C'est ainsi qu'avec un bain d'électrolyse de composition initiale de l'ordre de 50 parties de KCl pour 50 parties de KF, on obtiendrait rapidement un bain d'électrolyse constitué en moyenne partie de KCl. En outre, ce procédé ne permet pas d'obtenir du tantale avec un haut degré de rendement ;
Il a été toutefois mis au point qu'il est préférable, en principe, de n'introduire à la fois, au cours de l'électrolyse, que de faibles quantités de Ta205, dans le bain électrolytique en fusion, afin d'éviter la formation de dépôts de Ta205, non dissous, au fond de la cellule d'électrolyse ;
Selon un processus d'électrolyse, bien connu en soi, l'hémipentoxyde de tantale, dissous dans le bain électrolytique, est ainsi dissocié par électrolyse en cations tantale qui viennent se décharger à la cathode, en donnant du métal pur, et en ions oxygène qui vont à l'anode ; ladite anode, qui est en carbone pur, est alors brûlée avec formation, en majeure partie, de CO2. Au cours de l'électrolyse la composition même du bain d'électrolyse ne se trouve pas modifiée .et seule, sa concentration en hémipentoxyde de tantale varie; de façon continue, entre deux valeurs ;
II a été, de plus, défini qu'il est préférable, de réaliser ladite électrolyse sous une densité anodique de courant de l'ordre de 60 à 120 ampères par dm2 et d'éviter de dépasser des densités anodiques de cou rant de 120 à 130 amp./dm2. De même on utilise, de préférence;

Process for the electrolytic manufacture of tantalum It is known, on the one hand, to manufacture tantalum by electrolysis of tantalum hemipentoxide (T% 05) dissolved in electrolysis baths, the average composition of which is as follows: Potassium fluoride (KF) .... .......... _ 40% Potassium chloride (KCL) ....... .... </ B > 40 Potassium fluorantalate (TaF7K2) ....:
........................................... 15 % Ta205 ................................. .... .......... - 5% The electrolysis takes place between 650o and 800o C, for example, in a cast iron vessel forming a cathode with a carbon anode, most often in graphite . Tan tal oxide is added periodically as it disappears.
When using very pure raw materials, one obtains, on the cathode, with a yield of the order of 65% to 75% of the theoretical yield calculated in accordance with Faraday's law, metallic tantalum containing less 0.045% iron and 0.02% silicon, but with an average carbon content between 0.10 and 0.20% @. The minimum carbon content of certain parts of the dendritic deposit does not fall below 0.06%.
It is known, on the other hand, to prepare tantalum by electrolysis of its pentachloride (TaCh) in an electrolysis bath composed of alkali salts. First, a chemical reaction occurs, such.
that, for example TaCh -I- 7 KF = K2TaF7 -I- 5 KCl Such a process has, first of all, the fundamental disadvantage of not being industrially feasible continuously, because the addition of TaCh to the electrolytic bath produces, ipso facto, a variation in the composition of said bath.
Thus, with an electrolysis bath of initial composition of the order of 50 parts of KCl to 50 parts of KF, an electrolysis bath would quickly be obtained consisting of an average part of KCl. In addition, this process does not make it possible to obtain tantalum with a high degree of yield;
in fact, given the low boiling point of TaCh (2410 C), relative to the melting temperature of the electrolysis bath. (greater than 6500 C), high losses in TaCh must necessarily occur by volatilization. Thus, the yields hardly reach and never exceed, according to such a process, 70 to 75% by weight.
Finally, as in the case of the processes for electrolysis of tantalum hemipentoxide described above, tantalum is obtained, the average carbon content of which is never less than 0.10% and the Brinell hardness is always greater. at 90 or even 100: However, these carbon contents and Brinell hardnesses are too high to allow this tantalum to be used for the manufacture of capacitors and semi-finished products (sheets, wires, etc.); because carbon makes tantalum brittle and prevents annealing at temperatures below 14,000 C.
The present invention makes it possible to avoid the major drawbacks inherent in the processes entering into the state of the art. According to this process, pure tantalum is obtained industrially and continuously, containing less than 0.05% by weight of carbon and having a Brinell hardness of less than 70.
Said invention consists of a process for the continuous manufacture of pure tantalum by electrolysis of tantalum hemipentoxide, characterized in that the electrolysis bath consists of a mixture of sodium halides and molten sodium fluotantalate. .
It was first of all established the absolute necessity, in order to obtain, by electrolysis, pure tantalum containing less than 0.05% by weight of carbon and having a Brinell hardness of less than 70, to avoid any presence. , in the electrolysis bath of alkaline ion other than sodium and, in particular; to pros write the use of potassium compounds.
Thus, according to the invention, sodium halides and, inter alia: mixtures of sodium chloride and fluoride are used as electrolytic bath. According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the composition of said mixture approximately corresponds to that of the eutectic CINa-FNa.
To such a mixture is added pure sodium fluotantalate, in an amount of a few percent and, preferably, between 5 and 15%; according to a preferred embodiment, approximately 10% by weight of TaF7N% is added.
In the molten electrolysis bath thus produced, it is then possible to dissolve the tantalum hemipentoxide, as pure as possible, obtained previously according to any known process.
It has however been developed that it is preferable, in principle, to introduce at the same time, during the electrolysis, only small quantities of Ta205, into the electrolytic bath in fusion, in order to avoid the formation of deposits of undissolved Ta205 at the bottom of the electrolysis cell;
the said deposits are in fact only very difficult to eliminate. According to a preferred embodiment, the addition of T% 05, to the electrolysis bath, will only be carried out on the appearance of each anodic polarization effect, and not preventively. The quantity of Ta205 then introduced into the electrolysis bath will correspond to a few. percent by weight of said bath, and will be, inter alia, of the order of about 5%.
According to an electrolysis process, well known per se, tantalum hemipentoxide, dissolved in the electrolytic bath, is thus dissociated by electrolysis into tantalum cations which are discharged at the cathode, giving pure metal, and oxygen ions. that go to the anode; said anode, which is pure carbon, is then burnt with the formation, for the most part, of CO 2. During electrolysis, the actual composition of the electrolysis bath is not modified. And on its own, its tantalum hemipentoxide concentration varies; continuously, between two values;
one being able to rise, up to approximately that of saturation in Ta205, and the other corresponding to that from which the anodic polarization effect occurs, well known to those skilled in the art.
The electrolysis process can be carried out in any electrolysis cell, known per se; Thus, among other things, steel or cast iron cells are used, also playing the role of cathode. Where the anodes are graphite electrodes, well known to those skilled in the art.
It has also been defined that it is preferable to carry out said electrolysis under an anode current density of the order of 60 to 120 amps per dm2 and to avoid exceeding current anode densities of 120 to 130 amp./dm2. Likewise, preferably;
mean cathode densities of between 20 and 40 amp: / dm2 and, more particularly, of the order of 30 to 35 amp./dm2. In this way, deposits of pure tantalum are obtained, in the form of dendrites formed by crystals of medium and regular size (approximately 50 to 100 mesh), easily recoverable.
The purpose of the following example is to illustrate the process, which is the subject of the present invention.
It is placed in an electrolysis cell, consisting of a steel cylinder approximately 200 mm in diameter and approximately 350 mm in height, connected to the negative pole of a continuous source of electrical energy and heated by means of an oven. with -electrical resistance in which it is immersed, and equipped with a cylindrical graphite anode approximately 110 mm in diameter and approximately 250 mm in height, supported by an internally cooled stainless steel tube, an electrolysis bath comprising Eutectic (NaCI-NaF) .. ... ... ........
......... 85% by weight Sodium fluotantalate (TaF, Na2) ... 10% by weight Tantalum hemipentoxide (Ta20 ;;) ......... 5% by weight After melting said bath, by heating between 650 and -8000 C, said anode is immersed a few hundred meters in the molten bath and begins electrolysis.
Such an electrolysis cell is made to operate at a total intensity of 500 amps; however, when starting with a new cell, we run for a few hours at low intensity and of the order of 100 to 150 amps, in order to form a layer of tantalum adhering very strongly to the cathode and then avoiding any risk of contamination of the cell. tantalum by the iron of said cell.
As explained above, approximately one kilogram of tan hemipentoxide, the mean level of impurities of which is as follows, is charged into the electrolysis bath, at each anodic polarization effect (spectral analysis)
