Abstract
Description
The invention relates to high-temperature electroplating, namely: to the electrolytic deposition of niobium, and can be used for coating substrates of a conductive material.
The known method of applying niobium coatings from chloride-fluoride molten electrolyte, which contains 5-20 wt. % potassium heptafluoroniobate, 7.9-11.0 wt. % sodium fluoride, 9.9-11.1 wt. % sodium chloride, 10.4-11.9 wt. % potassium chloride and 51.7–61.0 wt. % cesium chloride [1]. Low-porous niobium coatings on steel or copper substrates are obtained by electrolysis of this melt at a temperature of 680–800 ° C and current densities of 0.1–0.2 A / cm 2. The process is carried out using a soluble niobium anode with a high coating rate.
The disadvantage of the above method is the high requirements for the cleanliness of the working atmosphere. Potassium heptafluoroniobate, which is used in the composition of the electrolyte, is extremely hygroscopic, and its production without oxygen anionic impurities, which significantly reduce the quality of the coating, is extremely difficult. In addition, chloride-fluoride melts are corrosive media, and electrolysis in them leads to a decrease in the service life of materials and equipment.
For the deposition of niobium coatings, the authors of the invention [2] propose to use an electrolyte of the composition: 65–96 wt. % equimolar mixture of sodium chloride-potassium chloride and 2–30 wt. % potassium heptafluoroniobate with the addition of 2–5 wt. % of complex fluorine-containing salts of aluminum, tantalum, zirconium and titanium or a mixture of these salts. The process is carried out at a temperature of 700 ° C and a current density of 0.07 A / cm 2 . The electrolyte, which does not contain sodium fluoride, has a lower content of oxygen impurities and makes it possible to improve the quality of the resulting niobium coatings. Carrying out electrolysis under these conditions increases the ductility of the coatings and reduces their porosity, but at the same time significantly reduces the deposition rate with the increased aggressiveness of the chloride melt.
Closest to the claimed method is the electrochemical deposition of niobium from a bromide melt consisting of a eutectic mixture of sodium bromide and potassium bromide containing niobium bromide with a niobium content of 4-6 wt. % in terms of metal. Electrolysis is carried out at a temperature of 700 ° C, anodic and cathodic current densities of 0.01–0.02 and ≤ 0.2 A / cm 2, respectively [3]. As a result, dense, continuous and well-adhered niobium coatings with a smooth surface are obtained. The authors of this method note that at low current densities, a conductive film is formed on the surface of the melt, which leads to a short circuit on the cell and a decrease in the current efficiency of the cathode product.
The objective of the invention is to develop an electrochemical method for producing high quality niobium coatings with a high current efficiency.
For this, a method is proposed for the electrochemical deposition of niobium coatings from bromide melts, including electrolysis of the melt at an anode current density of 0.02 A / cm 2 , a cathode current density of 0.05-0.1 A / cm 2 in an argon atmosphere, while electrolysis is carried out in the temperature range from 700 to 750 ° C in a molten electrolyte containing potassium bromide, cesium bromide and niobium bromide containing niobium from 2 to 5 wt. % in terms of metal.
99%.Unlike the prototype, the inventive method uses a molten electrolyte containing potassium bromide, cesium bromide and niobium bromide. Since the deposition of niobium from melts of cesium bromide proceeds with a higher cathodic polarization than from the melt of the prototype, the difference between the equilibrium and oxidized forms of niobium ions in melts with cesium bromide is less than in the melt of the prototype. This brings the equilibrium state of the oxidized and equilibrium forms of the ions of the deposited metal in the melt closer, which in turn makes it possible to obtain continuous, smooth, fine-crystalline coatings. In addition, melts with cesium bromide are thermally more stable, which allows electrolysis at high temperatures without the formation of salt fumes. In this case, the electrolysis process is characterized by a high current yield of the cathode product up to 99%.
The technical result of the claimed invention consists in the possibility of obtaining high-quality, continuous niobium coatings with a high current efficiency.
The invention is illustrated in the drawings, where figure 1 shows the microstructure of the deposited niobium coating; in fig. 2 is an external view of the deposited niobium coating.
The method was carried out as follows. The deposition of niobium coatings is carried out in an electrochemical cell with a quartz retort or a closed-type electrolyzer, in which a crucible made of an electrically conductive and chemically inert material (for example, graphite or carbon-carbon composite material) filled with an anode material is placed. The anode material is niobium metal rings with a pre-cleaned surface. In general, the structure is an anode device. An electrolyte of the composition KBr-CsBr-NbBr 3 is loaded into a crucible, in this example made of graphite. The assembled cell / electrolyzer is heated to 500 ° C with constant evacuation, then filled with pure argon and heated to the required temperature of 700–750 ° C, followed by holding for 4 hours to uniformly melt the electrolyte.
To purify the electrolyte from oxygen-containing impurities, preliminary electrolysis is carried out until a smooth light gray precipitate is obtained. After cleaning, a substrate preheated over the melt (20–30 minutes) is immersed into the electrolyte, made of a conductive material (molybdenum, tungsten, copper, carbon, graphite, etc.), in this experiment from graphite, which is a cathode. Niobium coatings are deposited in a galvanostatic mode at temperatures of 700–750 ° C, at a constant anode current density of 0.02 A / cm 2 and an interval of cathode current densities of 0.05–0.1 A / cm 2 . With an increase in the cathodic current density and process temperature, the continuity and quality of the coating deteriorate sharply.
