Process for preparing acetylacetamide The present invention relates to a process for preparing acetylacetamide by the action of ammonia on diketene. Until now, the preparation of acetylacetamide from ammonia and diketene has been carried out in a liquid reaction medium. Thus, ammonia can be made to act on diketene, either in aqueous media, or also in an organic solvent such as, for example, ether, etc. These methods have many drawbacks.
If the reaction is carried out in an aqueous medium, the separation of the acetylacetamide from the reaction medium with a good yield is particularly difficult, owing to the instability of this product in aqueous solution. If the preparation takes place in the presence of organic solvents, the need to work at low temperature, the purification of the crude product and finally the regeneration of large quantities of solvent make the process expensive.
Now, a new process for preparing acetylacetamide has been found which does not have the drawbacks which hamper the processes described above, this new process being characterized in that the ammonia and diketene are reacted in the gas phase. at a temperature between 15 and 70 @ C.
The process is preferably carried out at temperatures below the melting point of acetylacetamide (54 C), for example between 20 and 30o C. Temperatures above 700 C are excluded because of the instability of acetylacetamide. at these temperatures. In order to prevent premature crystallization during the reaction, temperatures below 150 ° C. are also excluded.
The reaction should be carried out in the presence of a slight excess of ammonia of for example 5 to 10% of the diketene introduced into the reactor. It is preferred to carry out the process in the presence of a gas, such as, for example, nitrogen, which acts as a diluent and entraining gas so as to reduce overheating of the reaction mixture, due to the heat of reaction.
Diketene, the boiling point (127 C) of which is above the reaction temperature, must be vaporized. To do this, it is possible, for example, to enrich a stream of entraining gas, such as nitrogen, with diketene vapor, or to introduce the diketene into the mixture of ammonia and nitrogen by means of a vaporization nozzle. . According to another procedure, the ammonia is introduced into a stream of entraining gas loaded with diketene.
The acetylacetamide thus obtained is entrained out of the reaction zone by the stream of inert entraining gas. It condenses almost immediately after its formation according to the cooling conditions, either for example in supercooled liquid form, or even in the form of crystals. If the acetylacetamide is collected as liquid, crystallization is carried out, for example by priming, or even by any other suitable method.
Example 1 In a glass capillary 9 cm long, maintained at 30o C, 1.85 g per hour of ammonia is mixed with a stream of 8.4 g per hour of diketene entrained by a nitrogen flow of 5001 / hour. The stream of diketene supplemented with nitrogen is obtained by bubbling a stream of nitrogen through a washing flask containing diketene maintained at a temperature of 400 C.
The reaction between the ammonia and the diketene takes place instantly and the amide formed flows into a vessel in which the supercooled product crystallizes by itself or by priming. There was collected 9.6 g per hour of acetylacetamide having a melting point of 52 to 53.20 C,
ie a yield of 96% relative to the diketene used.
Example 2 The reaction is carried out in an apparatus shown in FIG. 1. This apparatus comprises a reaction tube (1) 235 mm in length, having a constriction (2) at the point where the vaporization nozzle (3) ends, through which diketene is supplied to the reaction, and s 'then widening again like a Venturi tube. (4) and (5) represent the arrivals of ammonia gas and of the entraining gas (nitrogen). The apparatus is completed by a diketene reservoir (6). Is introduced through the tube on the one hand 9.3 g ammonia per hour mixed with nitrogen in a ratio of 1 to 20, and on the other hand by means of the nozzle (3) 42.5 g per hour of diketene in the ammonia / nitrogen stream.
The tube is maintained throughout its length at a temperature of 350 ° C. At the base of the tube, 50 g per hour of supercooled acetylacetamide are collected, ie with a yield of 100% from diketene. The melting point of the crystallized product is 53o C.
