Les qualités que l'on attend d'un joint d'étan chéité pour cuvettes de pédaliers, se résument comme suit - Efficacité maximum, c'est-à-dire fermeture garan tie de la sortie de l'axe, même si ce dernier se trouve faussé par suite d'un choc ; - résistance maximum contre tous les facteurs qui contribuent à la détérioration du joint, donc lon gévité maximum; - minimum de pièces, si possible une seule ; - fabrication en série à bon marché ; - usinage réduit et simple de la pièce porte-joint ; - possibilité de remplacement facile et rapide, sans démontage des organes de roulement ;
Sealing of a mechanism on ball bearings, in particular of a bicycle bottom bracket In all mechanisms which include a rotating axis on ball bearings , housed in the bore of a closed carrier element, of suitable shape, axis whose ends protrude from the bearings to exit outwards, the problem of the sealing of the internal device, or in other words , protection of running gear, arises whenever such a mechanism is exposed to an external atmosphere infected with dust, sand or other foreign bodies with an abrasive effect, as well as to humidity. midity.
Conditions of this kind are found in particular in the case of bicycle cranksets, especially since, very often, the maintenance and cleaning of these means of locomotion are greatly neglected, to the point of sometimes being non-existent. It is therefore important to provide this important and vulnerable part of the bicycle with effective and resistant protection against any entry into the interior of harmful materials.
Various attempts have already been made to achieve the desired goal, from the conventional felt seal, to the most complicated baffle system, including all kinds of rigid or elastic sealing rings. These means have the drawback either of not guaranteeing absolute closure, or of wearing out relatively too quickly, or of requiring costly machining of the seal-carrier parts, or finally of being impractical to replace because they entail partial or complete disassembly of the components to be protected.
To overcome this last drawback, which must be taken into account, especially in popular vehicles, elastic joints have already been proposed with clamping on the axle and therefore rotating with it and applying to the outside of the stationary bowl. bearing, in an appropriate chamber of the latter. However, this seal, being independent of the part against which it rests elastically, can be lost in the event of disassembly, and can also be delivered only separately with the counterpart.
The qualities that one expects from a seal for bottom bracket cups can be summed up as follows - Maximum efficiency, that is to say guaranteed closure of the output of the axle, even if the latter is distorted by shock; - maximum resistance against all the factors which contribute to the deterioration of the seal, therefore maximum longevity; - minimum number of rooms, if possible only one; - inexpensive mass production; - reduced and simple machining of the seal carrier part; - possibility of easy and quick replacement, without dismantling the running gear;
- combination of the gasket and the bowl so that the first forms one unit with the second, so as not to get lost in the event of disassembly, the two can thus be delivered together.
The seal that is the subject of the present invention was designed to meet all the conditions listed above as much as possible, and thus represents real progress over the seals known to date.
It consists of a single piece, of elastic consistency, and shaped in the mold so that the part surrounding the rotary axis has two flexible bearing lips which apply automatically and intimately to. the periphery of the axis, and that a flange encircling this central part forms an annular flange for fixing without risk of loss, but with the possibility of rapid replacement, of the part in a circular groove inside of a seal carrier. To ensure, without excessive stress, good adhesion of the seal in the groove,
the two lateral faces of the flange can be provided with a number of concentric grooves with a sawtooth profile, which at the same time facilitate the fitting of the gasket, these teeth automatically adapting to the manufacturing tolerances of the throat. Finally, as a result of the embedding of the seal in the groove, the first can hardly come out by itself, even if the pin is removed, and the two parts can, in the event of replacement, be delivered together.
The drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of a mechanism on ball bearings provided with a seal according to the invention.
In the drawing, 1 designates the usual axis of the pedal of a bicycle, with a conical bearing con cave forming it the internal raceway of the balls 2 .. The external raceway 3a is located in the cup 3 of the crankset which is shown here the adjustable cup, that is to say that which is provided with a thread 3b screwing into the threaded opening 4a of the 'bottom bracket 4. This screwing is done by the head six -pan 3c. The cup is secured in its correct position by the lock nut 5. The interior of the cup 3 has a cylindrical part 3d, the diameter of which corresponds to the outer diameter of the ring of balls 2.
The raceway 3n is delimited by the interior radius r to which is attached the exterior radius R which makes the transition to the constricted part of the cup with the interior diameter d. It is in this part that a circular groove 3e is formed in which the flange 6a of the elastic seal 6 engages. The two lateral faces of this flange are not smooth, but bear several concentric grooves which leave between them as many ribs with sawtooth section 6b.
The central part of the seal is formed by a tubular end 6c which ends at both ends with an annular lip 6d, the inside diameter of which is slightly smaller than that of the bearing surface lb of the axis 1.
The seal 6 is made of a flexible material which is resistant to wear and to attack by abrasive particles contained in the ambient atmosphere or by lubricants. It can for example consist of polyvinyl chloride. To obtain parts of large series, regular and inexpensive, they are preferably manufactured by hot molding.
The seal can be fitted quickly and easily by hand, without the use of any tools. Due to its flexibility, the seal can easily be deformed so that the flange 6a can be passed through the hole of diameter d, and then threaded into the groove 3e. The width of the flange, measured over the tips of the teeth 6b, being slightly larger than that of the groove 3e, the gasket will normally always hold well therein, even if it is carried out to the maximum tolerances. On the other hand, the two lips 6d always apply automatically and closely to the outside diameter of the bearing surface lb, without the latter having to be carried out to close tolerances.
Due to the fact that the adhesion surfaces of the flange 6a in the groove 3e are larger than those of the lips 6d on the bearing surface lb, the seal 6 will normally be integral with the cup 3, and therefore stationary. However, if by chance it was driven by the rotation of the axis and thus turns freely in the groove, there would be no inconvenience, the tightness remaining ensured by the teeth 6b.
As for the internal shape of the bowl 3, it was essentially dictated by the manufacturing process. As these cuvettes are cold forged, it is important to facilitate the flow of the material therein, which has been achieved by the large radius R.
In addition to the adjustable cup 3 as shown in the drawing, the bottom bracket of a bicycle comprises, on the opposite side, also a fixed cup, not shown. The arrangement of the seal is completely identical.
Although the foregoing description relates to a bicycle crankset, the invention can also be applied to other similar devices or mechanisms, the sealing of which must be ensured.
