the drum, this space receiving the flange 22 which fixes the longitudinal position of the drum 25 in the 'envelope 10, except when the ribs 26' are brought opposite the notches 23.
Eight bars 30, having a section corresponding to that of the grooves, are housed in the latter. These bars have twenty-one transverse notches 31 allowing the stylus to move the bars 30 in the grooves 26. The numbers 0 to 9 are inscribed at the bottom of the first ten notches; so when the bars are in their upper position it is. number 0 which appears in front of the corresponding light 11, as shown in fig. 3.
These bars are made of elastic material and tend to curve outwardly so that they come to bear, by their middle part, against the inner surface of the casing 10, while they come to rest, by their two ends. , in the grooves 26. As seen in FIG. 4, the internal diameter of the bars 30 is slightly greater than that of the bottom of the grooves 26. Thus the ends of the bars bear in the grooves by their inclined edges and the friction force is greater between the bars and the drum than between. the strips and the inner surface of the envelope. The background of the first twelve notches 31 has a different color from that of the background of the other nine notches for the reasons given below.
The stylus 32 consists of a ballpoint pen cartridge having at one end the usual ball point 33 and at the other end a dry point 34 intended to be introduced through the grooves 17 of the sleeve 16 and 12 of the casing 10 to actuate the bars 30. At its writing end the stylus 32 carries a tip 35 having an extension 36 capable of engaging with gentle friction in the bore of the drum 25 and peripheral grooves 37 intended to facilitate the gripping of the tip to remove the stylus from the hole in the drum.
The operation of the computing device is as follows: when it is desired to write, the stylus is placed in the position shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 ; the device having the shape, the dimensions and the weight of a ball-point pen it allows without further writing.
When an addition is to be made, the stylus which is held in the right hand is removed by the point 35, the dry point 34 in front. The envelope 10 is held by its upper end, between the thumb and forefinger of the left hand, the envelope resting by its other end in the palm of the hand. The reset is carried out by rotating the ring 29 until the ribs 26 'of the drum 25 come to present themselves in front of the notches 23 of the ring 21. The ring 29 is pulled out of the ring. envelope 10 until the bars 30 abut, by their upper end, against the stopper 28. The drum is brought back into the envelope 10, and the number 1 appearing on the ring 29 in front of the index 24.
The man chon 16 is brought into the position shown in FIG. 1, the letter A appearing by the light 20. The first number of the addition is recorded starting with the units; the dry point 34 is introduced into the groove 17 of the sleeve 16, opposite the figures in the left column, then it is brought to the lower end of the groove 17. This has the effect, first of all of lower the corresponding bar and then turn the drum 25 so as to bring the bar corresponding to the tens in front of the groove 17. When the first number has been recorded, the number 1 of the ring is brought in front of the index 24 and the next number can be saved.
When the drypoint 34 falls into one of the nine notches whose color is different from that of the first twelve, it is necessary to move the stylus upwards which also moves the sleeve 16 upwards by a gap. The slots 11 are then closed by the sleeve and it is the letter S which is displayed by the light 20. Thus, when recording the next digit of the number, the displacement of the bar will be greater than the number. indicated on the left column if the stylus is moved downwards, which will have the effect of ensuring the transfer of the tens and bringing the sleeve back to the add position.
If, on the contrary, during the recording of the following figures, the drypoint falls each time into one of the nine indentations for which the color indicates that they must be moved upwards, these movements will be made until the sleeve is returned to the addition position, even if it means recording 0's if the number has been fully recorded. So for example, if the number 999 is recorded in the device and you want to add the number 1, it will be necessary to record the number 0001 so that the sleeve returns to the addition position, the recording of three first digits 001 requiring an upward movement and only the digit 0 of the fourth row bringing the sleeve back to the addition position by recording the 1 of the result 1000.
To subtract a number from the number recorded in the device, we proceed in the same way but using the right column and starting the operation with the sleeve in the upper position where it is an S which is displayed by the light 20 and continuing until the sleeve returns to this position if it has been moved.
We see that when the operator makes a mistake in the direction of movement of the stylus, he is warned by the fact that he cannot turn the drum so as not to be in the next row; in fact it cannot bring the stylus in front of the transverse ends 14 of the grooves, the bars arriving before full travel by abutting against the stopper 28 respectively against the ring 21.
When the calculation is finished, the casing 10 can be completely closed by moving the sleeve 16 upwards, which closes the slots 11, then by rotating it, which closes the groove 12. These two movements are allowed by the combined its pin 19 and groove 18.
As a variant, the sleeve 16 could be omitted and the groove 12 could be completed at its two ends with a loop extending to the left as far as the upper row of the bar, in order to ensure the transfers of ten. These loops are well known and used in the first device mentioned at the start of the description.
