Carton packing
The present invention relates to a cardboard packaging intended, for example, to contain an electron tube or other fragile object.
The object of this invention is to create a cardboard package coming in a single piece, which can be transported folded and flat, the package once opened having a damper assembly capable of protecting the object engaged in the package against. the shocks that the latter can undergo.
For this, the packaging according to the invention, which is formed from a piece of cardboard having four adjacent walls hinged one on the other, is characterized in that it comprises a damping assembly consisting of partition elements hinged on two opposite side walls of the package along lines distinct from the edges of the package, these partition elements being separated from each other and extending away from the walls when the package is opened in order to allow the engagement of a fragile object between them to protect it against the shocks to which the packaging is subjected.
In a preferred embodiment of the packaging according to the invention, the partition elements are articulated on two opposite side walls of the packaging, they are parallel to themselves and to the other side walls of the packaging and each of these partition elements comprises shutters cut from the material which forms this partition element and slightly bent outwardly of this partition around parallel fold lines so as to be able to hold in place an object engaged between the partition elements of packaging and having lateral dimensions greater than the distance between these partition elements.
In addition, these shutters may end on this side of the ends of the partition element considered so that the object engaged between said partitions is prevented from moving longitudinally by the end edges of the opening made in the partition by the shutters. .
In addition, each of said partitions may have tabs cut and bent at the two ends of the flaps so as to constitute damping elements acting axially.
In another embodiment, the locations of the lines of contact between the partition elements and the side walls may each be located in the vicinity of one of the corners of the package.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, different embodiments of the packaging according to the invention.

fig. 11 is a cross-sectional view taken along line 11-11 of FIG. 10.
We see in fig. 1 a flat piece of cardboard 10 cut so as to allow the constitution from this cardboard sheet of a rectangular packaging. This cardboard sheet 10 comprises a portion 12 intended to form a rectangular box and a portion 14 intended to form damping elements housed inside this box.
The portion 12 comprises four rectangular walls 16, 18, 20 and 22 of the same surface joined to each other by one of their long sides, the latter being designated respectively by lines 24, 26, and 28 which represent fold lines.
The portion 12 further comprises end tongues 30 and 32 which extend to both ends of the two walls 18 and 22 and which join these walls along fold lines 34 and 36. At one end of the wall 20 which extending between the walls 18 and 22 extends a rectangular tab 38 intended to complete with the tabs 30 and 32 located at the corresponding end of the walls 18 and 22 the closure of the package at one of its ends.
The tongue 38 is separated from the wall 20 by a fold line 40. On the other hand, the tongues 30 and 32 located at the other end of the walls 18 and 22 ensure with another tongue 38 located at the corresponding end of the wall 16 closing the other end of the packaging. Each of the tabs 38 has an end rim 42 which is intended to be folded back along a line 44. Finally, the portion 12 comprises a strip 46 which is intended to be folded back along a line 48 and which is adjacent to the wall 22 on the side opposite to the wall 20.
The portion 14 of the piece of cardboard 10 comprises a generally rectangular partition member 50 which is adjacent to the strip 46 and which is intended to be folded along a line 52 which limits this strip. On the other side of this element 50 extends a strip 56 intended to be folded back along a line 54 which joins the strip 56 to the rectangular element 50. The strip 56 is itself adjacent to an element of partition 60, the shape of which is symmetrical to that of the element 50 and which is intended to be folded along a line 58. Finally, the portion 14 ends in a strip 62 connected to the partition element 60 by a line 64. The width of the partition elements 50 and 60 is substantially equal to that of the side walls 18 and 22 of the portion 12 while the strip 56 has a width which is much less than that of the walls 16 and 20.
The two partition elements 50 and 60 are cut longitudinally by a slot 66 and which extends between two end slots perpendicular to the slot 66, and designated by 68 and 70. The latter are located near the end edges of the partition elements 50 and 60. With the slots 66, they define flaps 74 which can be folded up along lines 72.
The slits 66 extend to the other side of the slit 70 to another transverse slit 76 shorter than the slit 70 so as to delimit tabs 80 which can be folded along oblique fold lines 78 each connecting a end of a slot 70 at the corresponding end of the corresponding slot 76.
At the other end of the flaps 74, the partitions 50 and 60 still have short slots 82 which extend in the extension of the fold line 72 and a U-shaped slot 86, each end of which is connected to the end of the fold line. the corresponding slot 82 by a fold line 84 parallel to the slots 68 and 70. These slots 82 and 86 define a tongue 88 which can be extracted from each of the partitions 50 and 60. In addition, the slots 68 and 82 as well as the lines folding 84 define another tongue 90 which is intended to be extracted from the other side of the partition while remaining in the extension of the tongue 88.
The piece of cardboard 10 is intended to form a package 1 0a (Fig. 2), the different elements of which each correspond to one of the elements of the original piece of cardboard, the corresponding elements being designated by the same reference signs, provided with the index a.
To form the box shown in FIG. 2, glue is applied to the strips 56 and 62, on one side of these strips, as well as on the strip 46 on the other side. The strip 62 is then folded back along the line 64 in a direction such that its face coated with glue is on the outside. The partition 50 is folded back around the line 54 relative to the strip 56 so as to cover the latter as well as a part of the partition 60 after which the strip 46 is folded around the line 52 so as to extend into the direction opposite to the strip 62, the face of this strip 46 which carries the adhesive also being on the outside.
Then, the side wall 20 is folded around the line 28 above the strip 56 so that the face of this strip which carries the glue comes to rest against the central part of the wall 20. Finally, the wall 16 is folded around. of line 24 so as to cover the strips 62 and 46 and glue them.
It then suffices to open the element thus obtained and which constitutes a box folded back on itself to obtain the packaging 10a. It consists of a box
12a, with four walls 16a, 18a, 20a and 22a, the longitudinal edge of the wall 16a which is opposite to the wall 18a being fixed to the strip 46a. This box 1 0a comprises the usual end closure tabs (Fig. 4) constituted by tabs 30a and 32 as well as the cover 38a provided with the rim 42a. When these end elements are in place, the box stands by itself in a relatively rigid position while when open, the box can be folded up.
Inside the box 12a extends a damping element 14a which comprises two parallel partitions 50a and 60a located at a distance from each other which corresponds to the width of the strip 56a, the latter being glued. to the wall 20a. The partition 50a is located at a distance from the corresponding wall equal to the width of the strip 46a. The latter is glued to the wall 16a. Further, the partitions 50a and 60a can pivot on the walls f6a and 20a along lines which are located some distance from the corners of the box 12a.
Package 10a is intended to contain an electron tube. It is dimensioned so that the distance between the partitions 50a and 60a is markedly less than the diameter of this tube, the outline of which is shown in phantom by line T in FIG. 3.
When this tube is introduced into the packaging, its side wall pushes the flaps 74a outwards so that the free edges of these flaps can abut against the side walls 1 8a and 22a (fig.
3). In this way, they form an elastic suspension of the tube T and keep it out of contact with the walls 16a and 20a.
As seen in fig. 4, the domed upper end of the tube T causes the tabs 90a to move outwardly, which causes the corresponding tabs 88a to pivot inwardly and prevents the tube from coming into contact with the end closing elements of the tube. box.
Likewise, the lower end of the tube causes the tongues 80a to move outwardly and this end presses against the edges of the partitions 50a and 60a through the slots 76 of the part 10.
If, after engagement of the electron tube in the package 10a, the top cover is glued or otherwise secured in the closed position, the package is secured against any damage since the tube cannot be removed from below without 'This results in partial destruction of the packaging or at least of the damping elements 14a of this packaging.
This property of the packaging described provides a guarantee against any substitution of a new object by a worn object, after the packaging has been closed.
It will be noted that the damping elements 14cor described above ensure the maintenance of the electron tube or in general the article contained in the packaging in a position where it is out of contact with the four side walls of the box i 2a as well as with the end closure elements.
As a result, the article in question is protected against impacts. Further, the package 10a can be stored and transported in the flattened and folded position and erected in the position shown in FIG. 2, only when the article which it is to contain is introduced into this packaging.
The packaging shown in fig. 5, and denoted by 10b, is generally similar to the package 1 0a and its different parts are denoted by the same reference signs provided with the letter b.
In this package, the tabs 88b of the damper device extend beyond the upper edges of the partitions 50b and 60b so that when the cover tabs 30b and 32b as well as the cover 38b are folded back to close the box at its top. , these tongues 32b and 30b press on the upper edges of the tongues 88b to press them inwards and bring them closer to one another. As a result, these tabs completely prevent any contact of the tube T with the upper end of the box.
Although the packages 10a and 10b have been shown with tabs 88a and 88b only at one end of their cushioning device, such tabs may be provided at both ends.
In fig. 6 is shown a sheet of cardboard 101 intended to form a package 101a shown in FIG. 7. The cardboard sheet 101 comprises a portion 12 identical to that of the sheet 10 and the different parts of which are designated by the same reference signs. As a variant, instead of the tongues 30 and 32 being integral with the walls 16 and 20 respectively, they could also be integral with the walls 18 and 22, as in FIG. 1, the cover 38 as well as the bottom of the box may be integral with either the walls 18 and 22 as in FIG.
6, or walls 16 and 20 as in FIG. 1.
In addition, the cardboard sheet 101 comprises a portion 114, intended to form a damper. This portion comprises a rectangular element 92 which is integral with the strip 46 from which it is separated by a fold line 94. This rectangular portion 92 has two fold lines 96 and 98 which are parallel to the line 94, the distances between the lines 94 and 96 on the one hand, and 96 and 98 on the other hand, being equal to and less than the width of the sides 16, 18, 20 and 22.
Between the fold line 98 and the adjacent longitudinal edge of the rectangular portion 92 extends a strip 100 as well as a tongue 102 located in the center of the strip 100.
Slots 104 and 106 are made in portion 92, from line 98 to line 94. These two slits divide rectangular portion 92 into a central part 108 located between these two slits and two end portions 110 and 112 extending respectively on either side of part 108.
To form the package 101a of FIG. 7, glue is applied to the strips 100 and 46 as well as to the tongue 102, the glue being applied to the tongue 102 on the side opposite to that where it is applied to the strips 100 and 46; then the cardboard sheet is folded. In the finished packaging shown in fig. 7, the different parts of the cardboard sheet are designated by the same reference signs with the letter a. To fold the sheet 101, one begins by folding the strip 100 around the line 98 so that the unglued surface comes to the outside. The unglued surface of the tongue 102 rests against the portion 108 on one side of the line 96.
Next, the lateral sides 22 and 20 are folded around the line 48 in the direction opposite to the glued surface of the strip 46 so that the glue with which the strip 100 is coated comes into contact with the side wall 20. Next, the walls 18 and 16 are folded around line 26, so that the free edge of wall 16 comes into contact with the glue with which strip 46 is coated. This gives a flattened and folded box which is opened by making pivot the walls 20a and 22a so as to separate them from the walls 16a and 18a.
During the opening of the box, the parts 110a and 1 12a of the damper assembly 1 14a bend in one direction relative to their center line 96a while the part 108a is biased so as to bend in the opposite direction, from the makes the adhesion between the part 108a and the tongue 102a as well as the adhesion of the strip 100a to the wall 20a. Note that the fold lines 94 and 98 form pivot lines 94a and 98a which connect the parts 108a, 110a and 112a of the damper assembly to the opposite walls 16a and 20a of the box.
It will also be noted that these joints 94a and 98a are located at a certain distance from the angles of the box 12a, but are relatively close to the angles defined by the walls 16a, and 22a as well as by the walls 18a and 20a, these angles being opposites on a diagonal of the box. Further, since the distances between the center line 96a of the parts 108a, 110a and 112a and the pivot lines 94a and 98a are less than the width of each of the walls of the box 12a, the parts 108a, 110a and 112a are arranged obliquely. relative to the sides of the box when open (Fig. 8).
Thus the various wall elements of the damper assembly 114a are located at a certain distance from the adjacent sides of the box 12a, so that when a tube T shown in phantom in FIG. 8, is engaged between the partition elements 108a, 110a and 112a, this tube is maintained at a certain distance from the side walls of the box. Thus, it is protected against shocks that the box could undergo.
The damper assembly shown in FIGS. 6, 7 and 8 can extend over the entire length of the package. As a variant, it could also extend over approximately half the length of the box, as in the case of the packaging shown in FIGS. 9, 10 and 11.
As seen in fig. 9, the sheet 101 'intended to form such a package still comprises a part 12 intended to form the box 12a and identical to the part 12 shown in FIG. 1. It further comprises a part 114 'intended to form the damper assembly of the packaging and similar to the part 114 of FIG. 6, although it only extends over half the length of the strip 46. The different parts of the element 114 'are designated by the same reference signs as the corresponding elements of the part 114, but are provided with an index. Thus, the part 114 'comprises partition elements 108', 110 'and 112' separated by slots 104 'and 106'.
It further comprises a strip 100 'which borders a fold line 98' and a tab 102 'located in the center of the strip 100'. In addition, the part 114 'comprises an arm 104 which starts from the strip 100' which is limited by a fold line 106. This arm 104 ends with a flange 108.
To form the package 101'a of FIGS. 10 and 11, from sheet 101 'of FIG. 9, we start by depositing glue on the tabs 102 'and 108 on one side of the sheet and on the strips 100' and 46 on the other side after which the sheet 101 'is folded in the same way as the sheet 101 of fig. 6. As the strip 100 'is folded back onto line 98' the tab 102 'adheres to part 108' on one side of line 96 'while flange 108 adheres to part 110' of the other side of the 96 'fold line.
When unfolding the box (fig. 10 and 11), the arm 104a extends laterally through the lower part of the damper assembly 114'a between the edge of the strip 100'a fixed to the wall 20n and element 110'a of the damper assembly. The tube
T shown in phantom in fig. January 1 can thus be introduced into the damper assembly. It is surrounded by the partition elements 108'a and 112'a which keep it out of contact with the side walls of the box 12a. The base of the tube rests on the side arm 104a which keeps it out of contact with the closing elements of the box.
When cutting the sheets 101 'from a strip or sheet of cardboard, it is noticed that the part 114' of each sheet can be placed near and in addition to another sheet, which considerably reduces the amount of material used by the packaging.
It is also evident that the sheet 101 of FIG. 6 in which the part 114, intended to form the damper assembly extends over the entire length of the part 12 may also be provided with an arm similar to the part 104 of the sheet 101 'and extending from the strip 100. This arm must be aligned laterally with the portion of the partition 110, so that the damper assembly 114a of the packaging shown in FIG. 7 also has a lateral arm at the lower part of the shock absorber so as to keep the tube T embraced by the shock absorber assemblies out of contact with the lower closing members of the box 12a.
The packaging described above could also be shaped so as to receive another fragile object, the latter being kept out of contact with the side walls of the box.
