Use of naphthotriazoles as optical brighteners for synthetic textile fibers The present invention relates to the use of a new class of fluorescent naphthotriazole compounds with new and valuable properties as optical brighteners for synthetic textile fibers with the exception of nylon, such as Dacron and Orion (registered trademarks).
It is known that blue fluorescent 2- (4 styrylphenyl) - 2 H-naphtho [1,2] triazole compounds (which contain a sulfonic acid group in the stilbene core) are used in a neutral to weakly acidic bath to lighten wool and cellulose fibers can. In contrast, none of these compounds has a noticeable affinity for the synthetic fibers such as Dacron, Orion, etc., which are made from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol, acrylonitrile, etc.
This lack of affinity is likely due to the fact that fine tissues of Dacron and Orion, which are highly hydrophobic, are not penetrated by these relatively water-soluble sulfonated products.
It is also known that the sulfonic acid group in the stilbene nucleus of the triazole compounds mentioned can be replaced by cyano, sulfone and sulfonamide groups, whereby optical brighteners are ent which are used to brighten z. B. paraffin, synthetic polymers such.
B. polymeric amides of ethylenediamine and adipic acid, polyvinyl chloride, polyacrylonitrile, polyacrylic acid esters and copolymers of these materials, cosmetic preparations, ointment bases and the like can be used.
In French additional patent no. 68 636 to patent no. 1071 727, the optical brightening of textile fibers with the aid of compounds is described which differ from the compounds to be used according to the invention only in that they are in the 2-position of the stilbene radical have a free, non-esterified carboxyl group.
It has now been found that certain fluorescent naphthotriazoles, which do not contain sulfonic acid or cyano, sulfone and sulfonamide groups, are readily absorbed by Orlon and Dacron fibers as effective brightening agents. The new fluorescent naphthotriazoles have an outstandingly high whitening and bleaching power compared to other brightening agents with which attempts have been made.
They can also be used on fibers and fabrics made from cellulose nitrate, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene and polymethyl methacrylate. However, they are unsuitable for the optical brightening of nylon fibers.
The new fluorescent naphthotriazoles have a structure which is characterized by the following formula:
EMI0001.0056
where A = CONHR3, CON (R4) z or
EMI0002.0003
and where R1 and R2 are hydrogen, chlorine, bromine, fluorine, a lower alkyl, such as. B. methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl, a lower alkoxy or cycloalkoxy, such as.
B. methoxy, ethoxy, propoxy, butoxy, isobutoxy, cyclohexyloxy, R3 is a lower alkyl or cycloalkyl, such as. B. methyl, ethyl, Pro pyI, butyl, cyclohexyl, etc., or a dialkylaminoalkyl with up to 16 carbon atoms, such as. B.
Dimethylaminoethyl, Dimethylaminopropyl, Dimethylaminobutyl, Diethylaminobutyl, Dipropylaminoäthyl, Dipropylaniinobutyl, Dibutylaminoäthyl, Dibutylaminobutyl, a Dicycloalkylaminoalkyl, z. B.
Dicyclohexylaminoethyl, dicyelohexylaminopropyl, dicyclohexylaminobutyl, etc., a morpholinoalkyl or piperidinoalkyl with 1 to 4 carbon atoms in the alkylene chain, a lower oxyalkyl, such as. B. oxyäthyl, oxypropyl, oxybutyl, etc., R4 is an alkyl group with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, such as.
B. methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl, oxyalkyl as R3 and R, the atoms which are necessary to form a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring system with the nitrogen atom, z.
B. the morpholine, piperidine, pyrrolidine, imidazole, pyrazole, 1,2,3-triazole, 4-pyridine, J-piperidone, etc. ring, or the hexamethylene imine ring are required.
Naphthotriazoles of the formula given above are prepared by diazotizing a stilbene of the formula
EMI0002.0074
in which R1 and R2 have the meaning given above, by adding hydrochloric acid and sodium nitrite, preferably in aqueous solution, at a temperature of 0 to 10 ° C. to the acetic acid amino solution.
When the diazotization is complete, 2-naphthylamine in the form of the hydrochloride or a suspension is added in equimolar amounts, taking care that the solution always reacts slightly acidic. After coupling has ended, the monoazo dye, for example by heating with copper sulfate in an alkaline solvent such as.
B. pyridine or ss, u-picoline, oxidized to the triazole. The resulting compound is then treated with thionyl chloride or a mixture of phosphorus oxychloride and phosphorus pentachloride in a known manner to convert the carboxylic acid group into the acid chloride. The latter is then brought to the reaction in a known manner with a suitable amine, the naphthotriazoles of the above formula being obtained.
The fluorescent naphthotriazoles can also be prepared using intermediates of the following formula:
EMI0002.0098
where A, R1, R2, R3, R4 and R have the same meaning as stated above,
in that the nitro group is reduced to the amino group and thereupon a diazotization and coupling with 2-naphthylamine and finally an oxidation of the azo dye obtained in this way takes place to form the triazole compound.
The stilbene intermediates of the formula (a) can be prepared according to the Pfeiffer method (Reports, 44, 1119) by condensation of the methyl ester of 5-nitro-o-tolucarboxylic acid with any of the benzaldehydes given below:
Benzaldehyde, o-, m- and p-bromobenzaldehyde, o-, m- and p-chlorobenzaldehyde, 2,3-, 2,4-, 2,5-, 3,4- and 2,6-dichlorobenzaldehyde, o- , m- and p-toluene aldehyde, 5-bromo-2-methoxybenzaldehyde, 5-chloro-2-methoxybenzaldehyde, 2-methoxy-m-tolualdehyde, 5-methoxy-o-tolualdehyde, 3-bromo-4-ethoxybenzaldehyde, 4- Butoxy-3-chlorobenzaldehyde, o-, m- and p-methoxybenzaldehyde, 2,4-dibromobenzaldehyde, o-,
m- and p-ethoxybenzaldehyde, 3,4-diethoxybenzaldehyde, o-, m- and p-propoxybenzaldehyde, 2, 3-dimethoxybenzaldehyde, o-, m- and p-butoxybenzaldehyde, p-fluorobenzaldehyde, 4-chloro-o-tolualdehyde , 3-chloro-p-tolualdehyde, 2,4-, 2,5- and 3,5-dimethylbenzaldehyde, 4- and 5-isopropyl-o-tolualdehyde, 2,4- and 2,5-diethylbenzaldehyde, p-tert .-Butylbenzaldehyde, p-ethylbenzaldehyde. The condensation products thus obtained,
which have a carboxylic acid group in the 2-position and a nitro group in the 4-position on the stilbene nucleus are then converted into the corresponding acid chlorides by a known method, e.g. B. by treatment with thionyl chloride, whereupon the latter products are allowed to react with a suitable amine in a known manner. This gives the stilbene intermediates (a).
Another production method for the style benzene intermediate products (a) consists in the reaction of a suitable benzaldehyde with a suitable 5-nitro-o-toluamine according to Macovski, Georgescu and Bachmeyer, Ber. 74B (1941) 1279-1284 and Chem. Abstracts 36 (1942) 4813.
Examples of amines which can be reacted with the carboxylic acid chlorides are the following compounds: methylamine, ethylamine, propylamine, butylamine, dimethylaminoethylamine, dimethylaminopropylamine, dimethylaminobutylamine, diethylaminoethylamine, diethylaminopropylamine, diethylaminobutylamine, dipropylaminoethylaminopropylamine, dipropylaminoethylamine,
Dipropylaminobutylamine, dibutylaminoethylamine, dibutylaminopropylamine, dibutylaminobutylamine, morpholinoethylamine, morpholinopropylamine, morpholinobutylamine, piperidinoethylamine, piperidinomethylamine, dimethylamine, diethylamine, dipropylamine, dibutylamine, imidazole
1,2-dihydropyridine, pyrrolidine, γ-piperidone, 4-pyridone, pyrazole, 1,2,3 @ -triazole, 2-aminoethanol, 1-amino-2-propanol, 2,2'-iminodiethanol.
Naphthotriazoles with an ionic substituent in the 3-position of the 4-styrylphenyl configuration, e.g. B. -CONH-alkyl-N-dialkyl, are water-soluble and color Orion. Such triazoles which do not contain such a water-solubilizing group, e.g. B. -CONH-alkyl, dye Dacron. Naphthotriazoles which have a hydroxyl group, such as. B.
-CONHC "H40H, are even more soluble in water. Example 1 50 mg 4'-chloro-N- [3- (N, N-dimethyl) - aminopropyl] -4- [2- (2 H-naphtho [1,2] - triazolyl)] - 2-stilbene-carboxamide of the formula
EMI0003.0070
are dissolved in 100 cm-dimethylformamide. 5 cm- 'of this solution (- 0.0025g brightener) are added to a dye bath which contains 145 cm3 of 1% acetic acid.
5 g of an Orlon cloth swatch are immersed in it and the dye bath is heated to 88 to 93.5 ° C. for 1 hour while stirring, whereupon the swatch is removed, rinsed and dried. In relation to the untreated cloth, the treated sample shows a high degree of lightening.
The brightener used was prepared as follows: A mixture of 30 g of 4'-chloro-4- [2- (2 H-naphtho [1,2] -triazolyl)] - 2-stilbene carbonyl chloride, 27.5 g of 3 - (N, N - dimethylamino) - propylamine and 360g of toluene is heated to 95 C for 6 hours. After cooling and filtering, the crude product is purified by dissolving it in 500 g of N, N-dimethylformamide, which contains 5 g of bone carbon, and filtering off at 100.degree.
The filtrate is diluted with 2.5 l of water to precipitate the purified product. After filtering off and drying, 28.2 g of 4'-chloro-N- [3- (N, N-dimethyl) aminopropyl] - 4- [2- (2 H-naphtho [1,2] -triazolyl)] - 2- stilbene-carboxamide obtained as a light yellow powder, which melts at 228.1 to 229.2 C (uncorr.).
The 4'-chloro-4- [2- (2 H-naphtho [1,2] triazolyl)] - 2- stilbene-carbonyl chloride used in this example is obtained by adding 130 g of 4'-chloro-4- [2- (2 H-naphtho [1,2] triazolyl)] - 2-stilbene-carboxylic acid to a mixture of 350 g of thionyl chloride with 1 g of pyridine.
The mixture is stirred for 5 hours at 85 to 95 ° C., then the excess thionyl chloride is evaporated off under reduced pressure, and 130 g of the acid chloride with a melting point of 187.8 to 190.0 ° C. (uncorr.) Are thus obtained. The 4'-chloro-4- [2- (2 H-naphtho [1,2] triazolyl)] - 2- stilbene-carboxylic acid is prepared as follows:
304 cm 3 of concentrated hydrochloric acid and 1500 cm 3 of water are added to a solution of 159 g of 4-amino-4'-chloro-2-stilbene-carboxylic acid in 2400 cm3 of glacial acetic acid. After cooling the mixture to 0 C, 41 g of sodium nitrite are introduced into 100 cm of water for diazotization.
The mixture is then stirred for 30 minutes at 0 to 5 ° C. and the excess of nitrous acid is then destroyed with enough sulfamic acid until the iodine starch paper no longer reacts. A warm solution of 92.2 g of 2-naphthylamine in 1500 cm3, containing 68 cm3 of concentrated hydrochloric acid, is gradually added to the water to the diazo solution, which is kept at 5 to 10 ° C.
The coupling reaction is brought to an end by adding 864 g of sodium acetate trihydrate in the course of 1 hour, whereupon the mixture is stirred for a further 16 hours. The resulting precipitate of o-aminoazo dye is filtered off with suction and washed thoroughly on the suction filter with 60 C warm water, 700 g of wet filter cake being obtained.
The filter cake is dissolved in 3000 cm3 of picoline mixture at 95 ° C. and treated with a solution of 362 g of copper sulfate pentahydrate in 725 CM 3 water. After stirring for 2 hours at the reflux temperature, a solution of 116 g of sodium sulfide flakes in 500 cm3 of water is added.
Then the copper sulfide is filtered off at 90 ° C., the solution is brought to a pH of 10 with aqueous NaOH and subjected to steam distillation to separate the picolin mixture. After steam distillation, the product is filtered off, slurried in 6000 cm3 of water at 90 C and treated with concentrated hydrochloric acid up to a Congo blue acidity, then filtered off again, washed acid-free with water and finally dried at 110 C under reduced pressure.
There are 200 g of 4'-chloro-4- [2- (2 H-naphtho [1,2] triazolyl)] - 2- stilbene-carboxylic acid - a yellow powder with a melting point of 274 to 275 C (uncorr.) receive.
The 4-amino-4'-chloro-2-stilbene-carboxylic acid used is prepared as follows: A solution of 200 g of 4'-chloro-4-nitro-2-stilbene carboxylic acid (prepared from 4-chlorobenzaldehyde and 5 -Nitro-o-toluamide according to the method of Macovski et al., Loe. Cit.) In 540 g of N, N-dimethylformamide is reduced with 200 g of iron drill chips, which are treated with a solution of 50 g of concentrated hydrochloric acid in 300 g of water

Two liquors were produced which consisted of solutions of 0.1 / sodium hydroxide and 0.1% Peralgal 0 (based on the weight of the liquor) in 100 cm3 of water each. 0.02%, based on the weight of the fabric, of the brightener of the formula A or of the brightener of the formula B, dissolved in 5 cm3 of dimethylformamide each, were added to the liquors. A sample of 5 g of Dacron 54 was added to each of the two liquors. These were then heated to 93 ° C. for one hour while stirring.
The Dacron® samples were then removed, rinsed and dried. After the samples had dried, comparative brightness measurements were made with a fluorescence photometer. The sample treated with the whitening agent of formula A had a reading of 72, whereas the sample treated with the whitening agent of formula B showed a reading of 21. These values clearly demonstrate the superiority of the whitening agent of formula A over the whitening agent of formula B on Dacron - Tissue. The coloring of the whitening agent of the formula A was pure and light in color, that of the whitening agent of the formula B was dull and grayish in color.
