entachlor-2-cyclopentenon, Ootachlormethylencyclopenten, Bis-(pentachlorcyclopentadienyl)- perchlorfulvalen, Hexachlorcyclopentadienpolymer bzw.
Hexachlorcyclopentadien ist eine lichtgelbe Flüs sigkeit mit stechendem Geruch. Hcxachlorcyclopen- tadien besitzt die Formel C;

Insecticidal mixture The present invention relates to an agent for protecting vines that are sensitive to phylloxera vitifolia (Fitch), in particular of the species Phylloxera vitifolia.
The phylloxera is an insect originating from America and has probably always been found in wild wine varieties.
In particular, the species of Phyllaxera vitifolia is of interest. The phylloxera occurs in grapevines in two clearly distinguishable forms. The leaf shape of the phylloxera. Produces. Ball-like nodes on the underside of the leaves,
the so-called leaf galls and the root form of phylloxera live on the roots and cause knot-like swellings or thickenings. The leaf shape is easiest to determine and is commonly found in American wild wines. The root form of the phylloxera cannot be determined without further ado, but this form is the one that causes the greatest damage to the wine cultures.
Although some American types of grapevine are resistant to the phylloxera root form, concord and many other types of grapevine are not resistant to phylloxera and it is not uncommon to find that this vine @ sorGe was damaged by phylloxera.
The leaves of these grape varieties are attacked by phylloxera, if at all. To date, no specific control methods have been found and efforts to protect vine crops have mainly focused on the
Breeding of resistant grapevines directed.
Now that phylloxera has caused severe economic damage to vineyards for over a century, extensive studies have been initiated to find effective means of combating the phylloxera root form, as will be described below.
In 1955 preliminary tests were carried out with hexachlorocyclopentadiene, dibromohexachlorcyolopentene, di # bromotetrichloroethane, dibromotetrachloroethane, n-bromobemzamide, n-bromo-m-chlorobenzamide, pentachloropentadienoic acid, hexa: chlorcyelopenten-2-one, hexachlarcyclopenten:
entachloro-2-cyclopentenone, ootachloromethylene cyclopentene, bis (pentachlorocyclopentadienyl) - perchlorfulvalene, hexachlorocyclopentadiene polymer or mixed polymers with chloroethylene, pentachloroacetoacetyl chloride, bromochloroethylene also Compound C1oCho0 (H -1) carried out to combat the Rebdaus.
These preliminary tests consisted of placing parts of the roots of grapevines severely infected with phylloxera in the middle of a layer of 15.2 cm (6 inches) of pure, untreated soil, which was in 17.6 liter baskets,
were used. More earth was made with the various chemicals in an amount of 2,400 to 4,
480 g / 100 m2 were added and the soil treated with these chemicals was then placed above and below a layer of pure soil, which took up the infected roots of the vines.
The infected roots were removed from the ground after six weeks and examined microscopically for living and viable phylloxera eggs. In the winter of 1956, other compounds, namely 3,4-dichloronitrobenzene, trichlomitrobenzene, 2,3,5,6-tetrachlomitembenzene, 2,3,4,5-tetrachloromitrobenzene,
Tetrachlorothiophene, 3,4-dichlorotrobenzene, tetrachlorobenzene, pentachlomitrobenzene, benzyl disulfide, benzyl tetrasulfide, n-octyl-2,5-dichlorophenyl ether were tested.
As a result of these experiments, the knowledge was obtained that hexachlorocyclopentadiene and its polymers are toxic to phylloxera and were worth further consideration.
Accordingly, in the years 1956, 1957, 1958, attempts to combat the root form of phylloxera, which are described in detail below, were carried out with hexachlorocyclentadiene and its polymers.
Test conditions The test plants were annuals from the Concord vine and were planted in the spring of 1956. A portion of these sticks were lined up at a distance of 30.2 cm (12 inches).
Another part of these sticks was placed in cardboard containers. These containers were cylindrical in shape, 60.4 cm (24 inches) in diameter and 60.4 cm (24 inches) in height. Before the sticks were set, these containers were buried 60.4 cm (24 inches) in the ground. A single stick was placed in each of these containers.
During the summer, phylloxera leaf galls were attached to the roots of these plants. The brood hatching from these leaf galls immediately attached itself to the roots and after only 12 days, knots could be observed on these roots.
Hexachlorocyclopentadiene is a light yellow liquid with a pungent odor. Hxachlorocyclopentadiene has the formula C;
, CI, accordingly has a molecular weight of 272.79 and has the following physical properties: Freezing point 9.6o C Boiling point ------- ---------- .... .
. 2390C at 760 mm refractive index .1.5625 Specific gravity 15.5o / 15.50 C 1.717 Ignition point (open shell) _ 0 Field test 1956 In September a number of the grapevine of infected vines was treated with hexachlorocyclopentadiene in quantities of 1060 and 2123 g / 100 m2.
This fabric was injected into soil spread in a 6 inch (15.34 cm) layer on a 10 inches by 10 inches (25.4 by 25.4 cm) grid.
After six weeks of exposure, the vines were carefully removed from the ground and the number of live insects on each knot counted. No live phylloxera could be found on the roots of the vines treated with an amount of 2123 g / 100 m2. Greenhouse trial 1957 Vines infested by the Rebdau were brought into the greenhouse in January.
These vines were placed in metal containers 30.2 cm (12 inches) in diameter and 40.5 cm (16 inches) deep. When the plants began to grow wax, they were treated with hexachlorocyclopentadiene. Each treatment was repeated three times for each stick. The compound was injected into the soil 20.25 cm (8 ") deep at two 10.1 cm (4") sites from the bottom of the plant.
The treatments carried out and the results achieved are listed in Table I. Satisfactory results were achieved with all treatments under greenhouse conditions. It must be stated that the phylloxera infestation of the vines was low and that this fact may have had some influence on the results obtained.
Field trials 1957 During this year, trials were carried out to obtain information on the dose of hexachlorocyolopentadiene and the depth at which the hexachlorocyclopentadiene is to be added.
The vines used in these experiments were two years old and each plant was placed in a cardboard container. The carried out. Experiments are listed in Table 2.
The treatment was repeated four times per stick. Hexachlorocyalopentadiene was injected into the soil at two locations 15.1 cm (6 inches) from the plant and opposite one another. Six weeks after the treatments carried out, the sticks were removed from the ground.
These results are also given in Table 2. As can be seen in the table, hexachlorocyclopentadiene was relatively ineffective when used in amounts of 280 and 560 g / 100 m2.
Applied at an amount of 1120, 1680 and 2240 g / 100 m, this insecticide greatly reduced the pest infestation. It is interesting to note that injecting the hexachlorocyclopentadiene at 3 "(7.62 cm) depths was as effective as injecting at 6" and 30.5 cm (12 ") depths Inch).
Another series of tests was conducted to determine if the distance from the injection site to the plant had any effect on effectiveness. The vines used were two years old and put in cardboard containers. The compound was used in all tests in an amount of 2240 g / 100 m. Treatment was as follows: 1.
Injections 7.62 cm (3 inches) deep, 20.25-30.5 cm (8-12 inches) deep from the plant; 2.
Injections 6 "deep at 25.4-30.5 cm (10-12") from the plant; 3. Injections 30.5 cm (12 inches) deep at 25.4-30.5 cm (10-12 inches) from the plant; 4. injections 61.0 cm (24 inches) deep at 30.5 cm (12 inches) from the plant; and 5.
Two injection sites that were injected 61 cm (24 inches) deep and 15.25 cm (6 inches) apart on either side of the plant.
Six weeks after the completed treatments, the soil was carefully removed from the roots and both the number and distribution of root nodes with colonies of live insects were determined. The deposition of the root nodes on the roots of a typical treatment
Vine is shown in Figures 2-6. As can be seen, no live insects were found near the injection sites. The results indicated that hexachlorocyclopentad @ iene applied at 2240 g / 100 m 2 was effective around the injection site within a 7-10 inch radius.
The results obtained in the experiments cited above were completed in the spring of 1957 by further experiments. Biennial grapevines were used, separated and set at a distance of 30.5 cm (12 inches) in a single row.
The compound was injected 7.62-15.25 cm (36 inches) deep into soil spread on a 30.5 by 30.5 cm (12 by 12 inch) screen. The treatments were repeated twice and each repetition was done on eight plants. The treatment carried out and the result of this treatment are shown in Table 3.
The results indicate that when used in amounts of 1120, 1680 and 2240 g / 100 m2, hexachlorocyelopentadiene is highly effective against phylloxera. Applied in quantities of 560 g / 100 m2,
Hexachlorocyclopentadiene was not entirely satisfactory in its effect. Injecting the hexachlorocyclopentadiene at 2240 g / 100 m2 to a depth of 7.62 cm (3 inches) had the same effectiveness as injecting the hexachlorocyclopentadiene to a depth of 15.25 inches (6 inches). .
Field trials 1958 In July, a treatment with hexachlorocyclopentadiene in an amount of 1120, 1680 and 2240 g / 100 m2 at an injection depth of 7.62 cm (3 inches) and 15.25 cm (6 Inches) at a distance of 30.5 cm (12 inches).
Quantities of 1120, 1680, 2240 and 3360g / 100m2 of hexachlorocyelopentadiene were also used as an emulsifiable concentrate. Biennial grapevine infested vines set in a single row were used as test plants.
The treatment was carried out three times and each repetition was for: six plants. The treatment carried out and a summary of the results appear in Table 4. The results obtained indicate
