Gummi, be stehen.
Method for developing an electrostatic latent image and apparatus for carrying out the method The present invention relates to a method for developing an electrostatic latent image and an apparatus for carrying out the method.
In electrophotography, a latent electrostatic image is created on a photoconductive insulating material carried by a conductive layer. For example, one can see the entire surface of the photoconductive insulating layer uniformly with an electrostatic charge and then expose it under a transparent original so that the parts of the layer that were exposed to light are discharged, while the electrostatic charge in those parts of the Layer is retained where the exposure was insufficient for discharge. The portions of the layer still charged are then developed by depositing finely divided material on it.
A process usable for carrying out the present process electrophotographic Re production material can be prepared by placing on an electrically conductive surface, for. B. a metal foil, an insulating layer of photoconductive material applies.
Various methods of making photoconductive insulating layers are known. So you can z. B. selenium, sulfur, zinc oxide or organic substances such as anthracene or anthraquinone, ver use, these photoconductive substances dissolve or disperse these photoconductive substances together with a soluble binder in organic solvents and then apply them to the surface. It is also known to produce the photoconductive insulating layers in such a way that the photoconductive substances and the layer-forming binders are dispersed in water and the aqueous dispersions are applied to the electrically conductive substrates, e.g. B.
Metal foils, applies and lets dry.
According to a known method for developing latent electrostatic images, a developer is used which consists of a finely divided powder dispersed in a highly dielectric liquid. Development is carried out either by dipping the electrophotographic material provided with an electrostatic image into the developing liquid, pouring the liquid over the image side of the material, or by spreading the developing liquid onto the image side of the electrophotographic material with the aid of a roller or other application device.
A suitable liquid developer consists e.g. B. from a mixture of finely divided, the electrostatic attraction subject material and polyethylene, dispersed in a liquid carbon as a carrier, or from a mixture of finely divided pigment and an alkyd resin, which is dispersed in a liquid, a developer of high electrical Resistance forms. Liquid developers of this type are described in American Patent Nos. 2 891911 and 2 907 674 be.
The solvents and dispersants suitable for use in liquid developers are usually either flammable, toxic, or strongly smelling. Liquid developers cannot therefore be used safely in small, poorly ventilated rooms, and even if ventilation is good, there is a risk of ignition from sparking due to static electricity.
In the inventive method, electrophotographic materials such. B. plates, and liquid developers of the type described above are used ver.
The inventive method for the development of a latent electrostatic image to cut formats of electrophotographic Ma terials, in which the electrophotographic material is passed through a development zone and at the same time the image-bearing side of the electrophotographic material is continuously brought into contact with a liquid developer while at the same time a prevents electrostatic discharge, is characterized in that the moistened material is then transported directly to a heating zone, which is isolated from the development zone,
that the vapors arising in the heating zone are diverted by a gas stream leading out of the heating zone, that the image is dried and fixed in the heating zone and the dried electrophotographic material is finally conveyed out of the heating zone.
A device for carrying out the method consists of a housing, a with the interior of the housing in connection Abzugsvor direction, a separating device that divides the interior of the housing into several chambers, a device housed in one of the chambers applicator for a liquid, one in Another chamber housed heater and the walls of the housing through passages on a path leading through the application chamber and the heating chamber.
The process can be carried out in such a way that a plate is provided with a latent electrostatic image according to one of the known methods or in another way and developed in an apparatus of the type described below with the aid of a liquid developer.
The development and fixation of the electrostatically generated image can be carried out in a housing which contains transport, development and fixation devices that work under the action of directed gas streams, whereby the resulting flammable, toxic or strong during development and fixation odorous gases or vapors are safely removed from the housing.
In the following, the inventive method and an apparatus for executing the method are explained with reference to the drawing, in wel cher, for example, an apparatus for executing the method is shown. The device for developing a latent electrostatic image consists of an essentially rectangular housing 1, which consists of four walls 2 that taper in their upper part and continue as a trigger 4 or are connected to a trigger 4 so that they form a kind of hood that sits on a base plate 5 and thus tightly closes the space in between.
A partition 6 extends from the base plate 5 into the housing 1 and ends essentially below the trigger 4, so that two separate chambers 7 and 8 are formed. The base plate 5 is provided with channels 9 which are shaped as ge as the lower edges 10 of the walls 2, and the lower edges 10 of the walls 2 snap into these channels. The chamber 7 expediently contains two elongated, parallel to one another to support rollers 11 and 12, which are arranged in the longitudinal direction of the chamber 7 one above the other. The rollers are fixed at a certain distance from the wall 2 up_d of the partition wall 6, and their mutual position makes it possible to drive one roller by means of the other.
There is also a gap between the rollers and the walls, which run perpendicular to the roller axes. The roller 11 is made of electrically conductive material, e.g. Stainless steel, and is suitably either grounded to the housing 1 or positively or negatively charged. The conductive roller must be earthed or positively or negatively charged in order to prevent the surface carrying the electrostatic image from being discharged during the development process through contact with the roller. The roller 12 can be made of conduct or non-conductive material, e.g. B.
Rubber, stand. Furthermore, a useful elongated, we sentlichen semi-cylindrical trough 13 made of electrically conductive material, which has the same charge as the roller 11, mounted in the chamber 7, into which the roller 11 is immersed in part, deep enough to the to receive liquid developer 14 contained in the trough 13.
The chamber 8 contains at least one, but better two elongated heating elements 15 and 16, e.g. B. two electrical resistance heating elements, which are arranged par allel one above the other. The two heating elements are provided with reflectors 17 and 18 which are arranged in such a way that the infrared radiation from one heating element is directed onto the other heating element, so that the space between the heating elements is heated. If only one heating element is used, the associated reflector is arranged in such a way that the infrared rays are directed downwards into the chamber 8.
The two reflectors have a substantially semi-cylindrical shape and extend parallel to the heating elements 15 and 16. The heating elements are mounted in the longitudinal direction of the chamber 8 at a distance from the wall parallel to the roll axis and the partition wall and to the run perpendicular to the roll axis Housing walls which together form the chamber 8. The main purpose of the partition wall 6 is to protect the developed device housed in the chamber 7 from the heat generated by the heating elements 15 and 16.
The slots 19 and 20 are located in opposite walls of the housing 1, and the slot 21 in the partition wall 6. These slots are arranged one behind the other, preferably horizontally, i. H. parallel to the base plate 5; however, they can also form an inclined line to the base plate together. They are arranged so that electrophotographic plates inserted into the machine through these slots are passed between the rollers 11 and 12 and the heating elements 15 and 16.
A cooling and condensing coil 22 is also housed in the housing 1, preferably in the fume cupboard 4 of the housing or in the upper part of the tapering housing walls 3. The ends 23 and 24 of the cooling coil 22 lead through another opposite walls of the housing into the open, see above that a cooling liquid or a cooling gas can be passed through the coil. A suction fan 25 and the associated motor are expediently mounted inside the hood 4 above the condensing coil 22. A first drip pan 27 is located in the housing 1 below the condensing and cooling coil 22. A second, larger drip pan 28 is mounted in the housing below the smaller drip pan 27.
While the larger drip tray, as ersicht Lich from the figure, is attached to two opposing walls 2 of the housing 1, there is a distance between the other two sides of the housing and the drip tray 28 to allow the gases in the lower parts of the housing to be vented by the trigger 4 to make possible. The side walls of the drip trays 27 and 28 can be provided with openings 29.
When the apparatus is in operation, the heating elements 15 and 16 are provided with electrical energy and the fan 25 and the roller 11 are electrically driven. The roller 11 rotates in the liquid developer 14. A coolant is passed through the cooling coil 22. A sheet of electrophotographic material 30 of the type described above on which an electrostatic image has been formed is inserted between upper and lower dielectric guide plates 31 and 32 mounted in slot 19.
Corresponding guide plates 33 and 34 and 35 and 36 are housed in the slots 20 and 21. The electrophotographic material is introduced into the chamber 7 and between the two rollers 11 and 12, the rotating roller 11, which is moistened with the developer solution from the trough 13, applies the developer solution to the image under the action of the pressure roller 12 bearing side of the electrophotographic material 30 is applied.
Since the rollers 11 and 12 rotate in the opposite direction, the electrophotographic material is conveyed further by them between the dielectric plates 35 and 36, which are located in the slot in the partition 6, and from there into the drying and drying areas Fixing chamber B. While the electrophotographic material is passed between the heating elements 15 and 16 in the chamber 8, it is efficiently heated, dried and fixed by the heat generated by the heating elements 15 and 16, and the dried and fixed material is then led out between the non-conductive plates 33 and 34 from the housing.
While the electrophotographic material is heated, dried and fixed, vapors of the solvent or dispersant used for the liquid developer are generated. By means of the suction fan 25 in the hood 4, however, a directed gas flow or an air flow is generated from the air entering through the slots 19 and 20 and directed upwards through the hood 4.
In this way, the poisonous gases or vapors are carried away by the draft and safely guided out of the housing. As soon as the vapors pass through the cooling coil 22, they are effectively condensed and the resulting condensation drips into the drip pans 27 and 28. Here it is either collected or directed back into the developer cavity 13. This happens e.g. B. with the help of the Rohrlei lines 27 'and 28', which lead from the drip trays 27 and 28 to the trough 13, so that the condensate speed automatically flows back into the trough.
The pipes 27 'and 28' are conveniently located on the inner wall of the housing 1 so as not to hinder the electrophotographic material on its way through the housing.
