Process for the production of dyes
By working. n von Liebermann (Liebigs Annalen 518, pages 245-259) has become known that 2, 5-diarylaminoterephthalic acids according to linear quinacridones. can condense according to the following reaction equation:
EMI1.1
wherein the nuclei A can also contain substituents. Zinc chloride, phosphorus pentachloride, aluminum chloride, hydrobromic acid and others are named as condensation agents with which acridone ring closure can be achieved, albeit with unsatisfactory yield. The purification of the ring closure products obtained with these condensation agents is difficult and lengthy.
The fusing of 2,5-diarylaminoterephthalic acids with boric acid takes place with better yield at temperatures between 260-3300 and also leads to purer products compared to the other condensing agents.
Pure quinacridones of the above formula are finely divided for coloring paints and plastic compositions, since they dye them in brilliant yellowish to bluish red shades and, in addition to excellent lightfastness, also have high solvent and bleeding fastness and good thermal stability.
The quinacridones prepared by Liebermann's process in the boric acid melt do not meet the requirements made of such a pigment dye. As a result of the high melting temperatures, the pigment is produced in a very cloudy shade and has such a grain hardness that it can only be finely divided with great difficulty using conventional methods. A subsequent cleaning of the crude pigment to achieve the desired clear color is extremely tedious and lossy.
For a technical preparation of such quinacridones, a boric acid melt in the form specified by Liebermann is hardly an option, since it is extremely difficult to heat a large amount of starting material to temperatures of 260 to 270 within a few minutes and then the hard one after solidification To remove melt from the condensation vessels and to work up. The products obtained by Liebermann either by melting with boric acid or by condensation with one of the other condensation agents specified are therefore unsuitable for industrial use as paint dyes or dyes for coloring plastics.
It has now been found that the ring closure to the linear quinacridones can be carried out at considerably lower temperatures, namely between 80 and 180, if polyphosphoric acid is used as the condensing agent. The procedure is such that 2,5-diarylaminoterephthalic acids are stirred in excess polyphosphoric acid, heated for some time to the temperature at which the acridon ring closure takes place, which in part depends on the choice of substituents in the arylamino radicals, and the reaction mixture then poured on water.
The quinacridone which has precipitated is filtered off with suction, boiled with dilute alkali to remove any starting material still present, then suctioned off again and washed with hot alcohol.
The reaction can also be carried out in the presence of an inert solvent or diluent, such as, for. B. chlorobenzene, dichlorobenzene or nitrobenzene perform.
Instead of the free diarylaminoterephthalic acids, their esters can also be closed in the same way to form a ring. The 2,5-diarylamino-terephthalic acid esters are easily accessible according to the information from Liebormann (Liebigs Annalen 404, pages 272-321) by reacting succinylsuccinic acid ester with aromatic amines with simultaneous or subsequent oxidation. The free acids are obtained therefrom by alkaline saponification.
The quinacridones obtained in good yield by the process according to the invention can be used as pigment dyes without further purification. They have a lower grain hardness than the products obtainable by the Liebermann process and can be easily dispersed using the usual methods.
The bright yellow-tinged to bluish-tinged red pigments obtained have the outstanding fastness properties indicated above and are very suitable for coloring paints and plastic compositions.
example 1
40 parts by weight of 2, 5-dianilino-terephthalic acid are introduced into 800 parts by weight of polyphosphoric acid and then stirred for one hour at 110-120. The still warm melt is poured into 5000 parts by volume of water and the red product which has precipitated is filtered off with suction. The filter residue is boiled with 2000 parts by volume of 10% sodium hydroxide solution, filtered off with suction again, washed neutral with water, then washed with hot alcohol and dried. 30 parts by weight of a bright blue-tinged red powder are obtained which, after appropriate fine distribution, is eminently suitable for coloring paints and plastics, such as polyvinyl chloride, polyolefins or polystyrene.
Example 2
20 parts by weight of 2,5-DianiIino-terephthalic acid diethyl ester are introduced into 300 parts by weight of polyphosphoric acid and heated to 125-130 for 2 hours. The melt is poured into 2000 parts by volume of water with stirring, filtered off with suction and washed until neutral. The deeply colored filter residue is boiled with 500 parts by volume of oily sodium hydroxide solution, filtered off and washed with water and hot alcohol. The product dissolves with a deep blue color in 10% alcoholic potassium hydroxide solution and can be precipitated from this solution with water in the form of deep red flakes.
Example 3
100 parts by weight of 2,5-dianilino-terephthalic acid are introduced in portions into 500 parts by weight of polyphosphoric acid with stirring at 80-90.
The polyphosphoric acid used can be obtained in various ways, for example by stirring phosphorus pentoxide into aqueous phosphoric acid or by concentrating an aqueous one. Phosphoric acid in vacuo to the desired final concentration. The mixture slowly increases to 125-130! heated and kept at this temperature for 1 hour. After cooling to 100, the deep blue melt is poured into a mixture of 1000 parts by weight of ice and 500 parts by weight of water, stirred for 1.2 hours and left to stand for 12-15 hours to complete the hydrolysis. The precipitated quinacridone is filtered off and washed neutral.
To remove the acidic components, the presscake is refluxed for 10 minutes with a 1% sodium hydroxide solution, filtered off and washed neutral. After fine division, 91 parts by weight of a red powder are obtained which dyes paints and plastic compositions in bluish red shades with very good fastness properties.
Example 4
50 parts by weight of 2, 5-dianilino-terephthalic acid in 250 parts by weight of polyphosphoric acid
Heated to 130 for 1 hour while stirring. The melt is hydrolyzed by slowly adding dropwise water at 100-125, the precipitated quinacridone is filtered off and washed neutral. After exhaustion with hot l'Voiger potassium hydroxide solution, 44.5 parts by weight = 99.3% of the red product are obtained, which after appropriate fine division can be used as a bright blue-tinged red pigment.
Example 5
50 parts by weight of 2,5-dianilino-terephthalic acid are introduced into 750 parts by weight of polyphosphoric acid with stirring, heated to 130 and
Maintained at this temperature for 1 hour. The on
The cooled melt is poured into 2500 parts by weight of water, the quinacridone which has precipitated is filtered off, washed until neutral and freed from unreacted acid by boiling with 1% sodium hydroxide solution. 42.5 parts by weight = 95% of the theory of a red quinacridone, which according to the corresponding Appropriate fine division of paints and plastic materials in blue, pungent red shades with very good fastness properties.
Example 6
50 parts by weight of 2,5-dianilino-terephthalic acid are stirred into 500 parts by weight of polyphosphoric acid and heated to 150 °. After stirring for 1 hour at this temperature, the melt is added to five times the amount of water, filtered and the reaction product is washed neutral. After boiling with 5% sodium hydroxide solution, neutral washing and drying, a red product is obtained in 98% yield, which can be used for coloring paints and plastics after grinding in a ball mill.
The table below also contains a number of further quin acridones obtainable according to the invention and their color shades, which are also distinguished by good fastness properties.
