1. o-Chlorobenzylamine
2. p-Bromobenzylamine
3. p-Diméthylaminobenzylamine
4. α-(p-Fluorophényl)-éthylamine
5. a-(o-Chlorophényl)-éthylamine
6. a-(p-Chlorophényl)-éthylamine

EMI3.1

Manufacturing process for new compounds of the Werner complex type
The invention relates to a process for manufacturing chemical compounds of the type Complexes of
Werner insoluble or very slightly soluble in water at room temperature.
The compounds are represented by the formula
MA., Xn in which M is a divalent metal whose atomic number is greater than 12, A is a monovalent polyatomic anion, and X is a phenylalkylamine whose alkyl group comprises 1 to 12 carbon atoms and whose benzene ring carries a polar substituent, n is 2 or 4.
The complexes which it is preferable to obtain are those in which M represents a metal whose atomic number varies between 25 and 29, that is to say nickel, cobalt, iron, manganese or copper. More particularly still cobalt and nickel are preferable, but cobalt has the disadvantage of giving complexes sensitive to oxidation and, therefore, unstable. The most suitable metal will therefore be nickel.
It is also preferred to prepare the complexes in which the monovalent anion chosen from those which combine with the metal used to give a water-insoluble Werner complex, is a triatomic anion which comprises only one carbon atom, bonded directly to a nitrogen atom, i.e. cyanates, thiocyanates and selenocyanates in normal or iso forms.
Among these anions, it will be noted that thiocyanate in normal or iso form is the preferred flag.
The position of the amine function on the alkyl chain is also important and the alpha position with respect to the benzene ring is preferred.
The properties of the final complex depend to some extent on the number of carbons in the alkyl chain, mainly due to variations in molecular weight. In general, the length of the alkyl chain will have no particular influence on the complex and its properties and the use of alkyl chains with more than 12 carbons is perfectly possible.
The process according to the invention is preferably applied to the preparation of the compound corresponding to the formula Ni (SCN) 2Xn in which X is a phenylalkylamine in which the benzene ring bears a polar substituent, in which the alkyl group comprises 1 to 11 carbon atoms. carbon and in which n is 2 or 4 and the amine group is in the alpha position relative to the nucleus.
The part of the alkyl chain located after the carbon carrying the amine function is preferably a primary group, that is to say that, when this chain will contain 2 carbons and more, its beta carbon will carry at least 2 hydrogen atoms.
The polar radical attached to the nucleus is in an indeterminate position with respect to the alkyl chain, but the substitution is preferably done in decreasing order: para, metha, ortho.
Preferred polar groups are those which do not react with the amine function either by salt formation or chemical reaction, which do not interfere with the coordinating power of the amino group or which do not interfere with the formation of complexes by steric hindrance.
The preferred radicals are as follows: halogens, trifluoromethyl-, hydroxy-, ni.trocyano-, carbamyl-, sulfamyl-, as well as the alkoxy- and charbolalkoxy- radicals having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms and the N, N radicals. -amino dialkyls in which the alkyl part contains 1 to 2 carbon atoms. Halogens are the preferred radicals.
The following amines can be used in the process according to the invention:
1.o-Chlorobenzylamine
2.p-Bromobenzylamine
3.p-Dimethylaminobenzylamine
4. α-( p-Fluorophenyl) -ethylamine

EMI3.1
All of these amines have little or no ammonia odor. They differ greatly in this property from heterocyclic nitrogenous bases which have a strong foul odor.
They are also distinguished by a low vapor pressure which greatly reduces the danger of ignition.
The process according to the invention is characterized by the fact that an MA2 salt is brought into contact with an amine of formula X.
The MA salt can also be obtained in situ from 2 different salts containing the M and A ions.
The reaction takes place according to the scheme:
NiCl2 + KSCN + 4X = Ni (SCN) X4 + 2KCL
The precipitation of the complex constantly shifts the balance to the right.
It has also been observed that the introduction of a relatively small amount of hydrocarbon into the aqueous medium facilitates the formation of the complex and leads to a purer complex.
These results are explained by the lipophilic character of the complex which, by absorbing the hydrocarbon, protects itself from hydrolysis and its harmful effects on crystallization.
As the quoted hydrocarbon does not react, it is obvious that a very large number of them may be suitable. By way of example, we will cite: pentane, heptane, cyclohexane.
The MA2X complexes, and more especially the Ni9SCN) 2Xn complexes, are very little or not soluble in water. Usually, they are slightly soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons at room temperature, this solubility depending on their molecular weight.
MA2X4 4-base complexes are generally soluble in polar organic solvents.
The new complexes described have many uses.
They can be dissolved in polar organic solvents and thus allow the introduction of a metal into this organic medium. The presence of a metal is desired by its catalytic effect, for example for the setting of drying oils or the polymerization of monomers.
Such a solution can also be used for the impregnation of the catalytic masses.
In solid form, the complexes can be used in heterogeneous catalysis or as clathrating agents. They intervene here in the form of 2 bases and 4 bases.
For example, the separation of isomers from a mixture of 3 xylenes is a significant problem in the petrochemical industry since each isomer gives the corresponding phthalic acid by oxidation and these acids are used in the manufacture of many di- and polyesters.
The quality of each of these products depends on the purity of the isomer considered. The clathration makes it easy to achieve this separation with the desired degree of finesse.
Example 1
Preparation of
[Ni (SCN) 2 {α-( p-bromophenyl) -butylamine} 4]
A solution of 5.70 g (0.025 mol) of α-( p-bromophenyl) -butylamine in 100 cc of heptane is added slowly and with stirring at room temperature to a binary mixture comprising 5 cc of heptane and a aqueous solution obtained by dissolving 1.32g (0.0056mole) of NiCl26H2O and 1.11g (0.0114 mole) of KSCN in 3 cc of distilled water.
During this addition a green amorphous precipitate forms which, after stirring, becomes a blue crystalline precipitate which is the complex.
This precipitate is filtered off and washed by stirring in a mixture of 10 cc of heptane and 5 cc of water.
This wash removes any remaining salt or unreacted amine.
The precipitate is filtered again and dried under vacuum in a thin layer at room temperature for two hours.

It will have been observed from the preceding examples that the preparation of the complexes containing only two molecules of the amine is identical to the preparation of the complexes containing four of these molecules except that half the amount of amine is used. The two-base complexes are very stable, which allows rapid drying at 1000 C even under vacuum.
The use of chloroform makes it possible to obtain two-base complexes of higher purity due to the fact that they are generally not soluble in this medium, whereas the four-base complexes are soluble therein and often with decomposition into the two corresponding bases.
Several examples of complexes obtained by the process according to the invention are given in the following tables without, however, being limiting.
