In einer Ausführungsform des Verfahrens gemäss der Erfindung besteht die verwendete Elektrolysen- zelle aus einer Vielzahl von Platten;
Beim Anfahren des Prozesses oder zu anderen Zeiten kann es vorteilhaft-sein, die Polari tät der Elektrodon kurzzeitig umzukehren, da dies die Aktivität der Zelle zu verbessern scheint. Der Mecha nismus, durch den die Umpolarisierungleine'Vcrbesse= rang der Aktivität- der' Zelle bewirkt, ist;

Process for the production of halohydrins The invention relates to a process for the production of halohydrins. According to the invention, halohydrins can advantageously and economically be obtained from an α, ß-unsaturated carbonyl compound, such as.
B. a, ß-unsaturated aliphatic aldehydes or ketones, which have at least some solubility in water, are produced. In a particular embodiment of the invention, a dilute aqueous solution of an aliphatic unsaturated aldehyde and a hydrogen halide is treated electrolytically, the corresponding halohydrins being formed in high yields.
The inventive method is particularly advantageous for the production of halohydrins from aerolein.
The method according to the invention is now characterized in that an aqueous solution of an α, β-unsaturated carbonyl compound is subjected to the action of a direct current in an electrolysis cell in the presence of at least one of the compounds hydrogen chloride, hydrogen bromide and hydrogen iodide.
The direct current is supplied through cathodic and anodic electrodes, which are arranged in the solution or are immersed in the solution. Unsaturated carbonyl compounds which can be treated according to the invention are, for example, aerolein, methacrolein, crotonaldehyde, methyl vinyl ketone, mesityl oxide, 2-cyclohexenone and the like and their homologues and analogous compounds.
In general, the lower aliphatic carbonyl compounds with 3-8 carbon atoms are preferred. All of the above connec tions are more or less soluble in water.
Although the compounds named above as examples contain only one double bond, aldehydes or ketones which contain a large number of these bonds can of course also be treated by the process according to the invention. The compounds can also contain one or more carbonyl radicals.
Furthermore, in the aliphatic and / or alicyclic unsaturated compounds of the type mentioned above, various alkyl, aryl and / or aralkyl substituents can be bonded directly to the various carbon atoms of the molecule instead of one or more hydrogen atoms.
The process according to the invention can be carried out under very different conditions depending on the starting material, the desired halohydrin, etc. These variables are discussed in more detail below, with special mention of their effects on the electrochemical hydrohalogenation of aerolein for the production of glycerol monohalohydrin in high yields.
Of course, a change in the influencing variables also has a more or less effect on the effectiveness of the electrochemical hydrohalogenation of the other compounds of the classes mentioned.
To carry out the method according to the invention, an undivided electrolysis vessel is usually used, since the success of the method depends on reactions of both the cathode and the anode. The divided cells that are used in most electrolysis processes can thus be dispensed with in the method according to the invention.
The elimination of the membranes used to subdivide conventional cells is advantageous because the cell resistance is reduced here and consequently the power consumption is lower. Both the cathode and the anode can be made of any electrically conductive material that is inert to the reactants and the reaction products.
Cadmium, zinc, tin, iron, lead, mercury or alloys of these metals are suitable for producing the cathode. Cadmium is the preferred material for the cathode because it appears to give the best results. The anode can expediently be made of materials such as carbon, graphite, platinum and the like, which are not significantly impaired by the reaction conditions.
The usable area of the cathodes and anodes should preferably be the same, but it is also possible to use cathodes and anodes with different usable areas. To achieve maximum current utilization, it is advantageous if the cathode and anode surfaces face each other. This can easily be achieved by using flat plates as electrodes. If the device contains more than one cell, the electrodes are normally arranged so that the distances between the anode and cathode of the respective cells are essentially the same.
In one embodiment of the method according to the invention, the electrolysis cell used consists of a plurality of plates;
which serve as cathodes and anodes and are arranged alternately in such a way that they form a lamellar structure that contains a large number of individual cells consisting of cathode and anode. Suitable seals are placed between the different plates to prevent leakage of the material in the cell:
All plates except the end plates are apertured so that the reactant solution introduced into the device flows through the various cells one after the other. It is also possible to introduce the reaction participants separately and at different points into the device.
It is readily apparent to a person skilled in the art that the number of cells which can be present in the same preparation is unlimited and that the number and size of these cells depends mainly on the level of the throughput desired. The current densities can also be within relatively wide limits without adversely affecting the course of the reaction.
In general it can be said that the current density lies in the range between 1.08 and -108 A / dm2. should, with a range of 3 to 54 A / dm2 being preferred. The optimal current density is different, depending on the working conditions, e.g.
B. the input material to be treated, the concentrations used; Working temperatures etc.
When starting the process or at other times, it can be advantageous to briefly reverse the polarity of the electrodon, as this appears to improve the activity of the cell. The mechanism by which the reversal of polarization brings about an improvement in the activity of the cell is;
unknown, however, the theory is unimportant in view of the actually achieved results for the method according to the invention.
Although the method according to the invention is preferably carried out continuously, batch operation is also possible and is included in the scope of the invention. When the process is carried out continuously, the concentration of the α, / i-unsaturated aldehyde in the aqueous solution which is introduced into the electrolysis cell must of course not exceed the solubility of the aldehyde in the electrolyte solution.
In the case of Aerolein, the upper limit is over 20%. Often, however, it is desirable to work at lower concentrations such as about -0.0i: to about -10%: Als-halogens. chlorine, bromine or iodine or mixtures thereof are suitable, bromine being preferred.
Fluorine does not form fluorohydrin under the conditions of the process according to the invention, but its presence is not excluded, since it can be present in a mixture with the suitable halogens. The halogen is usually introduced into the reaction mixture in the form of an aqueous solution of its hydrogen derivative, that is to say as hydrogen halide.
Soluble halide salts can be used as a supplementary source for the halogen: Other electrolytes can also be used to increase the conductivity of the electrolyte solution! increase.
The hydrogen halide must; generally speaking; at least: be present in sufficient quantity to convert the entire aldehyde present into the monohalogen = hyarine, whereby it is usually intended :. is moderate;
to use the 'half hydrogen' in excess; since a certain dihalogen = hydrin formation usually takes place. The process, according to the fertilizer in an acid.
Medium must be carried out; The introduction of the halogenated hydrogen ensures that the pH value. the cell below 7, remains; The temperature at which the;
Procedure is carried out; is not critical; however become habitual-] I; Temperatures: below the boiling point of the aldehyde or ketone to be converted - preferred; so that: the application of pressure is avoided.
However, it is-also-possible to use the @ procedure with. to perform over-atmospheric spherical printing; which are not excluded from the invention.
The desired products of the process are monohydrins and dihalohydrins: In most cases, a: small amount of by-product is obtained;
which is usually obtained in the form of the saturated derivative of the unsaturated starting material. For example, in the case of aerols, a propionaldehyde and propanol are formed as by-products. The vers fahrensprodtikte can from; the - watery:
Electrol @ t solution - in the usual way; z. B: by distillation or. Extr-aktiön = with, solvents; separated.
Unreacted starting materials, that is, the carbonyl compound and the hydrogen halide, can be recovered and returned to the electrolysis cell: The - in the, process = mono- and. Dihalohydrins can:
after separation, hydrolysed to the corresponding polyol in the usual way, for example: by heating in the presence of oxides; Hydroids, carbonates and: bicarbonates of alkaline earths or alkali metals, e.g.
Soda ash, lime, limestone and sodium hydroxide: If aerolein is used as the starting material, glycerine is obtained as a product of hydrolysis.
In the preparation of the halogenated organic hydroxy compounds according to the invention, the pure result of the interaction of the three reacting substances, i.e. the unsaturated aldehyde or ketone, the hydrogen halide and the water,
under the influence of direct current, the addition of a hydroxy radical and a halogen atom or of two halogen atoms to the olefinic bond of the starting material with the formation of a halogenated organic hydroxy compound or a halogenated carbonyl compound. It is believed that this hydrohalogenation or halogenation takes place at or near the anode.
At the same time, the aldehyde or ketone group attached to the organic starting material is apparently reduced at or close to the cathode. The cathode and anode reactions appear to take place simultaneously, but it is immaterial to the invention whether they take place simultaneously or one after the other. It is entirely possible that various intermediate reactions, including the formation of a hypohalous acid, precede the formation of the end products.
However, it is not yet fully known which reactions take place in the cell. The hypothesis presented here with regard to the course of the reaction is therefore in no way to be regarded as a limitation of the invention.
The term current yield as used here means the ratio of the amount of electricity theoretically required for the number of moles of the converted substance. is the amount of electricity actually consumed. In the hydrohalogenation of unsaturated aldehydes and ketones according to the invention, theoretically at least 2 Faradays are required to form one mole of halohydrin. second hand..
In the experiments described in the following examples, an electrolysis cell of the lamellar construction described above was used.
It consisted of 6 rectangular plates of 70 X 203 mm: A rubber seal of 3.2 mm was used to separate the plates: The useful electrode area = each side of the plate was 90.3 cm2: Since two outer sides of the plates are not available; the device had a total usable electrode area of 903 cm2: A reservoir with a pump was used to continuously introduce the insert into the device.
The reaction products were drawn off continuously by a pump in an amount which corresponded to the amount of the starting materials supplied. The device was the same in all experiments, but in certain cases Käthoden: and? Anodes made of a different material used = ..
