Process for the production of shaped structures from plastics with a uniform morphological structure
Shaped structures made of crystallizing plastics such as polyamides, polyethylenes and polytrifluorochloroethylenes, namely thicker pieces, usually show internal stresses which can be greatly reduced by tempering, but can hardly be completely eliminated. These tensions are due to a non-uniform morphological structure [s. Kunststoffe 45 (1955) 414] of the shaped structures.
It has now been found that molded structures made of plastics with a uniform morphological structure can be obtained by molding melts of crystallizing plastics with a content of finely divided crystal nucleating solids with cooling.
The addition of the crystal nucleating substances also causes the melts to solidify more quickly on cooling, so that, for. B. in the production of injection molded parts, the output from the molds per unit of time can be increased significantly. The ability of the added substances to nucleate for the particular plastic in question can easily be determined by a simple experiment by z. B. a mixed with the to be examined, finely divided solid melt brought to solidification by cooling and the number of crystals formed per unit area compared to a product produced without the addition of nucleating substances z. B. is determined microscopically. The greater the number of crystals and thus the smaller their diameter, the greater the nucleation capacity of the solid being investigated.
The ability of a particular solid to nucleate increases with its degree of distribution and is generally specific to the individual plastics.
A wide variety of solids can be used as suitable nucleating agents, e.g. B. finely divided metals such as fine aluminum powder, lead powder and electrolytic copper, inorganic substances or compounds such as graphite, magnesium oxide, zinc oxide, aluminum oxide, barium sulfate, chalk, sodium carbonate, molybdenum disulfide, cobalt sulfide, iron (II) sulfide, tungsten (IV) - sulfide, scheelite, alkali halides such as sodium chloride, in particular sparingly soluble halides such as lithium fluoride, also highly disperse silica and talc, organic compounds such as anthracene, chrysene and coronene, and high molecular weight substances such as polytetrafluoroethane. With polyamides, especially polycaprolactam, z.
B. finest grain sizes of about 1-2 4 through small additions, in particular of graphite, molybdenum disulfide, lithium fluoride and talc.
The amounts of such solids to be incorporated into the plastics depend on the nature of both these solids and the plastics in question. In general, the desired success is already achieved with additions of 0.0001 to 0.1n / o and in particular up to 0.01e / 9.
The incorporation of the nucleating solids into the melt can take place in such a way that these solids are already added to the starting materials for the production of plastics. The solids can also be the finished plastics such. B. their granules or powders are added before the melting or the melt itself.
example 1
A melt of polyamide containing the solids mentioned can be obtained as follows:
In a melt of 100 parts by weight of caprolactam, 0.01 part by weight of graphite is finely distributed. The mixture is subjected to polycondensation in the usual way. The resulting polyamide melt is then processed into moldings on the injection molding machine while cooling. If one produces microtome sections of the molded parts obtained in this way and looks at them under the microscope, one sees the image of a uniform morphological structure with a very uniform grain size of about 5, u.
Example 2
100 parts by weight of a polyamide granulate are intimately mixed with 0.001 parts by weight of molybdenum disulfide. From this mixture, profile parts made of polyamide with a uniform morphological structure are produced on the screw press in the known continuous working process with cooling, which are largely stress-free and, when viewed under the microscope, have a homogeneous grain size with a very uniform crystal size of about 4 u .
Example 3
100 parts by weight of a polyamide granulate are mixed with 0.0001 part by weight of lithium fluoride and the mixture is injected onto the injection molding machine while cooling down thin-walled molded parts. Bodies are obtained which have a remarkable transparency and, when viewed under the microscope, a uniform morphological structure with a very homogeneous particle size of about 1-2p.
Example 4
If the molybdenum disulphide is replaced in Example 2 by the same amount of highly dispersed silica, largely stress-free products with a uniform morphological structure with a crystal size of about 8-10 pieces are obtained.
Example 5
If the molybdenum disulfide is replaced by 0.01 parts by weight of talc in Example 2, a plastic with a uniform morphological structure with a crystal size of about 1-2, u.
Without the additives described in Examples 1-5, the solidified polyamide consists of a mixture of crystals of extremely different sizes. Such pieces have considerable internal stresses which can lead to warping or even cracking.
