<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Magnetic alloy steel The present invention relates to a magnetic alloy steel, and more particularly a steel having a high elastic limit associated with good notch toughness, for the manufacture of large-size forgings for generator rotors.
In the electric power industry, there is a demand for a strong and tough magnetic steel suitable for making large forgings of generator rotors which produce the rotating field of large steam turbine driven generators. These large rotor forgings range from 30 to 178 cm in diameter and from 4.6 to 10.7 m in length. Steel rotors must be free from internal defects so that they can withstand high loads in service.
They must be tenacious (not fragile) in order to oppose the propagation of cracks or internal or external defects that may be present or appearing during service. The propagation of these cracks or defects leads to a sudden rupture in service. In addition, these field rotor forgings must have a high magnetic permeability (B / H or slope of the magnetization curve) to minimize the current required to generate the desired magnetic field.
The type of steel commonly used for high speed generator rotor forgings is nickel-molybdenum-vanadium steel containing 0.18-0.33% carbon, 0.40-0.70% manganese. , 0.15 to 0.40% silicon, at least 2.50 0/0 nickel, 0.20 to 0.70% molybdenum, 0.03 to 0,
12% vanadium, and sometimes up to 0.75% chromium, when higher mechanical strength is desired:
Such steel ordinarily exhibits a yield point with 0.02% permanent elongation of about 45.7 to 63.3 kg / mm-, a transition temperature of the appearance of the break (based on a shear break appearance at 50 0/0) of 15.6 to 930 C, and a magnetizing force (H) of 236 to 512 amp-turns per cm to produce a magnetic induction (B) of 20,000 gauss.
This steel is far from having the properties desired by manufacturers of steam turbine generators for generator rotors.
A steel has been found exhibiting these properties after forging and tempering, that is to say a yield strength of 63.3 kg / mm2 (permanent elongation of 0.02 0/0), a transition temperature the appearance of the break less than 10 C (50 0/0 at shear), a magnetic permeability corresponding to a magnetizing force of less than 285 amp-turns per cm to produce a magnetic induction of 20,000 gauss, and a tendency to practically no one to become fragile through income.
The steel, object of the invention, consists practically, in addition to iron, of 0.17 to 0.26% of carbon, 0.20 to 0.40% of manganese, 0.15 to 0.40 % silicon, 3.50 to 4.25% nickel, 0.20 to 0,
50% molybdenum and 0.18 to 0.40% vanadium. It can also contain up to 0.50% chromium and up to 0.10% aluminum (soluble in acid).
The fracture appearance transition temperature is determined using V-notch Charpy machine samples. The fracture appearance transition temperature differs from the ductility transition temperature, which is more common use.
The transition temperature of the appearance of the break is determined by breaking samples at different temperatures and determining from the appearance of the breaks at what temperature the steel breaks in a 50% delectable and 50% brittle manner. . Ductile breaks have a gray and fibrous appearance,
but the fragility breaks have a silvery and granular appearance. Comparing
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
on samples broken with a table, the ductility or relative brittleness of the break can be readily determined. In contrast, the ductility transition temperature is ordinarily determined by measuring the energy absorbed by breaking samples at different temperatures and determining at what temperature the amount of energy absorbed sharply increases or decreases.
The transition temperature of the fracture appearance gives a more reliable and reproducible indication of the toughness at the size of forging steels. In the following, the expression transition temperature will be used to denote the transition temperature of the appearance of the break.
It is preferable that the ingots of the steel according to the invention intended for the forging of rotors are melted under vacuum.

Steels A, B and C have compositions outside the limits prescribed by the invention.
Steel A is similar to the rotor forging steel previously mentioned in common use in industry. It differs from this rotor forging steel only by its lower manganese content. Steel B is similar to steel A except for a higher nickel content. C steel is similar to A steel except for a higher vanadium content. The results obtained with these steels show that the desired properties cannot be obtained without simultaneously increasing the nickel and vanadium contents.
When the nickel and vanadium contents are increased simultaneously in the required proportion and when the manganese content is low (steel D according to the invention), the desired properties are obtained.
Forged bars of these four steels were homogenized 2 hrs at 9270 C, air-cooled to room temperature, austenitized 4 hrs at $ 16 C, cooled to 316 C at a rate of about 67 C per hour (approximately the prevailing cooling rate at a location a few cm below the surface of a standard diameter 114 cm rotor forging), then allowed to cool freely in a furnace to room temperature. This constitutes the normalization process to which all samples have been subjected.
With steels cast under atmospheric conditions, it is necessary to stop between 232 and 3300 C in order to prevent cracking or chipping. However, the new steel can be air cooled to room temperature without inconvenience, provided it is vacuum cast, and this even has a beneficial effect on notch toughness without lowering the yield strength. .
The sample blanks for the tensile test were tempered for 24 hours at 616 or 5770 C and air cooled. Temper within the range of 571 to 5820 C is preferred. Samples for the tensile test (12.83 mm in diameter) were machined from the blanks and tested at room temperature. The following results were obtained.

After normalization, part of the sample blanks for the magnetic test were made to return for 24 hours at 627 C, they were allowed to cool freely in the oven, they were heated for 2.4 hours at 604 C, then they were a. allowed to cool freely again in the oven (both cooling down to approx.840 C / h)
. The other sample blanks for the magnetic test were tempered at 599 and 577 ° C and were similarly cooled. The samples for the magnetic test (302 mm wide by 6.35 mm thick by 305 mm long) were machined from the blanks after tempering and tested at room temperature. The following results were obtained;

in the oven to room temperature). Samples for the Charpy V-notch impact test were machined from the blanks and tested at temperatures between -73.3 and 26.70 C. The following results were obtained.
After normalization and tempering, the steel according to the invention exhibits a microstructure consisting essentially of ferrite and bainite.
The above results show that the desired yield strength with 0.02% permanent elongation (63.3 kg / mm2) is not obtained with steel A, but is obtained with steel. B returned to 5770 C. In addition, the magnetic properties of steel B are very good (magnetizing force of 246 ampere-turns per cm). However, the transition temperature of steel B, while good, is still relatively high (15.6 to 23.9 C).
However, by increasing the vanadium content from 0.10 to 0.22, a marked improvement in the transition temperature was obtained (C and D steels). Steel C, which contains only 2.97% nickel, has a low transition temperature (-12.20 C) but also has a low yield strength (55.5 kg / mm2) just like steel AT.
It can be concluded that 2.97% nickel or 0.22% vanadium, by themselves, does not give a yield strength of 63.3 kg / mm2 with 0.02% elongation- permanently.
By increasing the nickel content from 2.97% to over 3.50% and the vanadium content to about 0.18%, however, the desired combination of high mechanical strength, good cut tenacity and permeability has been obtained. high magnetic (relatively low magnetizing force).
(Steel D.) In addition, steel D has little tendency to become brittle under the effect of tempering, as can be seen from the increase of only 11, P, C in the transition temperature of the samples. cooled slowly from tempering, relative to the transition temperature of samples tempered from tempering. It is recognized that the low manganese content of D steel contributes significantly to its relatively low tendency to become brittle through tempering.

vanadium, increase the mechanical strength of nickel-molybdenum-vanadium steel is not fully understood, but it is assumed that nickel strengthens ferrite and that vanadium, in a content greater than about 0.18%, improves toughness at notching of nickel-molybdenum-vanadium steel by one or more of the following mechanisms 1)
Refining of austenitic and ferritic grain size. (The austenite grain size of steels containing 0.22% vanadium was ASTM 7 or finer, and the ferrite grain size was 8 1/2 or finer.
An austenite grain size corresponding to ASTM No. 4 or finer is desirable, as this fineness of grain is necessary for satisfactory ultrasonic examination.) 2) Combination with carbon, and therefore lowering the proportion of carbon in solution .
3) Possible decrease in the tendency of nickel-molybdenum-vanadium steel to become brittle by tempering.
It is recognized that the low manganese content decreases the tendency of steel to become brittle by tempering.
