<tb>

Plastic bag and method of making this bag
The invention relates to a bag, the walls of which are formed by a plastic film and which is provided near one of its ends between the opposite internal faces of its walls, with male and female elements. , capable of being engaged one in the other, this bag being characterized in that the shapes of said elements are such that their resistance against their disengagement due to an internal pressure of the bag is a multiple of the force necessary to obtain their engagement or disengagement by an external action on the edges of the walls of the bag.
The invention also comprises a method of manufacturing the bag, characterized in that the walls of the bag and its closure elements, consisting of a rib and a groove, are simultaneously manufactured by extrusion.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, various embodiments of the bag which the invention comprises:
Fig. 1 of this drawing shows, in section and on a greatly enlarged scale, part of a bag with a rib and groove closure.
Figs. 2, 3 and 4 show three other embodiments of bags having closures in the form of ribs and grooves.
Fig. 5 shows, in perspective, a tubular film provided with a rib and a closing groove, used in the manufacture of bags.
Fig. 6 shows the tubular film of FIG. 5 flattened, the rib and the groove of the closure being engaged with each other.
Fig. 7 shows in perspective, how individual bags are made from the flattened tubular film of FIG. 6.
Fig. 8 shows, in perspective, a flat film provided with a rib and a closing groove, these rib and groove being arranged on either side and near a center line, this film being used for the manufacture of bags.
Fig. 9 shows the flat film of FIG. 7, folded on itself along its center line, the rib and the closing groove being engaged one in the other.
Fig. 10 shows a flat film provided with a rib and a closing groove disposed near the edges of the film, which also serves in the manufacture of bags.
Fig. 11, finally, shows the flat film of FIG. 10 folded on itself along its center line, the rib and the groove of the closure being engaged one in the other.
Many closures with male and female elements are known for bags the walls of which are formed by a plastic film, but these closures do not take into account the forces which must be provided to open and close the bag from the outside and the resistance they must oppose to an accidental release of the contents of the bag.
The plastic bag shown in FIG. 1 has walls 1 and 2 formed by a plastic film; it is provided near its edge, between the opposite internal faces of its walls 1 and 2, male and female closing elements, elements consisting of a rib and a groove capable of being engaged one in the other by a simple pressure between the fingers and which oppose to the internal pressure of the contents against the walls 1 and 2 a sufficient resistance, taking into account the resistance to tearing of the walls 1 and 2, to safely retain the contents in the bag and which, however,
can be disengaged from one another by a simple pull by the fingers on extensions 1a and 2a of the walls 1 and 2 beyond the closure elements.
The male and female elements, in this case the rib and the groove of the closure, have shapes such as their resistance against their disengagement, due to a pressure inside the bag, that is to say several, preferably about five times greater than the force required. to obtain their engagement or disengagement by an action from the outside on the extensions 1a and 2a of the walls of the bag.
It is ensured that the resistance of the male and female elements of the closure, against their disengagement under the effect of the pressure that the contents of the bag can exert from the inside against the walls 1 and 2, for example in the event of impact , compression or fall of the bag, is at least equal to, or exceeds, the resistance of walls 1 and 2 to tearing.
The rib and the groove are given corresponding shapes such that each has, on either side of its axial plane XY, perpendicular to the wall 1 or 2 of the bag (fig. 2), to which it belongs, profiles, hooking different by their shapes, the profile which, as a result of this difference, is suitable for ensuring the most effective hooking being placed, with respect to the XY plane, on the inside of the bag - Following a shape of preferred embodiment the rib has a head 4 which is secured, by means of a foot 3, to the wall 1 of the bag, and whose asymmetrical shape projects out on either side of the foot 3, in front of the wall 1, offers the complementary edges 5 and 6 of the groove 7 hooking surfaces including that (8)
which extends from the foot 3 towards the inside of the bag is inclined towards the wall 1 of the bag while that (9) which extends from the foot 3 towards the outside is substantially parallel to said wall.
Advantageously, the rib 3 is given a profile such that in section it has the shape of an asymmetric arrowhead (FIG. 2).
At the groove 7, it is possible to give, between the overhanging edges 5 and 6, a profile in the form of an arc of a circle or an ellipse or of a part of a polygon.
Advantageously, the groove 7 is provided in a coil 10 which forms a sort of gutter and which, by its bottom 10a, is integral, along its median plane XY, with the wall 2 of the bag, projecting from this wall towards rib 3-4 of the other wall 1.
According to a variant, there is provided on each side of the rib 3-4 an edge 11 (FIG. 3) capable of pressing the coil 10 against the rib 3-4.
According to yet another variant shown in FIG. 4, the groove 7a is formed by the substantially rectangular space, located between two parallel rails
10b and 10c, integral with the wall 2 of the bag.
Advantageously, the coil 10 (or the rails 10b and 10c) comprising the groove 7 (or 7a) is established in the same material as the wall 2 of the bag and in one piece with this wall, and the same is done for the rib 3-4 (and possibly the ridges 11) and the wall 1 of the bag.
In this case, advantageously, the walls 1 and 2 of the bag and the rib 3-4 as well as the groove 5, 6, 7, 10 are established in a single piece by extrusion.
We can then proceed in several ways.
According to a first way, one produces, by extrusion, a tube 12 (FIG. 5) and, on the inner wall of this tube, the rib 3-4 and the coil 10 comprising the groove 7, the rib and the groove s' extending next to each other parallel to the extrusion axis. The tube 12 is flattened by engaging the rib in the groove (fig. 6). Finally, the tube 12 is cut into sections 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d, etc ... (fig 7) which are closed at their ends 13 by welding and which are then opened above the closure at 14 .
According to another way, a flat strip 15 is produced by extrusion (FIG. 8) comprising the rib 3-4 and the coil 10, these ribs and coil being arranged on either side of the midline MI-
Mr. of the band and close to this line. Then, the strip is folded on itself along the line M1-ML, engaging the rib 3-4 in the groove 7 (fig. 9) to, finally, cut sections which differ from those of fig. 7 in that they are open at 16, on the side opposite to that provided with the closure elements. The opening 16 can be used for filling the bag and then be closed by welding.
According to another variant, it is also possible to provide the rib 3-4 and the strand 10 with groove 7 in parallel and at a small distance from the edges, of a flat strip 15a, obtained by extrusion (FIG. 10). The strip 15a is then folded on itself, along its center line, and the rib engaged in the groove (fig.
11). It is then possible to cut sections thereof which differ from those of FIG. 7 by the fact that they are already open in 14.
It may be advantageous, by proceeding in the manner illustrated in FIGS. 5 to 7 or by fig. 8 and 9, not to open the bag at 14 and to use the wall of the bag, at this point, as an additional closure or guarantee strip that must be cut or torn off in order to have access to the closure elements themselves and to the contents of the bag. In this case, it is possible to arrange, preferably during the extrusion operation, in the part of the strip 15 (fig. 8) which extends between the closure elements on the side opposite to the bag itself, two grooves. 17 of weakening, located equidistant from the center line M1-M *, of the band.
These two grooves 17 are superimposed when the strip 15 is folded, as shown in FIG. 9, by constituting a preferential tear line to facilitate the pulling of a strip between the rib 3-4 and the groove 7 of the closure, which makes the latter accessible from the outside, as shown at 14 on fig. 11.
It will be understood that, when one wishes to open the bag by exerting a traction in the opposite direction on the edges 1a and 2a of the bag in the XY direction (fig. 1), the edges 6 and 9, through which the groove 7 and the rib 3-4 coact on the side which, with respect to the XY plane, is opposite to the pocket formed by the bag, oppose only weak resistance. Now, as soon as the edge 9 of the rib has left the groove 7, it is possible, by causing the rib to pivot in the groove, to easily unhook the edge 8 of the rib from the edge 5 of the groove.
On the other hand, when the contents tend to separate the walls 1 and 2 from the interior of the bag, the groove and the rib remain firmly anchored in one another by their edges 5 and 8 which penetrate deeply into one another. other with a strong hooking obliquity.
An even stronger attachment is obtained on the inside of the bag, by making the head 4 overhang the foot 3 of the rib more towards the inside of the bag than towards the outside, that is to say that the extra thickness 4 deviates from the XY plane towards the interior of the bag by a distance A greater than that of B, from which the same allowance deviates from the XY plane towards the exterior of the bag.
In accordance with the shape of the head of the rib, the edge 5 which overhangs the groove 7 is given a length greater than that of the edge 6.
When you want to close the bag, it suffices to press with your fingers from the outside against the walls 1 and 2, along the XY plane, so that the rib 3-4 enters the groove 7, elastically separating the walls of the sausage 10.
When we want to establish a bag whose walls 1 and 2 are in one piece with the ribs 3-4 and groove 7, 10 of the closure device, it is necessary, in order to obtain optimum resistance qualities, to choose the dimensions of said rib and groove according to the thickness of the walls 1 and 2 of the bag.
Indeed, the closure must have the desired qualities of resistance to opening while having dimensions and weight as low as possible.
Assuming that one wants to make the polyethylene bag, it is known that a standard quality foil for packaging has, depending on its thickness, the following strength qualities:

This table shows that the resistance of the sheet, which must constitute the walls 1 and 2 of the bag, is proportional to its thickness.
It has been found experimentally that the closure must be able to open under a force of 200 g to 800 g (maximum). It appears that it is then possible to use a polyethylene sheet only 0.03 mm thick, the strength of which is 1000 g, as shown in the table above.
Experiments have shown that a closure which opposes a resistance of about 2000 g to an accidental opening caused by the contents of the bag, and which can be opened or closed at will using an external force of about 400 g, suitable for a bag made of a polyethylene sheet 0.05 mm thick, the tensile strength of which is 1600 g. In this case, a closure is obtained whose weight and section are minimum while giving complete satisfaction to the user of the bag. In fact, the rib 3-4 and the strand 10 with groove 7 of the closure then weigh approximately 1.2 g per meter of length and the distance separating the outer faces of the walls 1 and 2 of the bag at the location of the closure. is approximately 1, 14 mm or 17/15 mm.
The rib of this closure has the following characteristics. With respect to the median plane
XY perpendicular to wall 1, edge 8 forms an angle a from 550 to 65.0 edge 9 an angle p of 801, at 90 ", while the two faces which outwardly delimit the head of the rib are each with l 'axis XY an angle of 350 to 45 ,,. The thickness of the foot 3 of the rib is about 5/15 mm and that of its head 4, at the location of the edges 8 and 9, about 10 / 15 mm The top of the head 4 of the rib is at a distance of about 13/15 mm from the wall 1 and about 6/15 mm from the edge 8.
The point of intersection of edges 8 and 9 with the center line
X-Y is moved away from the end of edge 8 by about 3/15 mm.
The groove of the closure has the characteristics. following. The thickness of the sausage, between the
3, 3 inner wall 7 and the outside, is about-mm.
The spacing between edges 5 and 6 is approximately 7/15 mm, their distance from the bottom of the groove approximately 8/15 mm.
The dimensions and angles which were indicated above for the case of a sheet 0.05 mm thick (example n 3) determine proportions and shapes which are valid in a more general way, c 'that is to say also for bags whose walls have another thickness.
The resistance to opening of the closure varies proportionally with its weight per meter of length. We can thus draw up the following table:

In this table, the term interior refers to the interior parts, and the outer tarnish refers to the exterior parts of the bag. The values indicated can be considered as being those which represent
The maximum effort required to induce the opening
ture of the bag, either from the inside or from the outside,
i.e. to separate one from the other either the edges
8 and 5, or edges 9 and 6 (fig. 2), by a trac
tion acting on the walls 1 and 2 of the bag (fig. 1) by
opposite direction, either below or above the plane
X-Y (see the situation of this plane in fig. 1).
Advantageously, for the thicknesses,
number of sheets indicated in the first table and desi
generated by different example numbers, the elements
closing times indicated in the second table and
born by the same example numbers. So we
can use a closure according to Example No. 1,
having a weight of 0.6 g / m, with a poly sheet
ethylene according to Example No. 1, having a thickness
0.03 mm. In the combinations thus proposed,
the closure has sufficient hold while remaining
of a minimum weight for a determined thickness
polyethylene sheet and you can be sure that
the proportion between the external resistance and the
inner resistance is about 1: 5.
The bag described could, of course, be made
with a closing device whose elements
male and female have different shapes of
those of the recommended rib and groove and represented
tees in the drawings, provided that the iron device
meture opposes to opening a resistance several
times larger from the inside than from the outside, the
resistance of the bag walls to be greater
to the latter but preferably being lower
to the first.
CLAIMS
I. Bag whose walls are formed by a plastic film and which is provided near one of its ends between the opposite internal faces of its walls, male and female closing elements, capable of being engaged one inside the other, characterized in that the shapes of said elements are such that their resistance against their disengagement due to internal pressure of the bag is a multiple of the force necessary to obtain their engagement or disengagement by an action from the bag. outside on the edges of the walls of the bag.
