Use of polyamides as leveling agents for vat dyeing
It has been found that polyamides, as they are obtained by condensation in a molecular ratio of 1: 1 of a) a heterocyclic radical and at least one alkylene radical containing polyamines which contain at least one tertiary or quaternary nitrogen atom and at least two nitrogen atoms bonded to hydrogen, and b) dicarboxylic acids Formula (1) HOOC- (CH2) k-COOll, in which k is an integer from 3 to 8, can be formed, can advantageously be used as leveling agents for dyeing vats.
The polyamides can be prepared in the customary manner by polycondensation of the polyamines mentioned under a) with the dicarboxylic acids mentioned under b).
An example of a polyamine is N-amino ethylpiperazine of the formula
EMI1.1
to mention. Examples of dicarboxylic acids are glutaric acid, suberic acid, azelaic acid, sebacic acid and, above all, adipic acid.
The polyamides can be prepared in a manner known per se, expediently by heating the two reaction components in the prescribed molecular ratio of 1: 1, if appropriate in the presence of inert solvents and / or dehydrating agents such as toluenesulfonic acid. It is advantageous to work in such a way that only a low degree of condensation is achieved. For example, when 1 mole of a dicarboxylic acid is reacted with 1 mole of polyamine, the amount of water of reaction should be at least 20 and preferably about 25 cm 3.
This corresponds to an average degree of condensation of 2, i.e. H. a linkage of 2 dicarboxylic acid molecules and 2 polyamine molecules.
If the condensation is continued until about 29 cm "of water has been split off, which corresponds to an average linkage of 3 dicarboxylic acid molecules with 3 polyamine molecules, the leveling effect is generally not better, but remains approximately the same.
According to the invention, the polyamides of the composition specified at the outset are used as leveling agents for dyeing vats. They are particularly suitable for cellulose fibers and, moreover, can be used wherever, due to the dye and / or the material to be dyed, uneven dyeing is to be feared or is already present. For example, the polyamides can be added to the dye baths so that they have a leveling effect during the dyeing process.
Uneven vat dyeings can also be leveled out subsequently with the aid of the polyamides in an alkaline bath containing hydrosulfite.
The amount of polyamide that is added to the treatment baths can vary within fairly wide limits; it is expediently about 0.25 to 5 parts of polyamide in 1000 parts by volume of water.
In the examples below, the parts are parts by weight, the percentages are percentages by weight, and the temperatures are given in degrees Celsius.
example 1
A dye bath is prepared from 1000 parts of water, 16 parts of 30O / Diger sodium hydroxide solution, 2 parts of sodium hydrosulfite, 0.1 part of dye of the formula
EMI2.1
and 1 part of a 50% solution of the polyamide, the preparation of which is described below. In this bath, 100 parts of cotton yarn are dyed on cheeses for one hour at 50 to 609. The dyeings are then oxidized and finished in the usual way. The yarn on the bobbins is well dyed in a violet shade, in contrast to a dyeing otherwise obtained in the same way, but without the addition of the polyamide.
The polyamide is made as follows:
A reaction mixture of 146 parts of adipic acid (1 mol), 126 parts of N-aminoethylpiperazine of the formula (2) (1 mol), 1.5 parts of p-toluenesulfonic acid and 500 parts of xylene is allowed to boil for 15 hours while passing nitrogen through, the resulting Water is continuously removed with the help of a suitable separator. After this time there will be around 25 parts of water in the separator.
The xylene is now distilled off in vacuo. A very viscous mass remains, which is dissolved in the same amount of water, so that a 50% solution of the polyamide is obtained.
Instead of this polyamide, when dyeing according to the instructions given in the first paragraph of this example, a polyamide can also be used, which is obtained if the reaction components mentioned are kept in the descending cooler for about 7 hours at 160 to 1650 without a solvent, until the with ice 29 parts of water have accumulated in a cooled template, and then the reaction product dissolves in the same amount of water.
A good leveling effect is also achieved with the following dyes instead of the dye of the formula (3):

Example 2
The procedure of Example 1 is followed, but one of the polyamides described below under A. and B. is used.
A leveling effect is also achieved.
A. 146 parts of adipic acid (1 mol), 126 parts of aminoethylpiperazine of the formula (2) (1 mol) and 1.5 parts of p-toluenesulfonic acid are kept at 160 to 165 for 3 to 4 hours in a reaction vessel with a descending condenser. After this time there are 26 parts of water in the ice-cooled receiver. Now it is first cooled down to 130 to 140 and after the addition of 20 parts of ethylene glycol to 1200.
At this temperature, 126 parts of dimethyl sulfate (1 mol) are allowed to flow in slowly and, after the addition, the mixture is stirred for a further 2 hours at 120 to 1300.
120 parts of water are then added. After cooling, about 504 parts of a clear, viscous solution are obtained which contain about 50% polyamide.
B. 132 parts of glutaric acid (1 mol), 126 parts of aminoethylpiperazine of the formula (2) (1 mol) and 1.5 parts of p-toluenesulfonic acid are kept at about 1600 for 4 hours in a reaction vessel with a descending condenser, while stirring. The mixture is then allowed to cool to 140, 20 parts of ethylene glycol are added and the mixture is cooled further to 1300. After adding 210 parts of water and cooling to room temperature, a clear, viscous solution is obtained (460 parts) which contains about 50% of polyamide.
Example 3
In a dyebath consisting of 800 parts of water, 13 parts by volume of 30 / n sodium hydroxide solution, 1.6 parts of sodium hydrosulfite, 0.3 parts of a concentrated aqueous paste of the dye, which is obtained by melting sulfur from methylbenzanthrone, and 0.8 parts of one of the Preparations C. or D. described below, 10 parts of cotton satin are dyed at 600 for one hour.
Then it is oxidized and finished in the usual way. A level blue coloration is obtained.
The mentioned preparations are made in the following way:
C. 174 parts of suberic acid (1 mol), 126 parts of N aminoethylpiperazine (1 mol) and 1.5 parts of p-toluenesulphonic acid are kept at 160 to 1650 for 4 to 5 hours in a reaction vessel with a descending condenser, while stirring. After cooling to 140, 10 parts of ethylene glycol and then at 1300 260 parts of water are added.
A clear viscous solution is obtained which contains about 50% / polyamide.
D. 188 parts of azelaic acid (1 mol) and 126 parts of N-aminoethylpiperazine (1 mol) are reacted in the presence of 1.5 parts of p-toluenesulfonic acid in the same manner as in the preparation of preparation C. There are then 26 parts of water in the template. At 140, 10 parts of ethylene glycol are added and then at 1300, 275 parts of water are added, whereupon a clear solution is obtained.
Example 5
The dyeing is carried out according to the procedure of Example 4, except that 0.05 part of the dye, which is obtained by alkali melting of benzanthrone and subsequent bromination, in the form of a finely disperse powder, or 0.05 part of the dye of the formula is used
EMI4.1
also in the form of a finely dispersed powder, and as a leveling agent 0.8 part of one of the preparations E. or F. described below.
The colorations obtained do not matter.
Preparations E. and F. are obtained in the following way:
E. 146 parts of adipic acid (1 mole), 126 parts of N-aminoethylpiperazine (1 mole) and 1.5 parts of p-toluenesulfonic acid are kept in a reaction vessel with a descending condenser for 3 to 4 hours at 160 to 165 until 26 Parts of water. It is then allowed to cool to 1300 and 247 parts of butyl glycol are added, in which the reaction mixture dissolves.
After cooling, 492 parts of a paste are obtained which contain 50% polyamide (preparation EJ). 49.2 parts (1 mol) of the preparation E1 obtained are heated to 100 "in a vessel with a stirrer and reflux condenser, whereupon 8.8 parts (1.1 mol) of glycolic chlorohydrin are added dropwise. The temperature is then kept at 110 to 11 for 6 hours 5o, whereupon a preparation is obtained which contains a large part of the quaternization product of the polyamide used.
F. 49.2 parts (1 mol) of the preparation E1 described in the preparation of preparation E. are quaternized with 10 parts (1.05 mol) of chloroacetic acid amide for 4 hours at 60 to 65O and then for 2 hours at 90 to 95.
