Sliding headstock lathe Up to now only very complex devices have enabled the machining, on sliding headstock lathes, of parts having conical or conical shapes, that is to say having a contour, for example curvilinear . In addition, to perform the dressing of a face during the movement of the doll, the lathe must be provided with a pair of crossed carriages whose control is always very complex.
The object of the present invention is to remedy these drawbacks and to allow still other machining operations which hitherto it was not possible to provide for sliding headstock lathes. The sliding headstock lathe according to the invention comprising a doll movable linearly in a horizontal direction is characterized by the fact that it also comprises a front carriage, movable hnealy in a direction perpendicular to the movement of the headstock and carrying a copying device actuating a tool and by the fact that the position of the tool carried by the copying device is slaved to the position of the tailstock of the lathe.
The attached drawing illustrates schematically and by way of example an embodiment of the sliding headstock lathe according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a partial plan view of the sliding headstock lathe.
Fig. 2 is a partial elevational view of the sliding headstock lathe.
Fig. 3 is a diagram of the mechanical connections for actuating the various mobile parts of the lathe.
In the embodiment illustrated in the drawing, the sliding headstock lathe comprises a frame 1 comprising a doll-holder support 2 and a table-holder support 3. A doll 4 is movable linearly in a horizontal plane along slides 5. carried by said doll carrier support. This headstock comprises a rotating part-holder spindle 6, the axis of which is parallel to the direction of movement of the tailstock 4.
This lathe also comprises a transverse tool-holder table 7 which can be moved in a vertical plane along slides 8 formed on the table-holder support. This table is through which gives greater possibilities of machining.
This tailstock 4 and this table 7 are both actuated in their respective movements by means of a device for controlling the tailstock lathe. This control device is of the type driven by this headstock and this table by means of rotating cams and is illustrated in FIG. 3.
The device for actuating the mobile headstock 4 and the table 7 in their respective linear displacements comprises a motor 9 driving in rotation, by means of a reference and a drive by endless screw 10 and tangent wheel 11, a camshaft 12. This engine 9 is rigidly fixed to the frame 1 and the camshaft 12 is also pivoted in bearings rigidly fixed to this frame 1. This camshaft 12 extends in a direction per pendicular both in the direction of the linear movements of the table and of the tailstock. One end of this camshaft 12 emerges out of the frame 1 of the lathe at a location below the table 7.
This end of the shaft 12 carries cams 13, 14 intended for actuating the doll 4 and the table 7 respectively.
The mechanical connection connecting the cam 13 controlling the linear displacements of the headstock 4 com carries a lever 15 pivoted on the frame 1 and housed in the table support support 3, one end of which carries a roller intended to make contact with the edge 16 of the cam 13 and the other end of which is articulated on one end of an arm 17, the other end of which is pivoted on a drive finger 18 rigidly fixed to the doll 4 and extending perpendicular to the plane of the slides 5 of this tailstock 4 towards the inside of the tailstock support 2.
The tailstock 4 is still subjected to a thrust tending to move the latter in the direction of the transverse table 7. This thrust is produced by a mass 19 of adjustable weight and guided in its vertical movements by a guide 20 integral with the frame 1 of the machine. This mass 19 is connected by a rod 21 to the end of a lever 22 integral with a means 23 pivoted on the frame of the lathe, on the doll carrier support in the example illustrated. A thrust member 24 is rigidly fixed to the hub 23 and extends radially relative to the latter.
The free end 25 of this thrust member 24 bears, under the effect of the weight of the mass 19, against a swivel 26 integral with the tailstock 4 and extending parallel to the driving finger 18 of this doll. In this way, as long as the forces due to the machining of a part carried by the spindle 6 do not exceed a value determined by the weight of the mass 19, the headstock tends to be moved in the direction of the transverse table 7 which causes the follower roller of the lever 15 to be held against the slice 16 of the cam 13.
The actuation of the mobile headstock in its movements is therefore of the sensitive type, that is to say that this headstock 4 performs movements corresponding to the profile of the cam 13 only insofar as the machining forces do not not exceed a specified value. As soon as these forces exceed this value, the movement of the headstock is stopped and the roller of lever 15 no longer follows the profile of cam 13.
This sensitive actuation of the tailstock makes it possible to ensure total operational safety of the lathe, however in certain cases it is necessary to provide for positive actuation of the tailstock, for example during the roughing of a part where the forces of machining can be high. To achieve positive actuation of the doll 4, it suffices to change the hub 23 carrying the lever 22 and the thrust member 24 so that this thrust member bears under the effect of the weight of the mass 19 of the other side of the journal 26. In this way the action of the mass 19 tends to move the doll 4 in a direction tending to move the latter away from the transverse table 7.
It is also necessary to move the lever 15 so that its follower roller comes to rest on the other side of the cam 13. Therefore the doll is actuated in its movements by the cam 13 against the action of the mass 19.
The mechanical connection connecting the cam 14 to the transverse table 7 is, by virtue of the vertical arrangement of this table 7, very simplified. This consists in fact only of a finger 27 rigidly fixed on the table 7 and bearing, under the effect of the own weight of this table, against the edge of the cam 14. The actuation of the table 7 in its displaces. rectilinear elements can be either sensitive when the workpiece is located between a tool fixed on this table 7 and the finger 27, or positive when the tool carried on the table 7 is located between the workpiece and the finger 27 resting on cam 14. This is possible thanks to the fact that the table 7 passes through.
The sliding headstock lathe described also comprises a device 42 for driving the spindle 6 in rotation of the conventional type and which will therefore not be described here.
In addition, this lathe also comprises an auxiliary shaft 29, disposed vertically inside the table support support 3 and pivoted on the frame 1, driven by the camshaft 12 by means of a pair of gears. conical 30, 31. This auxiliary shaft 29 drives a control drum 32 carrying cleats 33 for actuating automatic functions such as change of speed or direction of rotation of the spindle and auxiliary devices of the lathe such as for example the positioning or choice of the end stops for machining the table and the headstock, the control of a feed device or an evacuation device for the workpieces or machined respectively, etc.
These automatic functions and these auxiliary devices as well as their control from a cleat drum being well known, it is not necessary to describe them here in detail.
The sliding headstock lathe shown also comprises a non-traversing front carriage 28 movable linearly in a horizontal plane and in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the workpiece-holder spindle 6 carried by the headstock 4. The actuation of this front carriage 28 is carried out by cam for example.
In the example illustrated, the actuation of this front carriage is carried out by a mechanical actuation link. This front carriage 28 is slid on slides made in the frame 1 of the lathe and is subjected to an elastic action (not shown) tending to keep it in an advanced position against the action of its control. The drive connection of this carriage comprises a cam 34 fixed to the camshaft 12 and the profile of which cooperates with a roller carried by a lever 35.
This lever 35 is rigidly fixed to the end of a shaft 36 parallel to the camshaft 12 and which drives, by means of a pair of bevel gears 37, 38 and a pin 39, a toothed sector 40 meshed with a rack 41 carried by the front carriage 28.
The profile of the cam 34 is such that at the start of the cycle the carriage is advanced in the direction of the workpiece and then it is held in this working position for part of the cycle before being returned to the retracted position. . Indeed, this front carriage is not moved during the machining of a part.
This front carriage carries a hydraulic copying device comprising at the end of its movable member 43 a tool holder 44 in which is fixed a cutting tool 45. This copying device is fixed in such a way on the front carriage 28 that the linear movements of its movable member, and therefore of the tool 45 that it carries, take place in a direction forming an angle on the one hand with the direction of movement of the front carriage 28 and on the other hand with the direction of movement of the tailstock 4.
This illustrated hydraulic copying device is of the type comprising a feeler 46 whose movements, against the action of an elastic return action, control the position of the movable member 43 of the hydraulically actuated copying device.
This feeler 46 is held, by an elastic return action not shown, in contact with the profile of a removable template 47 carried by means of an adjustment device by the tailstock 4. This adjustment device comprises a member 48 for adjusting the position of the template 47 relative to the tailstock in a direction parallel to the axis of the spindle 6, as well as an adjusting member 49 for its position relative to the doll 4 in a perpendicular direction to the displacement of this one. This arrangement therefore makes it possible to control the position of the tool actuated by the copying device to the position of the tailstock.
The operation of the sliding headstock lathe described is as follows: The operator chooses the template 47 corresponding to the machining operation he wishes to perform and fixes it on the adjustment device. Using this adjustment device, he positions this template 47 in its exact desired position relative to the part carried by spindle 6.
The tailstock 4 and the front carriage 28 are both in their retracted position while the movable member 43 of the copying device is hand held by the fluid pressure in its advanced position.
Consequently, the successive operations take place either automatically controlled by a control device or manually controlled: 1. The front carriage 28 is advanced in the direction of the axis of the spindle 6 to a position for which the tool 45 carried by the copying device is located at a distance from the axis of this spindle 6 corresponding to its position at the start of machining.
2. The doll is actuated in the direction of the front carriage and the part carried by the spindle comes into contact with the tool 45 of the copying device. However, as the feeler 46 is in contact with the template 47 carried by the doll, the movable member 43 of the copying device is moved in movements depending on the movements of the probe which are determined by the advance of the doll by through the template 43. In this way the position of the tool 45 is a function of the advance of the headstock.
3. At the end of machining, that is to say at the end of the headstock advance stroke, the front carriage 28 is returned to its retracted or rest position and the probe 46 of the copying device escapes the control. template 47 and returns to its rest position, causing the movable member 11 of this copying device to return to the advanced rest position.
4. The recoil in the recoil or rest position of the headstock.
It is therefore extremely easy, using the sliding headstock lathe described, to machine a shaped part using a simple profile template. It is obvious that the inclination of the direction of movement of the movable member 43 of the copying device can be varied and could in certain particular cases be parallel to the movement of the front carriage.
However, when the movable member 43 of the copying device moves obliquely with respect to the axis of the part to be machined, it is possible to perform a dressing operation of a face perpendicular to the axis of the part to be machined. machining during the feed of the tailstock. It is therefore possible to perform during the advance of the headstock simultaneously the dressing of a face perpendicular to the axis of the part using the tool carried by the copying device and the machining of 'a bearing with the aid of a tool carried by the transverse table 7. This makes it possible to reduce the machining time of a part since it is possible to perform two operations simultaneously which represents an appreciable reduction in cost price of this part.
This sliding headstock lathe has the following main advantages over existing lathes of this type 1. Possibility of machining easily, that is to say without complicated cam calculations, a shaped part. 2. Possibility of simultaneous machining of a seat and dressing of a face or the turning of a shaped surface on a workpiece. 3. This lathe makes it possible to carry out two machining operations on the same part simultaneously in two different planes while having very simple control of the movements of the tools. It is in fact possible to eliminate the crossed carriages, currently used and which alone made it possible to carry out such an operation, the control of which is still very complex.
Instead of a hydraulic copying device, a mechanical copying device could be used. In addition, the front carriage could move in a plane which is not horizontal as long as its movement is perpendicular to that of the doll.
In addition, the template controlling the movements of the movable member of the copying device could be fixed differently on the tailstock provided that the linear movements of the tool carried by the copying device are controlled by the advance movements and possibly recoil of the tailstock.
