Antifreeze Antifreeze based on monohydric and polyhydric alcohols has been known for a long time. The group of anti-freeze agents based on monohydric alcohols, especially methanol and ethanol - the so-called volatile type - has now largely been pushed back by the second group, i.e. the type of anti-freeze agents designated as non-volatile or permanent. These are primarily based on glycol, in particular ethylene glycol.
Other glycols, e.g. B. diethylene glycol, 1,2-propylene, glycol and 1,3-butylene glycol as well as the trivalent alcohol glycerine are hardly used as the basis for antifreeze, since the same proportions in aqueous solutions have lower or significantly lower degrees of antifreeze than can be achieved with ethylene glycol. In addition, z.
B. also dilute 1,2-propylene and 1,3-butylene glycol with prolonged exposure to car paintwork, so that for this reason too, the glycols mentioned are not suitable as the sole basis for car radiator antifreeze.
In many countries today only non-volatile antifreeze, especially as a car radiator antifreeze, is used. This fact has contributed significantly to the fact that in recent times it has been possible to speak of ethylene: glycol as a shortage.
Ways were therefore sought to produce antifreeze agents based on glycols, but using one or more other products that, on the one hand, lack neither the antifreeze nor the other characteristic properties of ethylene glycol-water mixtures and, on the other hand, as an additive to others polyhydric alcohols make them appear interesting as a basis for antifreeze1.
It is known to use aqueous solutions of salts, in particular alkali acetates, to lower the freezing point. For example, from the East German Patent Nos. 3038 and 1424, frost-resistant liquid mixtures are known which are characterized in that, instead of alcohol, other water-soluble organic substances such as acetic and formic acid salts of potassium and sodium are used in them.
Also after J. D'Ans and E. Lax Taschenbuch für Chemiker und Physiker 1949, page 1526, it is known that by means of aqueous solutions of salts, e.g. B. sodium acetate, ammonium chloride, sodium nitrate and the like substantial temperature reductions can be achieved. Finally, in the American patent specification 2233185 u. a.
aqueous solutions of potassium acetate for lowering the freezing point described.
In practice, salt solutions, especially aqueous alkali acetate solutions, have never become known as anti-freeze for car radiators, apparently because the use of aqueous salt solutions, which provide perfect corrosion protection against the various metals, light metals and alloys used in the cooling systems, is extraordinary Encounter difficulties.
It has now been found that mixtures of aqueous salt solutions with polyhydric alcohols such as glycols or glycerine are well suited for car radiator antifreeze and do not attack rubber, metals, light metals or alloys if the known effective corrosion protection agents are present at the same time.
Against layers of paint, they behave similarly or better than antifreeze agents, which are only made from ethylene glycol.
The viscosities of such combinations are by no means higher than those of equally effective glycol-water mixtures at lower temperatures. The alkali metal, ammonium and / or alkaline earth metal salts of lower carboxylic and / or oxycarboxylic acids and / or inorganic acids can be used as water-soluble salts.
As carboxylic or oxycarboxylic acid salts, for example, those of acetic or lactic acid, as mineral acid salts, for example, those of hydrochloric, hydrochloric, nitric, rhodanic, phosphoric, sulfuric, thiosulphuric or nitrous acid Application.
The salts mentioned above can be used mixed, both with regard to the anion and the cation, with the exception of mutual precipitation.
Glycerine or glycols with preferably 2 to 6 carbon atoms, such as, for example, ethylene glycol, propylene glycols, butylene glycols, hexylene glycols, di- or triethylene glycol or mixtures thereof, can serve as polyvalent alcoholic components.
Combinations of a glycol or glycol mixtures with alkali acetates are particularly advantageous. They equip an effective rust protection together with the known anti-corrosion agents.
Known corrosion protection agents are alkali or alkaline earth salts, for example sodium or potassium tetraborate, and also benzoates, carbonates, phosphates, mercaptobenzothiazole or sodium mercaptobenzothiazole, sodium nitrite in customary amounts.
The antifreeze protection of alkali acetate, e.g. B. Potassium acetate ethylene glycol-water mixtures extends Wei ter than with equal percentage ethylene glycol-water mixtures without the salt additives mentioned.
In all of the following examples, the antifreeze contents are given in% by volume. The 50% strength aqueous potassium acetate solutions used are themselves produced by weight, but the addition to the anti-freeze agent is also given in vol: o / o for the sake of consistency and better comparability.
