Description

Coated Electrode for Arc Welding of Aluminum and Aluminum Alloys The present invention relates to a coated electrode for electric arc welding of aluminum and its alloys.

To obtain a particularly shiny, impeccable weld bead by means of an electrode based on aluminum or an aluminum alloy, these electrodes are generally used in conjunction with fluxes capable of dissolving the liquid. aluminum oxide which forms during welding.

The fluxes also have the task of stabilizing and ionizing the arc and of facilitating the removal of slag from the hard solder deposit. Semi-fluid, pasty or powdery mixtures of chlorides and fluorides of alkali metals and / or alkaline earth metals are generally used for this purpose.

These mixtures generally exhibit a fairly pronounced hygroscopicity, so that when used in the form of coatings, the electrodes thus coated are sometimes relatively unstable and do not stand long storage.

The object of the present invention is to remedy this drawback and at the same time to improve the gloss and compactness properties of the weld beads.

It relates to a coated electrode for electric arc welding of aluminum and its alloys, comprising a core of aluminum and / or its alloys and a coating composed, at least in part,

of a mixture of halides of alkali and alkaline earth metals, characterized in that at least 15 0 / o of the halides contained in the coating is in the form of potassium and aluminum fluoride corresponding to the formula K3 Al Fo.

The coating can advantageously contain at least 40% of halogen ions, at least 20% of alkali and alkaline earth cations and at least 30% of cations from the aluminum group. More specifically, it would be advantageous for the packaging to contain
EMI0001.0079

    at <SEP> minus <SEP> 15 <SEP> 0 / o <SEP> of fluorine <SEP> ions
<tb> at <SEP> minus <SEP> 12 <SEP> 0 / o <SEP> of <SEP> potassium ions
<tb> at <SEP> minus <SEP> 2 <SEP> 0 / o <SEP> of <SEP> aluminum ions.

By way of example, it is possible to use with good results coatings containing
EMI0001.0087

    17 <SEP> to <SEP> 2.3 <SEP> 0 / o <SEP> of fluorine <SEP> ions
<tb> 25 <SEP> to <SEP> 40 <SEP> 0 / o <SEP> of <SEP> chlorine ions
<tb> 2 <SEP> to <SEP> 7 <SEP> 0 / o <SEP> of <SEP> aluminum ions remains: alkali and alkaline earth ions, the 18 to 30 0/0 at all being in the form of K3 Al FO.

A small part of the K3 Al Fo could be replaced by cryolite (Na3 Al Fs).

The electrodes thus coated are not very hygroscopic and relatively stable. They give a compact and shiny solder horn, practically free of porosities, enjoying good properties of toughness and elasticity. Incidentally,

the electrodes according to the invention can also be specially treated against the corrosive action that certain components of the coating could exert on their metal core. For this purpose, anticorrosive substances such as, for example, chromates, can be incorporated into the coating,

or else treat the metal core beforehand by immersing it in a bath containing, for example, nitric acid or chromate ions, etc.
