Coated electrode for electric arc welding of aluminum and its alloys The present invention relates to a coated electrode for electric arc welding of aluminum and its alloys.
To obtain a particularly shiny, impeccable weld bead by means of an electrode based on aluminum or an aluminum alloy, these electrodes are generally used in conjunction with fluxes capable of dissolving the aluminum oxide which forms during welding. The fluxes also have the task of stabilizing and ionizing the arc and of facilitating the removal of slag from the weld deposit. Semi-fluid, pasty or powdery mixtures of chlorides and fluorides of alkali metals and / or alkaline earth metals are generally used for this purpose.
These mixtures generally exhibit a fairly pronounced hygroscopicity, so that when they are used in the form of coatings, the electrodes. thus coated are sometimes relatively unstable and do not withstand long storage.
We have already succeeded in greatly reducing this hygroscopicity by giving the aforementioned coatings a particular composition as described in the patent. However, coated electrodes the coating of which consists essentially of mixtures of alkali metal halides and / or alkaline earth metal, even if these coatings have been improved as regards their hydroscopicity,
sometimes have the drawback of a certain corrosive action of their coating on their aluminum core or its alloys.
This action occurs mainly in the wet phase of the electrode preparation process, during the pressing and drying of the coating mass and remains even in the finished electrodes.
The present invention proposes to remedy this drawback. It relates to a coated electrode for electric arc welding of aluminum and its alloys, comprising a core of aluminum or aluminum alloy and a coating composed at least for the most part of mixtures of halides of alkali and / or alkaline earth metals, characterized in that its coating contains an anticorrosive substance, for example a chromate, a vanadate, a bromate, a chlorate, a persalt, etc.
The action of the chromate, for example potassium chromate or dichromate, added in even a small amount, for example from 0.1 to 0.5% of the weight of the coating, is clearly anticorrosive. It is advantageous to adjust the pH of the coating material when it is in the paste state, between 4 and 6 so that the chromate protects the metal core more effectively during all the time of electrode fabrication. When coating is dry,
the anticorrosive action of the chromate persists and is felt as soon as, in the possible presence of humidity, the coating mass could give rise to corrosive decomposition products.
The presence of the chromate helps to stabilize the coating mass and to facilitate the removal of slag formed during welding on the workpiece. It also contributes to a certain extent to obtaining a compact weld bead, practically free from porosities and endowed with excellent qualities of tenacity and Example An aluminum wire is coated with 'a coating made up of a mixture of chlorides and fluorides of sodium, potassium, lithium and aluminum, to the pasty mass of which 0.2 to 0 has been added,
3% potassium chromate K2 Cr 04, calculated on the dry weight of the mixture, the pH of the pasty mass being approximately 5. After pressing and drying, a coated electrode is obtained which is perfectly stable in storage and resistant to humidity.
