Means for exterminating pests. The control of animal pests can happen in a variety of ways during their various stages of development. Combating the eating and sucking stages, that is to say the larvae and the adult animals, is uneconomical in that the damage has already occurred in some cases. With arthropods as well as with Vermes and llolluskenarten the occurrence of the damage can be ruled out that one disturbs their egg clutches zer. In particular, the destruction of the wintering in the egg stage, such as z. B.
the red spider (Paratetranychus pilosus), the frost moth (Cheimatobia brumata), the aphid (Psylla mali), the aphids, the cherry blossom moth (Argyresthia ephipella), the fruit tree bugs (rhynchotes), the phylloxera vas- tatrix ) and others,
which are otherwise difficult to control during the growing season. The wintering pests in other development stages such. B. spider moths (Hyponomenta species) and various scale insects can be fought in winter before their damaging effects appear. The control of the hibernation stages of gall mites (Eriophyes) is also important, since treatment is no longer possible during the growing season.
The preparations previously used in agriculture during the dormancy period (as so-called winter spraying agents), such as fruit tree carbolineum or dinitrocresols, had, in addition to their partly unsatisfactory ovicidal and larvicidal effects, significant disadvantages. Their use is limited to specific, temporary development stages of the eggs.
Their caustic effects on humans and animals are disadvantageous and unpleasant when used; Just as unpleasant are the strong yellowing of the dinitrocresols and their toxicity, as well as the oily, greasy nature of the fruit tree carbolines. Another disadvantage of the agents mentioned is their harmful effect on the under-use.
It has been found that a combination of diphenyl, pentachlorophenol and diethyl p-nitrophenyl thiophosphate is characterized by excellent ovicidal and otherwise generally favorable toxic properties. and for the control of pest eggs and other hibernating dormant stages of animal pests, in particular of the Ar thropod class, is outstandingly suitable.
The subject of the present patent is a means for destroying pests, characterized by a content of the three components diphenyl, pentachlorophenol and diethyl-p-nitro-phenyl-thiophosphate.
Dipheny 1 has been proposed as an insecticide in the patent literature. Pentaehlorphenol has been proposed as a poison for various uses, such as a bactericide, fungicide, algicide, insecticide and more recently also as an ovicide (Journ. Of Economic Entomol. 39, S, 763, 1946).
Diethyl p-nitrophenyl thiophosphate is one of the most effective insecticides and also known as an acaricide.
A combination of the three components is surprisingly characterized by a greater killing effect on pest eggs than could be expected from the sum of the effects of the individual components.
The table below shows the test results of an acetone solution of the active ingredient components or the combination of Drosophila eggs. The effect of the individual components, the effect of the three possible two-component combinations and the effect of the three-component combination are compared in a vertical row. The total concentration in a real row is constant.
The two-way combinations contain the two individual components in a concentration of <B> 50% </B> each of the specified total concentration, and accordingly the three-way combination contains: l # - the single component. The values are given for total concentrations of 0.05, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5 and 1% active ingredient, the sy ne gistic effect being particularly evident at the lower concentrations of 0.05 and 0.1 tion occurs.

<tb> Pentachlorophenol <SEP> + <SEP> Diphenyl <SEP> + <SEP> Diethyl-p-nitrophenyl thiophosphate <SEP> 90 <SEP> 96 <SEP> 99 <SEP> 100 <SEP> 100 As shown in the table the two-way combination of pentachlorophenol + diphenyl reduces the effect,
likewise the two-way combination pentachlorophenol + diethyl - p - nitrophenyl thiophosphate, at least in the lowest concentration range of 0.05%. The increase in effectiveness of the three-way combination is all the more surprising. Due to the increased effect of the three-way combination, it is possible, please include to reduce the usage concentration to a minimum that has not yet been reached.
This is not only an economic advantage, it also has other significant advantages. by the damaging side effects of the individual components, such. B. the combustion effect of pentachlorophenol against the plant or the poison effect of diethyl p-nitrophen.yl thiophosphate against the consumer can be reduced to a minimum.
The proportions of the individual components can be varied to a certain extent without affecting the synergistic effect. Instead of the 1: 1: 1 proportion, it is also possible to choose the 1: 3: 1 proportion or ratios between these numbers, whereby each of the three individual components can be present in excess. However, should be a value. of 20 or 60, '/ per individual component, based on 100 gÖ of the (reading combination, must not be exceeded or fallen below.
In addition to the excellent ovicidal effect, the combination also has a larvicidal and insecticidal effect, so that practically all stages of development of the pests can be destroyed.
Another advantage. arises from the fungicidal and bactericidal properties of pentaehlorphenol. Furthermore, the good killing effect of pentaehlorphenol against lichens and mosses is not mentioned, which is particularly important in fruit-growing. This makes winter treatment much easier, since combating the hibernating stages of animal pests also means that the fruit trees are cleaned of harmful lichens and mosses and the vines are removed from unnecessary dead bark.
The new combination is thus characterized by broad biological activity. For the purpose of practice has. the use of solutions and in particular of emulsions of the combination mentioned proved to be advantageous, with which a practically almost complete annihilation of the overwintering rest stages is achieved. Emulsions with the finest possible distribution are advantageously used, in particular those which show the Tyndall effect that is typical for colloidal distribution.
Effective emulsifiers must be used to produce the emulsions. There are anion-active, cation-active or not. ionic emulsifiers into consideration.
Examples include: sulfated animal, vegetable or mineral oils, such as castor oil sulfonate, tall oil sulfonate, alcohols esterified and sulfated, unsaturated fatty acids or ethylene oxide condensation products. The amount of emulsifier depends on the other components of the emulsion.
Diethyl p-nitrophenyl thiophosphate is liquid. The other two active components Diphenyl and Pentaelilorphenol have to be used for emulsification. suitable solvents are brought into solution.
The addition of solvents is significant for the effect of the means beyond its purely technical importance. A suitable choice of solvents promotes the penetration of the emulsion through the tough egg shells, signs, etc. into the interior of the resting stages, thereby increasing efficiency.
Solvents and solubilizers (mutual solvents) which can be used include: for example aromatic hydrocarbons, such as benzene, toluene, yylene, hydrogenated naphthalenes, alkylated naphthalenes, anthracene oils or solvent naphtha; aliphatic hydrocarbons with different boiling points (petroleum distillates), e.g. B. Kerosene or Sangajol, also alcohols, z.
B. biityl alcohol; Acetone, mesityl oxide, ethy acetate, phthalic acid ester, phosphoric acid ester, z. B. tricresyl phosphate and other esters, methyl hexalin, etc., but also animal or vegetable oils such as cotton seeds, araehid, sesame, or olive oil and the like.
Diphenyl, pentachlorophenol and diethyl p-nitroplienyl thiophosphate are dissolved as concentrated as possible and this solution is mixed with the emulsifier, possibly with the addition of water. Together with water, this emulsion concentrate gives the ready-to-use emulsion in which the organic solvents effectively support the action of the three active components.
In addition to the solvents mentioned, which themselves have little or no ovicidal or insecticidal effect, it is also possible to achieve a further increase in effectiveness by adding agents which themselves have a more or less ovicidal and insecticidal effect, such as carbon disulphides substance, chloroform, glycerine, higher alcohols such as amyl alcohol or pyridine.
In addition, high-boiling, viscous solvents such as paraffin oil, white oils, lubricating oils or anthracene oil can also be added to the agent, the effect of which is probably based more on enveloping the eggs and sealing them against atmospheric oxygen, whereby the egg is additionally damaged by asphyxiation. A similar effect is also achieved on scale lice.
The production of emulsions can be done by methods known per se. Concentrates, which represent a solution for the production of emulsions, can be obtained by mixing a solution of diphenyl, pentachlorophenol and diethyl p-nitrophenyl thiophosphate with the emulsifier.
Concentrates in emulsion form for the production of diluted, ready-to-use emulsions are produced by means of an emulsifying machine with the emulsifier, the solution of diphenyl, pentachlorophenol and diethyl - p - nitrophenyl - thiophosphate in solvents and water. The amount of emulsifier to be added depends on its emulsifying power.
In general, an emulsifier content of 1 to about 4-0% in the emulsion concentrate is sufficient to ensure a sufficiently stable emulsion. The ready-to-use emulsion is obtained by diluting this emulsion concentrate with water while stirring. Depending on the content of active components in the concentrate and the degree of dilution, emulsions of different concentrations are obtained.
With a suitable concentration and mixing ratio of active substance, solvent, emulsifier and water, easy, opalescent to milky, highly stable, aqueous emulsions can be obtained. The active substance content of the use emulsion can vary between fractions of one percent to about 2%. Of course, higher percentage emulsions can also be used.
Depending on the ratio of solvent and water and the emulsifier used, emulsions of the oil-in-water type or else those of the water-in-oil type can be produced.
For the production of ovicidal and insecticidal agents based on diphenyl, pentachlorophenol and diethyl p-nitrophenyl thiophosphate, which are to be used in the form of solutions in organic solvents (agricultural spray), those carrier solvents are suitable that are not are highly flammable, as odorless as possible and, if handled properly, are as non-toxic as possible for humans, animals and plants.
In addition, they must be indifferent to pentahalophenol, diphenyl and dieth@-1-p-nit.rophent-1-thiophosphate and not corrosive to the materials in the storage containers.
Suitable solvents are: on the one hand, high-boiling oils of vegetable, ani malic or mineral origin, as already mentioned above, in particular the easily available petroleum distillates of the kerosene type, but then also lower-boiling synthetic solvents with a flash point of at least 30, e.g.
B. carbon tetrachloride, ethylene trichloride, tetrachloroethane, hydrogenated and alkylated naphthalenes and the like. Solvent mixtures can of course also be used.
The addition of solubilizers (mutual solvents), which facilitate the penetration of the active substance through the shells, as well as agents that support the ovicidal and insecticidal action, can also increase the efficiency of the solutions, so that highly effective products are obtained .
The new combination can also be used as a dusting agent. Suitable carriers for the production of dusts are z. B. talc, bentonite, kieselur, lime, also wood flour, cork flour and other powdery materials minerali shear or vegetable origin.
By adding wetting and dispersing agents, such powdered preparations can be made easily wettable (wettable powder), so that suspensions which can be suspended in water and which can be used as sprays are obtained.
By mixing with other known active ingredients, such as fungicides, bactericides, insecticides or ovicides, interesting combinations are obtained. So can the with tel other insecticidal substances such. B. Hexaclilorcy clohexane, where the few resting stages that may not be recorded during treatment are killed by the added insecticides (spraying shortly before the start of vegetation).
Other insecticides with which the agents can be combined include: arsenates, fluosilicates, phenothiazines, thiocyanates, nieotin, Rotenone, Pyrethrum, etc .; also bactericides, such as. B. higher molecular ammonium or mercury compounds and fungicides such as sulfur, poly sulfide, lime sulfide, copper compounds such as copper sulfate, copper oxychloride, Bor deauxbrühe, etc. Such combinations particularly suitable for special purposes often give better results than you expect from the effects of the individual components let.
The agents can be used by the methods customary per se in spraying, spraying, dipping or smoking processes or by other suitable measures. The emulsions are particularly suitable as winter spraying agents. Further comes. a use of the means for exterminating pests and pest eggs in waste dumping and storage locations, which are particularly frequent breeding places for vermin.
Control of such insects and other pests, for example snails, which use standing water and ponds to lay eggs and develop, is given by the new agents based on pentaehlorplienol, diphenyl and diethyl p-nitrophenyl thiophosphate. In short, the use of the means for pest control is always indicated where the eggs and other resting stages of the pests to be controlled can be reached.
The test of the effect against pest eggs (Ovicide test) was carried out as follows: Clutches of Drospphila eggs (up to 2 hours old) were immersed in the emulsion or solution to be tested. The dive time was generally 120 seconds. After dipping, the treated eggs were for about. Stored in the breeding room for 2 days and then counted the hatching larvae. An average of 1000 eggs were used per experiment. The tests were carried out analogously with the other insect eggs.
The test for larvicidal and insecticidal action (larvicide test) was carried out as follows: Scale insects of the species Aspidiotus hede rae on oleander leaves were immersed in the ready-to-use aqueous diluent of the emulsion for 10 seconds, stored at 20 and after 4 and 8 days the over living larvae and adults counted.
An average of 500 animals were treated per experiment; Similarly, other larvae of other pests (flour moths, etc.) were also tested.
The hibernating form of the spider mite (Tetranychiis urticae) was used as a laboratory test for the acaricidal effect (acaricide test). The animals were dabbed with a fine brush with the aqueous dilution of the emulsions and the dead mites were counted after 48 hours.
The acaricidal effect is important in winter treatment, especially for combating the dormant stages of gall mites, Eriophyes piri and Eriophy es vitis.
