Injection bulb
Swiss Patent No. 356566 relates to an injection ampoule in which the neck is closed with a fixed pierceable cover, on which is mounted a neck having a flange and on which fits a socket provided with a needle. Said injection bulb is remarkable in that it comprises, to pierce the cover, a sliding tube mounted in a channel of the neck and intended to serve for emptying the liquid, said tube extending beyond the neck. so as to pierce the cover when it is pulled inwards.
In the injection ampoule according to said patent, the neck is made of plastic while the movable piercing tube has been made from one piece of an ordinary metal needle.
A metal piercing tube has been used since this can be sterilized easily and can easily pierce the cover of the ampoule.
Due to the sliding fit between the piercing tube and the neck, the latter was made with a softer material, namely plastic. To secure the plastic neck provided with a flange, use was made of a metal clamping ring since it is difficult to achieve the necessary tightening with a plastic ring. So, we had to manufacture the neck and the sealing ring in two different materials, namely plastic and metal respectively.
The tube ide piercing is therefore a steel tube which has been cut ien bias so as to form a cutting leading edge from which the burrs have been removed by grinding. Such molding is necessary either to allow the tube to be mounted without difficulty in the neck channel, and to avoid the risk that flickering metal burrs which are generally present are detached during the piercing of the bulb cover and that pieces '' of the cover are driven by the burrs on the cutting front edge so as to inject, if necessary,
metal burrs and small pieces of the lid along with the contents of the bulb.
During sterile mounting in the channel of the co'ulissant steel tube, it may happen that some of the tubes slide with difficulty in the channel, which is due to variations in the tubular diameter, and which makes mounting difficult. In addition, if the steel tube has been incorrectly fitted, it can sink into the plastic neck, which can eventually lead to a bit of plastic being pulled out of the wall of the channel with a knife. causes a complication, because one is then obliged either to throw away the bulb, or to take out the tube Ct to reassemble it again.
As it is therefore necessary to closely monitor the correct placement in the channel of each tube, it is necessary to manually mount the tubes. Under these conditions it is difficult to use rubber gloves due to the reduced size and the leading edge cutting the tubes. As the manual assembly with the help of a pliers is inconvenient, one has to use one's fingers, which risks eliminating sterility.
The aim of the present invention is to avoid said drawbacks. It relates to an injection ampoule doub the end intended to carry the needle is closed with a fixed cover capable of being pierced, and carries a neck provided with a flange, said neck being pierced with a tubular channel containing a sliding piercing tube intended for draining the liquid and which extends beyond the neck, said tube causing the piercing of the cover when it is moved inwards, by mounting the socket of a needle on the neck. The injection ampoule according to the invention is characterized in that the perforation tube is made of plastic and that the neck is metallic.
Several advantages can therefore be obtained.
When the movable piercing tube is made of plastic, continuous tubing manufactured in a known manner can be twisted to form a roll which, after being sterilized, is fed to a machine in which sterile cuts are made. suitable to steep lengths of a scal pel, while forming an anterior edge cutting at an angle. As, as a result, no burrs occur, this entirely avoids molding of the cutting edge of the tube. This way of working not only simplifies production, but also means a reduced cost price.
If the combination of the plastic piercing tubes and the metal neck is employed, the hardness of the metal prevents the tube from sinking into the sides of the neck channel when the tube is mounted through it.
Polyamides may be particularly suitable as a plastic material for the piercing tube, which material can be easily sterilized, for example by moist heat sterilization, and in the form of a sufficiently sharp cutting angle tube, having shown itself. capable of reliably piercing a rubber disc of the type which is usually employed as an ampoule cover. however, it is also possible to employ other plastics having similar properties.
You can also make plastic tubes with. tolerances, in particular, reduced, and when the metal neck at its upper part is provided with a number of ribs twisting in it, possible inevitable variations between the external diameter of the plastic tube and the diameter of the channel in the metal neck do not occur. not present in an embarrassing way.
In said injection ampoule, the neck provided with a flange can be held at the end of the needle ide the ampoule using a metal clamping ring. This ring can be made in one piece with the neck of the bulb. This results in a simplification and a reduced manufacturing cost price. It is convenient to produce the neck and ring forming a unit by cold stamping, for example, aluminum.
By cold stamping the lower part of the unit corresponding to the clamping ring is preferably given a polygonal cross section, for example octagonal or the like.
In the case where the neck of the bulb has been made of aluminum or other relatively malleable metals, one obtains the additional advantage that the sleeve of the needle which is normally made of metal comes to be firmly fixed to the metal neck and can be better fixed by firmly twisting the neck vulture, which makes the socket which is relatively hard to hold the metal neck, more malleable. I1 is therefore certain that nothing of the contents of the ampoule can escape between the neck of the ampoule and the needle socket. The seal is perfect.
The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, one embodiment of the injection ampoule forming the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows a longitudinal section.
Fig. 2 shows the same longitudinal section with the ampoule ready for use with a needle fitted.
By design, 1 denotes a glass ampoule having the end for carrying the needle 2 in the form of a neck with a collar 3, on the top of which are placed a disc 4 of rubber and a conical neck 5 of metal fitted with a flange 6 and a clamping ring 7. Thanks to a domed edge towards the inside, the lower part of the ring clamps the bottom of the collar 3 and adapts its upper part to the flange 6. The neck 5 is crossed by a channel 9 in which has been mounted a displaceable plastic tube 10 provided with a cutting front edge 11 and whose length is such that it extends beyond the neck 5. It should be that the leading cutting edge 11 of the tube 10 makes an angle of 25 to 300 with the longitudinal axis of the tube.
In order to keep the tube 10 and the neck 5 sterile, a cap 12 has been placed on the neck 5. The upper part of the cavity of the cap 12 has been given a conicity corresponding to that of the neck 5 in order to ensure the perfect seal between the cap and the neck. In addition, the hat is provided with a petticoat to protect the upper part of the injection ampoule.
The rear end of the bulb 1, not shown in the drawing, has the conventional shape in which a shutter serving as a piston is mounted in the open rear end. A rod can be attached to this shutter which can be guided by a device mounted around the rear end of the bulb.
If the injection ampoule is put into service, the cap 12 is removed, a hypodermic needle is then placed on the metal neck 5, while pulling back the plastic tube 10 which therefore penetrates the disc. 4 rubber, which allows the introduction of the needle inside the ampoule.
In fig. 2, 13 designates the socket of the hypodermic needle, while 14 indicates the needle itself. It will be seen that the outer end of the plastic tube 10 bears against the inner end of the needle 14 and that, in its backward movement, the tube 10 has entered the rubber disc 4.
When advancing the piston, not shown in the drawing, the ampoule can be emptied of its contents.
In the illustrated embodiment, the injection ampoule is presented with a hypodermic needle. However, it is also possible to apply it with any shape of injection needles, such as those used with luer-loek syringes.
In this case, the neck 5 is given a taper corresponding to that inside the sleeve of the needle used, just as the tube 10 is given the length necessary to ensure the piercing of the cover.
The invention is not limited to a glass bulb, but can also be a pressi-ble bulb.
